Book Rainfall and Runoff in the Miami Valley Vol 8

Download or read book Rainfall and Runoff in the Miami Valley Vol 8 written by Ivan E. Houk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rainfall and Runoff in the Miami Valley, Vol. 8: Technical Reports The purpose of this report is to present to the engineering profession the results of rainfall and runoff investigations car ried on in connection with the Miami flood control project. When an engineering examination of the Miami Valley was begun, immediately after the great flood of March, 1913, in order to determine the best plan for preventing damage by fu ture floods, an investigation of rainfall and runoff conditions was naturally one of the first lines of attack. It was recognized at the start that a knowledge of rainfall and runoff would be essential in determining the size of the flood to be provided for, in the design of the flood protection works, and in the assessment of the benefits and damages which would result from the con struction of the works, as well as in the many other problems which probably would be encountered as the development of the plans proceeded. However, as the work progressed and as the magnitude of the problem became apparent, the importance of collecting such data became even more pronounced than had been originally anticipated. Consequently the collection of rainfall and runoff records and the studies of rainfall and runoff rela tions were more or less gradually expanded during the first few years of the work. This book was released on 2018-08-11 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydraulics of the Miami Flood Control Project As a result of rainfall almost unprecedented for this region all portions of southern Indiana and Ohio, together with adjacent areas in surrounding states, suffered from phenomenal floods on March 25, 1913. In the Miami Valley this flood submerged much of the resi dence portion and the greater part of the business and manufacturing area of the cities of Piqua, Troy, Dayton, Franklin, Miamisburg, and Hamilton. The considerable loss of life and the immense damage to property immediately raised the question whether it would be feasible to take steps to prevent any possible'recurrence of such a disaster, and the difierent interested communities gradually drew together to seek relief. Book The Great Dayton Flood of 1913

Download or read book The Great Dayton Flood of 1913 written by Trudy E. Bell and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning on Easter Sunday, March 23, 1913, torrential rains across the Midwest dropped a record three months of rainfall in four days. Floodwaters funneled down Ohio's Miami Valley into the heart of the vibrant industrial city of Dayton. Levees burst, houses were swept away, and downtown was gutted by fires blazing from broken gas mains. At the end of Easter week, nearly 100 Daytonians had perished, and tens of thousands more were left homeless and destitute--a tragedy that made banner headlines in newspapers nationwide. Out of Dayton's ashes and mud rose fierce public resolve never again to suffer such destruction. The Great Dayton Flood of 1913 reproduces some 200 astounding photographs from the collections of the Dayton Metro Library and the Miami Conservancy District and the archives of the National Cash Register Company at Dayton History. They portray the terrifying flood, monumental destruction, heroic rescues, and compassionate leadership that occurred during the disaster and its immediate aftermath, as well as the pioneering flood-control engineering that has kept Dayton safe ever since.

Book American Military History Volume 1

Download or read book American Military History Volume 1 written by Army Center of Military History and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.

Book Hoosiers and the American Story

Download or read book Hoosiers and the American Story written by Madison, James H. and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.
