But he, regardless of his dying body, said with a weak voice, "Lord, Thou givest strength to those who can speak, and to those who cannot: speak, Lord, to all our hearts, and let them know that Thou loosest tongues." He then sung--"To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Who sweetly all agree." Here his voice failed. After gasping for breath, he said, "Now we have done all--let us all go." He was then laid on the bed, from which he arose no more. After resting a little, he called to those who were with him to pray and praise; and taking each by the hand, and affectionately saluting them, he said, "Farewell, farewell!" Attempting afterwards to say something which they could not understand, he paused a little, and then, with all the remaining strength he had, said, "the Best Of All Is, God Is With us." And again, lifting his hand, he repeated the same words with holy triumph, "the Best Of All Is, God Is With Us." On wetting his lips, he said his usual thanksgiving after meat: "We thank Thee, O Lord, for these and all Thy mercies; bless the Church and King, and grant us truth and peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord." After some pause, he said, "The clouds drop fatness. The Lord is with us--the God of Jacob is our refuge." Most of the following night he often attempted to repeat his favourite psalm, but could only get out, "I'll praise--I'll praise." On Wednesday morning the closing scene drew near. Mr. Bradford, his old and faithful friend, now prayed with him; and the last word he was heard to articulate was, Farewell! A few minutes before ten o'clock in the morning, on the second day of March, 1791, while a number of his friends were kneeling around his bed, without a lingering groan, did this blessed man of God enter into the joy of his Lord....

Book The Rich Heritage of Stewart Memorial United Methodist Church

Download or read book The Rich Heritage of Stewart Memorial United Methodist Church written by Jake Miller and published by Backintyme. This book was released on 2011 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on Wings of Faith In 1868, with the nation in general disarray following the American Civil War, the Methodist Church began to form mission churches for freed Blacks in the South. It was out of these mission efforts that the historically important Stewart Memorial Methodist Church was founded in 1893 Daytona, Florida. In 1939, when several Methodist Churches reunited and assumed the title Methodist Church, Black Methodist Churches were included, but they were placed in the segregated Central Jurisdiction of the Methodist Church. Stewart Memorial Episcopal Church was renamed Stewart Memorial Methodist Church. There was still another change to come. When serveral Methodist-based churches united in 1967 and became the United Methodist Church, Stewart Memorial assumed its present name, Stewart Memorial United Methodist Church. Since its beginning, more than forty ministers have served pastoral charges at Stewart Memorial. Through the years, the United Methodist Church evolved, and so did Stewart Memorial, but the basis foundation of Methodism was unshakable. Methodism, as perceived by John Wesley, emphasized small group worship, which was described as: "A company of men having the form and seeking the power of godliness, united in order to pray together, to receive the word of exhortation, and to watch over one another in love, that they may help each other to work out their salvation." Making up these small groups under Wesley were those who had "a desire to flee from the wrath to come, and to be saved from their sins." It is upon the sound foundation of Methodism, as emphasized by Wesley, that Stewart Memorial was founded and continues to exist.

Book excerpt: We live in a world of noise. Everywhere we go, we hear sounds that compete for our minds and hearts. Listening to God requires a deliberate choice to shut out the chaos around us and focus our thoughts. Listen, by Rueben P. Job, is a 40-day experience created to offer help to those new to prayer, those with a daily prayer routine, and those whose lives seem too busy to pray. With a focus on listening prayer and prayer as a two-way conversation, the experience will assist individuals and groups in building and deepening a personal prayer practice and spiritual discernment. As we learn to listen, we find a new depth and fulfillment in our relationship with God and a new experience of God as guide and companion in our lives. The daily prayer pattern includes an invitation, silence, Bible reading, a story, guided time for reflecting and listening, and practical help for developing six specific prayer practices. Listen is perfect for use by individuals, small groups, or congregations during Lent, Easter, or any time of year.
