If a conscientious study of facts could yet leave in our minds some doubts as to the respective merits of the two causes which were at war in the eleventh century, all that is needed to dissipate them is a comparison of the characters of the two individuals in whom were personified the Empire and the Church. It would be unjust, however, to deny to Henry IV. many of those qualities which make a great king; he possessed together with extraordinary activity, perseverance, and intrepidity, worthy of the best of causes, a rare prudence and sagacity. Book Western Monasticism Ante Litteram

Download or read book Western Monasticism Ante Litteram written by Hendrik W. Dey and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space has always played a crucial part in defining the place that monks and nuns occupy in the world. Even during the first centuries of the monastic phenomenon, when the possible varieties of monastic practice were nearly infinite, there was a common thread in the need to differentiate the monk from the rest: whatever else they were supposed to be, monks were beings apart, unique, in some sense separate from the mainstream. The physical contours of monastic topographies, natural and constructed, are thus fundamental to an understanding of how early monks went about defining the parameters of their everyday lives, their modes of religious observance, and their interactions with the larger world around them. The group of eminent historians and archaeologists present at the American Academy in Rome in March, 2007 for the conference 'Western monasticism ante litteram. The spaces of early monastic observance, ' whose contributions comprise the bulk of this volume, have sought to reconsider the theory, the practice and above all the spaces of early monasticism in the West, in the hope of creating a more complete picture of that seminal period, from the fourth century until the ninth, when notions of what it meant to be a monk were as numerous as they were varied and (often) conflicting

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monks of the West, Vol. 5 of 6: From St. Benedict to St. Bernard It was not meet, however, that the work so bravely sacrificed should be altogether thrown away. The critics to whom M. De Montalembert had submitted his work, and the severity of his own judgment of it, concerned only the first portion - the First Book of the printed volume. The rise and early days of the Monastic Orders had seemed to their historian to be described too brie y: the portico had been judged too narrow for the proportions of the edifice. Thus, all the substance of the four hundred pages composing the First Book appears in the volumes of the Monks of the West now given to the public. Book The Cambridge History of Medieval Monasticism in the Latin West

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Medieval Monasticism in the Latin West written by Alison I. Beach and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monasticism, in all of its variations, was a feature of almost every landscape in the medieval West. So ubiquitous were religious women and men throughout the Middle Ages that all medievalists encounter monasticism in their intellectual worlds. While there is enormous interest in medieval monasticism among Anglophone scholars, language is often a barrier to accessing some of the most important and groundbreaking research emerging from Europe. The Cambridge History of Medieval Monasticism in the Latin West offers a comprehensive treatment of medieval monasticism, from Late Antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages. The essays, specially commissioned for this volume and written by an international team of scholars, with contributors from Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States, cover a range of topics and themes and represent the most up-to-date discoveries on this topic.
