Book excerpt: The Collected Works of Irving Langmuir, Volume 4: Electrical Discharge is a 12-chapter text that covers the fundamental and theoretical aspects of electrical discharge, with a particular emphasis on discharge in gases. The opening chapters are concerned the negative probes as being due to the random positive-ion current of the plasma and the proper space-charge with a very simple discharge tube and some miscellaneous experiments on a simple tube in which streamer type discharges were observed, as well as the effects of small amounts of tungsten in the argon discharge. These topics are followed by discussions on the verification of the Langmuir Probe-Theory; the disturbing effects of mercury vapor blast from the cathode spot on the mercury pool; and the phenomena observed in the low pressure discharges. Other chapters explore the Faraday dark space of the glow discharge and how the electrons of a beam in a plasma are given their higher velocity components. The final chapters introduce the concept of plasma oscillation. This book will be of value to electronics engineers and technical workers.

Book Pulsed Electrical Discharge in Vacuum

Download or read book Pulsed Electrical Discharge in Vacuum written by Gennadiĭ Andreevich Mesi︠a︡t︠s︡ and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an up-to-date review of studies in the physics of pulsed electrical discharges in a vacuum. It gives the reader detailed information on the processes occurring at electrodes and in vacuum gaps and on the mechanisms of discharge initiation and development. Modern techniques and equipment are described in detail. Their high temporal and spatial resolution may be used to solve a number of problems concerning the short-term and microscopic aspects of discharges. A summary is given of a great deal of experimental data on the kinetics of vacuum breakdown. The authors used these results to identify a series of steps in the vacuum breakdown phenomenon. They were the first to discover and describe the explosive electron emission phenomenon and to show its fundamental role in the spark and the arc stages of a discharge. The information in this book may encourage the reader to design new experiments. The results presented may be applied to solve specific research or engineering problems.

Book Investigations Into Electrical Discharges in Gases

Download or read book Investigations Into Electrical Discharges in Gases written by B. N. Klyarfel'D and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations into Electrical Discharges in Gases is a compilation of scientific articles that covers the advances in the investigation of the fundamental processes occurring in electrical discharges in gases and vapors. The book details the different aspects of the whole life cycle of an arc, which include the initiation of a discharge, its transition into an arc, the lateral spread of the arc column, and the recovery of electric strength after extinction of an arc. The text also discusses the methods for the dynamic measurement of vapor density in the vicinity of electrical discharges, along with the method for determining the surface current density at an anode. The selection will be of great use to researchers and practitioners of disciplines that deal with basic gas discharge.

Book An Introduction to Gas Discharges

Download or read book An Introduction to Gas Discharges written by A. M. Howatson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Gas Discharges: Second Edition aims to provide a compact introduction to the subject of gas discharges, which continues to make both scientific and industrial progress. In this second edition, the author has made minor corrections, rewritten and expanded some sections, used SI units and modernized notions, in hopes of making the book more up to date. Included in the book is a short history of the subject, an introduction that enumerates the types of gas discharges, the fundamental processes, and then moves on to the more specific areas such as the breakdown, the self-sustaining discharge, equilibrium, plasma properties and measurements, and the technological applications of gas discharges. Concise and easy to understand, the text is for students and researchers who wish to learn the subject and prepare them for more advanced readings.

Book On the Laws Governing Electric Discharges in Gases at Low Pressures Classic Reprint

Download or read book On the Laws Governing Electric Discharges in Gases at Low Pressures Classic Reprint written by W. R. Carr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Laws Governing Electric Discharges in Gases at Low Pressures The researches of recent years have conclusively settled the general connection between the spark potential and the pressure of a gas. It is now well known that as the pressure of a gas diminishes the difference Of potential necessary to produce a discharge between electrodes in the gas, a fixed distance apart, also diminishes, until, at a critical pressure, the spark potential reaches a minimum value. It is further established that below the critical pressure the potential difference required to produce discharge rapidly increases as the pressure is lowered. This connection between the spark potential and the corresponding pressure of a gas has been well illustrated in a series of curves drawn by peace, * who investigated the sparking potentials between a pair of parallel plates at pressures ranging from one-half an atmosphere down to a little below the critical pressure.
