Book excerpt: Excerpt from The McClung Genealogy: A Genealogical and Biographical Record of the McClung Family From the Time of Their Emigration to the Year 1904 Fifteen years ago I began to search for the descendants of my father's eldest uncle - James McClung. I searched eight years and a half before I succeeded in finding them. While searching for these, however, I discovered several hundred other McClungs, of whom I had never heard before. At first I had no thought of publishing the results of my research, but as time passed and the genealogical data began to accumulate, the necessity for preserving it in a more permanent form and giving it a wider circulation became apparent. The record will be found to lack uniformity, owing to the fact that my system of registration was not complete when the work began, but developed as the work proceeded. The record begins with the earliest known ancestor and traces the descendants of his eldest son down to date, then traces the descendants of the second son and then the third, and so on to the youngest. Two numbers, separated by a hyphen, precede each name. The first number represents the number of the child in the family. The second number represents the generation to which he belongs. The volume contains a record of nine generations, including the names of about 3,500 McClungs, exclusive of those who have acquired the name by marriage into the family. The length of the biographical sketches does not represent the relative merit of the individuals. Many who deserve extensive mention do not receive it because either they or their kindred have neglected my repeated requests for information concerning them. No attempt has been made either to flatter or to slander any one. The names of the various branches are chosen arbitrarily. They are neither inclusive nor exclusive. For example, the Pittsburgh branch does not include all the McClungs who live in Pittsburgh. On the other hand, some who belong to the Pittsburgh branch do not live in Pittsburgh or even in the State of Pennsylvania. Again, the Texas branch constitutes but a very small proportion of those bearing the name McClung who live in Texas. Book excerpt: George Hobson, Sr. (ca. 1677-1748), was born in England, and died in Frederick Co., Virginia. He was an apple farmer. George and his wife Elizabeth supposedly arrived in Philadelphia in 1697 from England. They had not been definitely located until 1732 when they are found in Orange Co., Va. (what is now Berkeley Co., West Virginia). Prior to Orange County they most likely lived in Chester Co., Pennsylvania. They had one son, George Hobson, Jr. (ca. 1716-1797), born in Chester Co., Pa. and died in Chatham Co., North Carolina. He married (1) Hannah Elizabeth Kinnison (ca. 1717-1761), daughter of Edward Kinnison and Mary Greenaway, in 1732 in Burlington Co., N.J. He married (2) Rebekah? ca. 1761. Fourteen children are recorded in this book, he supposedly had twenty. Descendants live in North Carolina, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oregon, Arkansas, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Kansas, California, North Dakota, Utah, Arizona and elsewhere.

He married ca. 1825 Rosanna (Rhonde) Miller (ca. 1806-1870/80). They had nine children. Descendants live in North Carolina, Alabama, Texas and elsewhere.
