But how would our reality change if we could free ourselves from the limitations of our perception? Little Dominique comes a little closer to the answer to this question when he suddenly stumbles out of his sheltered everyday life into a completely unknown world in which nothing is as it seems. This new world is made up of different colors, gravity is upside down and the inhabitants barely reach the 10-year-old's chest. Can Dominique's new companion bring light into the darkness? And is it possible that entire universes exist right under our noses without us being able to perceive them? Or did Dominique just dream it all?

Book Saint Dominic Preacher of the Rosary and Founder of the Dominican Order

Download or read book Saint Dominic Preacher of the Rosary and Founder of the Dominican Order written by Sr. Mary Jean Dorcy O.P. and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2015-10-08 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ON a hot August night in 1221 a saint whom the Church has designated as a “holy athlete of Christ” finished his course and gave up his soul to the God whom he had served, consistently and at great speed, for fifty-one years. Around him were grouped his sons, men of half a dozen nations, who ten years before had hardly heard of Dominic Guzman and now were quite willing to die for him. Like any father of any family, he spoke to them of their inheritance; not wealth, for he had not even a room in which to die nor a habit in which to be buried. But he left an immortal legacy, a blazing enthusiasm for God which the Christian world had not seen since the day of Pentecost. His testament was as simple and as potent as the Sermon on the Mount, and dealt with the same basic verities: “Have charity one for another; Guard humility; Make your treasure out of voluntary poverty.” For a little over seven hundred years, the sons and daughters of this man of God have tried to put into words something of the world-shaking force that was Dominic. No one has ever quite succeeded. Getting St. Dominic into print is like printing Fra Angelico in black and white. In view of this, it does not seem sanguine to judge that the time is ripe for a brief Life of St. Dominic in English. May it do its part in attracting to the Order fresh recruit. from the strata of humanity that Dominic most loved— the young and the courageous who will not shrink from the challenge implicit in St. Dominic’s words to Stephen of Spain as he clothed him with the habit of the Friars Preachers: “I give you arms, with which throughout your life you may fight against the devil.”

Book The Medieval Cult of Saint Dominic of Silos

Download or read book The Medieval Cult of Saint Dominic of Silos written by Anthony Lappin and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucas, the garrulous bishop of Tuy, included the thaumaturgy of Saint Dominic of Silos as one of the glories of Spain in his mid-thirteenth-century account of the Peninsula's history. This study examines the rise to prominence of one of the most important of saints' cults in Medieval Spain and its development throughout the Middle Ages. It interrogates neglected texts such as the late eleventh-century Vita Dominici Exiliensis and the late thirteenth-century Miraculos romancados (as well as artistic representations and works written outside Silos), and places the more widely known Vida de Santo Domingo by Gonzalo de Berceo (c. 1260) in a new light by firmly fixing its presentation of the saint within the development of the cult. Dominic's veneration became centred upon his role in freeing captives, and a study of this phenomenon provides a focus on the frontier and its settlers through their devotion to the saint, as well as illuminating their view of their Muslim adversaries. This is not the only centre of interest in the book, and a variety of approaches are employed to draw as round a picture as possible of the functioning of this saint's cult, from analysis of the manuscript traditions of the various works discussed to a consideration of the anthropology of Silos as a pilgrimage centre. All quotations are given in both Latin or Romance with an English translation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A phenomenon seldom recognized in the media of Western Europe and North America is the extraordinary growth of the Catholic Church of South America and sub-Saharan Africa during the last five decades, and nowhere more than in Nigeria. A key figure in that country and in that growth, up to his death in 1995, was Cardinal Ekandem, the first Anglophone West-African bishop - the first of many - and an outstanding churchman of the 20th Century. Fr. Michael Edem’s scholarly biography of the Cardinal is a fascinating account of a journey from life in a traditional African village to the consistory of cardinals of the Catholic Church in Rome. It will be of enormous interest to a wider public for the author’s personal knowledge of the cardinal and of the Efik/Ibibio culture in which they both grew up.

Book excerpt: In this searing and riveting New York Times bestseller, Olympic gold medalist Dominique Moceanu reveals the dark underbelly of Olympic gymnastics, the true price of success…and the shocking secret about her past and her family that she only learned years later. At fourteen years old, Dominique Moceanu was the youngest member of the 1996 US Women’s Olympic Gymnastics team, the first and only American women’s team to take gold at the Olympics. Her pixyish appearance and ferocious competitive drive quickly earned her the status of media darling. But behind the fame, the flawless floor routines, and the million-dollar smile, her life was a series of challenges and hardships. Off Balance vividly delineates each of the dominating characters who contributed to Moceanu’s rise to the top, from her stubborn father and long-suffering mother to her mercurial coach, Bela Karolyi. Here, Moceanu finally shares the haunting stories of competition, her years of hiding injuries and pain out of fear of retribution from her coaches, and how she hit rock bottom after a public battle with her parents. But medals, murder plots, drugs, and daring escapes aside (all of which figure into Moceanu’s incredible journey), the most unique aspect of her life is the family secret that Moceanu discovers, opening a new and unexpected chapter in her adult life. A mysterious letter from a stranger reveals that she has a second sister—born with a physical disability and given away at birth—who has nonetheless followed in Moceanu’s footsteps in an astonishing way. A multilayered memoir that transcends the world of sports, Off Balance will touch anyone who has ever dared to dream of a better life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dominic Flandry is the central character in the second half of Poul Anderson's "Technic History" series. He first appeared in 1951. The space opera series is set in the thirty-first century, during the waning days of the Terran Empire. Flandry is a dashing field agent of the Imperial Intelligence Corps who travels the stars to fight off imminent threats to the empire from both external enemies and internal treachery. His long-time archenemy is Aycharaych, from the planet Chereion, a cultured but ruthless telepathic spymaster who weaves plots for the expansionistic rival empire of the alien Merseians. Similar to the James Bond stories (which started two years later), every new adventure brings Flandry another beautiful damsel to woo and rescue. The illegitimate son of a minor nobleman, Flandry rises to considerable power within the decadent Empire by his own wits, and enjoys all the pleasures his position in society gives him. Still, he is painfully conscious of the impending fall of the Terran Empire and the subsequent "Long Night" of a galactic Dark Age. His career is dedicated to holding it off for as long as possible.
