Download or read book The Mastery of the Pacific written by Archibald R. Colquhoun and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mastery of the Pacific The writer of this book has long been a traveller in foreign lands and a student of foreign affairs, but more especially of the questions which find their focus in the Far East. Among the changes and shiftings of human activity which have taken place in the world's history, none have been more striking than those which are rapidly transforming the great ocean zone of the Pacific. Remoteness and isolation are becoming less and less possible over the face of the globe, as distance is annihilated by modern science, but the vast Pacific, until quite recent times, deserved the name bestowed on it by its earliest discoverer, and was free from the entanglements of modern politics. On its borders, however, great changes were taking place, young Powers were arising, and at the appointed time the barriers were cast down and the Pacific became an arena for the ambitious of the nations and a highway for international commerce. That the future of more than one Great Power will be decided in this arena, where will occur the great struggle of the twentieth century, was the conviction borne in on the writer by many events that cast their shadow before. He therefore determined to study for himself such portions of the ocean territories as had hitherto been un-visited by him and to renew his acquaintance with others. Download or read book Master Hands in the Affairs of the Pacific Coast written by Western Historical Publishing Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Master Hands in the Affairs of the Pacific Coast: Historical, Biographical and Descriptive; A Resume of the Builders of Our Material Progress This volume is designed mainly to furnish information concerning the facilities and of this Coast, that the most comprehensive spirit of enterprise may be awakened at home, and increased patronage and favor come from abroad. While it will deal with the past in a brief measure, it has chiefly to do with the future, by directing in the present, the attention of skill and capital to our vast resources, and encouraging those powerful levers of industrial progression to utilize more thoroughly the facts which demonstrate the superiority of this section as a manufacturing and commercial centre. It is not claimed that this work is perfect - the difliculties in obtaining essential information have made that much desired end an impossibility - yet the utmost care has been exercised in collecting and presenting the matter to make it not only acceptable to the general reader, but in the highest degree valuable to the manufacturer. In every instance, with a solitary exception, my application has met with a hearty response, and much interest has been expressed in the work, and many encouraging words have been Spoken which have been highly appreciated. And while acknowledging Obligations to helpers, I wish especially to name the valuable service which my life long friend and fellow-labourer, the Rev. Dr. Turner, has rendered in editing the work as it has passed through the press, and which is the third service of the kind which he and Mrs. Turner have rendered me within a few years. To them therefore I owe a very large debt of gratitude. May the Master whom we serve amply recompense them. And to another esteemed brother, the Rev. S. M. Creagh, I am also under special obligations. He, in addition to furnishing information relative to translation work on the Loyalty Islands, has read over the manuscript with me, and in that way has rendered very valuable help. Book The Battle for the Pacific Vol 1

Download or read book The Battle for the Pacific Vol 1 written by Rowan Stevens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle for the Pacific, Vol. 1: And Other Adventures at Sea When we became a great Pacific power, and undertook new responsibilities in acquiring Hawaii and the Philippines, we gained new neighbors. Among them is the gallant nation of Japan, whose bravery in war and mastery Of the arts have caused the whole world to wonder. In the middle Of the nineteenth cen tury our country introduced Japan to the outer world, and the friendship begun then will, we trust, continue always. Some of the story tellers in this book have selected Japan as an antagonist in their imaginative pictures of future wars, and others have chosen England. But the fact that an En'glishmm or Japanese or an American plays a fighting part in a story and comes to grief does not assuredly mean any hostile prediction or expression of ill-will towards his particular country. Quite aside from the dramatic interest of our tales Of great naval encounters, some Of these ingenious stories lead to results which would quickly put an end to war - a result to be earnestly hoped for. Book Paradise of the Pacific

Download or read book Paradise of the Pacific written by Herbert H. Gowen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paradise of the Pacific: Sketches of Hawaiian Scenery and Life I should like to tell you how I got into bed beneath the mosquito curtain, an immense bridal-veil sort of thing which effectually screens you, if (and there is much virtue in an if') you can get in without admitting the blood suckers. Unhappily, mosquitoes are like Sunday School children, very skilful at getting in to treats without a ticket, so in the darksomeness of the night, when the light is out and you are in, you may often hear the shrill blare which proclaims your enemy watchful at your pillow, and then - get him out if you can! Oh, sleep! Nature's sweet restorer, balmy sleep, ' in such dire case we may woo thee well and yet in vain. But there is always some drawback everywhere, and after all, mosquitoes, I am told, rarely trouble you for more than a month, after which you become in their eyes a squeezed lemon, or a well drawn dry. Book Environmental History in the Pacific World

Download or read book Environmental History in the Pacific World written by J.R. McNeill and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a set of key articles from the last 30 years pertaining to the environmental history of the Pacific basin. It aims to treat the islands and waters of the Pacific as well as the lands around the Rim, from New Zealand to Japan, to California, to Chile, and is the first work of environmental history to take this inclusive view of the Pacific basin. The focus is mainly on recent centuries but, as environmental history requires, at times the work also takes the very long view of millennia. Several of the articles seek to bring a broad Pacific perspective to bear on their subjects, while others use Pacific-basin examples to try to establish broader theoretical points of interest to all who are drawn to the study of the interactions between nature and culture. The book includes a bibliography of Pacific-basin environmental history and an introduction that aims to sketch the contours and possible future directions of the field.

Download or read book To the Pacific and Back Classic Reprint written by J. A. I. Washburn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from To the Pacific and Back These letters were commenced as we started on our trip across the continent, with no idea of their continuance, but they met with favor at home, and the pleasure of sharing with my children the im pressions stamped upon my own mind by the various scenes that we passed through, and the relief afforded to the monotony of many an other wise weary hour, induced me to persevere. Upon our return we found that all of the little penciled leaves had been kept intact, but were exceedingly inconvenient for ready reference; hence their appearance in this form, supplemented by some of my husband's letters, which fill gaps occurring in my own, portions referring to merely personal matters being omitted. I dedicate this little volume to my children, to whom the letters were originally addressed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
