Its rapidity of action is remark able, and to this rapidity is added certainty. With regard to the local effects of the injection, Dr. Raymond says that in over 300 injections no accident has occurred; very slight local swelling has sometimes been observed, but this has always rapidly disappeared without inflammation. Download or read book The Monthly Abstract of Medical Science 1876 Vol 3 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 1172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly Abstract of Medical Science, 1876, Vol. 3: A Digest of the Progress of Medicine and the Collateral Sciences As a result of the disturbance in circulation. Combined with the emigration of white blood-corpuscles, it was found that the borders of the cells forming the vessels are not so distinct as in a normal state. Between them are a greater number of dark spots (stigmata) than in a normal state, generally not so large that red blood-corpuscles could pass them. Dr. Arnold observed that granules of Cinnabar, as well as colloid substances, may leave the vessels through the stigmata. The cause of the easier penetrability of the vessels may be found in an alteration of the condition of the cement connecting their cells. A great number of the emigrated white corpuscles are carried off by the lymph-vessels. The author thinks that with the disturbance in circulation during emigration there are connected currents directed towards the walls of the vessels, and that they are of different strength - London Med. Record, Oct. 15, 1875. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly Abstract of Medical Science, Vol. 5: A Digest of the Progress of Medicine and the Collateral Sciences An objection is now and again raised to the salicylate treatment 011 the ground that relapses are especially liable to occur, but so far as we are able to form an Opinion, this objection applies equally, or very nearly equally, to other methods of treatment, and a reference to thirty-two cases lately under observation shows that a relapse took place in ten cases out of eighteen in which the salicylates were used; that recurrence of the symptoms sat in in four out of eight cases under alka lies, and in two out of six cases in which the treatment consisted of a combination of the alkaline and salicylate treatments. One case under alkalies suffered as many as four relapses, while in no case under the other treatments did the pain recur more than twice. Looking to the material at our disposal for a judgment, we incline to the belief that many of the relapses under the salicylate treatment are due to the fact that the medicine has been discontinued too early in the course of the disease.
