Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portland Cement: Its Manufacture and Use The following monograph is the outgrowth of a Short course of lectures delivered by me each year to the Junior Engineering students of the State University of Iowa, upon Limes, Mortars and Cements. Owing to the great increase in the amount of Portland cement used and the great value it possesses as a building material, this monograph treats only of the making, testing and using of Portland cement. The term Portland Cement as here used means an artificial cement made by mixing in certain known propor tions, clay and chalk containing silica, alumina, iron, and carbonate of lime, and burning this mixture to; the point of incipient vitrifaction and then reducing this burned product to an impalpable powder. The term Portland Cement primarily means an artificial mixture. The term Natural Portland has very much the same meaning as natural artificial would have. Book Portland Cement

Download or read book Portland Cement written by Richard K. Meade and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portland Cement: Its Composition, Raw Materials, Manufacture, Testing and Analysis The present treatise upon Portland cement is really the second edition of a small manual by the writer, published some four years ago, called "The Chemical and Physical Examination of Portland Cement." In preparing this new edition, it seemed wise to add a section on the manufacture of Portland cement, for the reason that the chemist who is to intelligently supervise the process of manufacture, as well as the chemist who is to report upon the raw materials and the engineer who is to inspect the product, should have a good, general knowledge of the technology of Portland cement. It was also found necessary to rewrite almost the entire section upon the physical testing of cement in order to give special prominence to the uniform methods of testing adopted by the American Society of Civil Engineers, and to the standard specifications of the American Society for Testing Materials. Much new matter has also been added to the section on the analysis of cement and its raw materials, and sections on the experimental manufacture of small lots of cement and on the history of the industry have been included. The analytical methods have all been used to some extent in the writer's laboratory and have been found satisfactory. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Manufacture of Portland Cement In the somewhat censorious remarks, which Mr. Lipowitz considers it necessary to make regarding English Cement and its manufacturers, I will simply observe that a fair share of his reproof, in my opinion, should be borne by his countrymen; when excessive rivalry exists amongst merchants in supplying an imported article, like Cement, the tricks and evasions practised can only be successfully encountered by the vigilance of the consumer. Were rigid tests universally applied, adulterated or inferior Cement would cease to be made. N o manufacturer would be found to risk the production of an article that could not find a market. Book The Science and Art of the Manufacture of Portland Cement

Download or read book The Science and Art of the Manufacture of Portland Cement written by Henry Reid and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science and Art, of the Manufacture of Portland Cement: With Observations on Some of Its Constructive Applications During the last ten years great progress has been made in the knowledge of Portland Cement, and its use has in consequence been extended in a remarkable degree. Engineering works, more especially in the direction of docks and harbours, have given an impetus to its application, securing for it a position of unchallenged importance. This increasing appreciation of its valuable constructive properties has secured a more reliable quality, which the manufacturers are now ambitious to maintain. Since 1868, when my book on the manufacture of Portland Cement was published, the production of Cement has more than doubled in the London district alone. This gratifying increase, and the accompanying prosperity of the Cement-maker, has not yet led to much improvement in the processes of manufacture, so as to cheapen its cost or render it more acceptable to the consumer. In Germany a more healthy feeling prevails, and no effort is wanting on the part of the manufacturers of Portland Cement to extend the range of its usefulness by the adoption of the best and latest improvements which technical skill can devise. In furtherance of this object the mutual co-operation of makers and users is secured with such profitable results as a confiding interchange of ideas must command. The first fruit of such a combination has resulted in the establishment of uniform testing on a basis sound enough to secure accurate returns, controlled by the best available scientific guidance.
