Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly Nautical Magazine and Quarterly Commercial Review, Vol. 1: October, 1854 March, 1855 It becomes an interesting question to every American mind whether the mechanical and commercial genius of the United States, which has nothing to fear when the terms are equal, but which now are, as they have long been, fearfully against us - as is but too clearly manifest in the workings of our warping ton nage laws - shall, for the future, be able to contend successfully, as heretofore, with a wealthy commercial power, now thoroughly aroused to the vital importance of preserving a position on the sea, which is essential to the independence of an insular nation ality, of the first class in the scale of nations, and which can only be done by possessing a large maritime population, which can be insured only by maintaining an immense mercantile navy; which, again, as has been proved by the nautical contest with this country, must ever be completely dependent on the qualities qf the ships that compose it. But a more deeply interesting question will agitate the tran quillity of every American bosom, whether we are willing to permit any obstacle, of whatever name, to interpose even doubt ful barriers to any enterprise whatever, undertaken by American navigators upon the face of the deep. To both of these ques tions the ship-builders of the United States are expected to fur nish answers in the work of their hands and heads. It is in order to enable them to insure a favorable solution to these problems, which are fairly before us for future demonstration, by furnishing the basis for advancing to a more elevated position for commanding the future excellences of our commercial eets, with the desire that our prosperous country shall continue to stand unrivalled in shipping in the waters of the globe, that this Press is dedicated to the maritime interests of the United States. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly Nautical Magazine, and Quarterly Review, Vol. 2: April to September, 1855 Among the many improvements of the past twelve years that have rendered nautical operations most valuable services in the improved adjustment of spars and canvas to ships, the well known rig of Robert B. Forbes, of Boston, stands foremost on the list, and deserves our especial commendation not, however, because of its general introduction on board of all large ships, for it has not yet received the attention from ship-owners and mas ters to which it is eminently entitled, but because its advantages affecting economy, safety, and convenience, excel all others. It very rarely happens that a few brief years are sufficient to fur nish time for a popular appreciation of any important innova tion upon habits, whether mechanical, commercial, or nautical. The modest oscillations of science are seldom heeded, till the wave of progress falls as breakers at our feet, and we are com pelled to move before the advancing flood. The noble and the generous of earth's inventive children impatiently wait the rising tide of destiny, that eventually carries all reforms forward upon the voyage of progress. In obedience to the impressions of duty, we shall, therefore, proceed to lay before our readers the advan tages of the Forbes's Rig, promising first, that the present arti cle will be continued in the next number, in which will also ap pear a beautiful lithograph of the new packet-ship Aurora, commanded by Captain Bunting, of N ew-york. This splendid ship, a Liverpool packet, was built by Wm. H. Webb, in 1854, and is owned by Cornelius Grinnell, Esq., of N ew-york. Book Historic Shipwrecks of the Southern Gulf Islands of British Columbia

Download or read book Historic Shipwrecks of the Southern Gulf Islands of British Columbia written by Jacques Marc and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Columbia’s rugged Southern Gulf Islands enticed many pioneers, explorers, colonists, miners, and adventurers in the mid 19th century. Fog, wind, strong currents and the lack of aids to navigation made navigating these striking and treacherous islands a hazardous business. Many vessels and seafarers did not survive their intended voyages, and their forgotten remains now litter the sea floor, visited only by intrepid divers searching for clues to the past. As one reads this book, stories will unfold which remind us that not so long ago, travelling by ship along the British Columbia coast would have challenged even the most seasoned mariner, and that danger lurked below the water’s surface. Historic Shipwrecks of the Southern Gulf Islands of British Columbia is a compilation of 14 stories about Shipwrecks throughout those islands. This book not only follows the history of each vessel and their loss, but also describes for the lay person what divers will see when they dive on the sites today. This book is a must have for those with an interest in British Columbia’s maritime history. It is one of a series of shipwreck publications produced by the Underwater Archaeological Society of British Columbia to make the province’s submerged cultural history accessible to everyone.
