Book The Manchester Quarterly Vol 23

Download or read book The Manchester Quarterly Vol 23 written by John Heywood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manchester Quarterly, Vol. 23: A Journal of Literature and Art In a former paper I attempted to explain and elucidate some of the lampoons launched against Shakespeare in the earliest part of his public career. They were, in great part, the wail of angry and disappointed men; the bitter and malignant expressions of feeling of jealous and envious rivals. These saluted him almost at the outset of his London life, from his first rise above the horizon of his adverse fortunes and pristine obscurity. These calumnious attacks of his literary competitors ranged between 1586 and 1594, and comprised the libels of Greene and Nash and Chettle. I propose now to deal with a second fusillade of paper bullets to which the poet was subjected. The period was about twelve years later, viz., between 1598 and 1606. With increase of wisdom came increase of sorrow. The poet's enlarged experience entailed a more savage enmity. The probation, in this sense, was, therefore, neither unexciting nor uneventful. But I do not propose to deal with these assaults on the fortress of the author's fair fame, except incidentally. Book Reconstructing Urban Economics

Download or read book Reconstructing Urban Economics written by Franklin Obeng-Odoom and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2016-08-15 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neoclassical economics, the intellectual bedrock of modern capitalism, faces growing criticisms, as many of its key assumptions and policy prescriptions are systematically challenged. Yet, there remains one field of economics where these limitations continue virtually unchallenged: the study of cities and regions in built-environment economics. In this book, Franklin Obeng-Odoom draws on institutional, Georgist and Marxist economics to clearly but comprehensively show what the key issues are today in thinking about urban economics. In doing so, he demonstrates the widespread tensions and contradictions in the status quo, showing how to reconstruct urban economics in order to create a more just society and environment.

Book Shakespeare s Roman Plays

Download or read book Shakespeare s Roman Plays written by Paul Innes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rome was a recurring theme throughout Shakespeare's career, from the celebrated Julius Caesar, to the more obscure Cymbeline. In this book, Paul Innes assesses themes of politics and national identity in these plays through the common theme of Rome. He especially examines Shakespeare's interpretation of Rome and how he presented it to his contemporary audiences. Shakespeare's depiction of Rome changed over his lifetime, and this is discussed in conjunction with the emergence of discourses on the British Empire. Each chapter focuses on a play, which is thoroughly analysed, with regard to both performance and critical reception. Shakespeare's plays are related to the theatrical culture of their time and are considered in light of how they might have been performed to his contemporaries. Innes engages strongly with both the plays the most current scholarship in the field.

Book excerpt: "A proudly partisan history of the British aristocracy - which scores some shrewd hits against the upper class themselves, and the nostalgia of the rest of us for their less endearing eccentricities. A great antidote to Downton Abbey." (Mary Beard) Exploring the extraordinary social and political dominance enjoyed by the British aristocracy over the centuries, Entitled seeks to explain how a tiny number of noble families rose to such a position in the first place. It reveals the often nefarious means they have employed to maintain their wealth, power and prestige and examines the greed, ambition, jealousy and rivalry which drove aristocratic families to guard their interests with such determination. In telling their history, Entitled introduces a cast of extraordinary characters: fierce warriors, rakish dandies, political dilettantes, charming eccentrics, arrogant snobs and criminals who quite literally got away with murder.

Book Past and Present

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Chapman
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2005-09-23
  • ISBN : 0857715577
  • Pages : 417 pages

Download or read book Past and Present written by James Chapman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-09-23 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book takes as its focal point director Ken Loach's view that 'The only reason to make films that are a reflection on history is to talk about the present.' In the first book to take on this major genre in all its complexity, James Chapman argues that historical films say as much about the times in which they are made as about the past they purport to portray. Through in-depth case studies of fourteen key films spanning the 1930s up to the turn of the twenty first century, from The Private Life of Henry VIII and Zulu to Chariots of Fire and Elizabeth, Chapman examines the place of historical films in British cinema history and film culture. Looking closely at the issues that they present, from gender, class and ethnicity to militarism and imperialism, he also discusses controversies over historical accuracy, and the ways in which devices such as voice overs, title captions, and visual references to photographs and paintings assert a sense of historical verisimilitude. Exploring throughout the book the dialectical relationship between past and present, Chapman reveals how such films promote British achievements - but also sometimes question them - and how they project images of 'Britishness' to audiences both in the UK and internationally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manchester Quarterly, Vol. 26: A Journal of Literature and Art Giggleswick, embosomed in greenery of trees and gardens, and nestling in a steep irregular way at the foot of a great limestone scar, is in some of its Old-world features more quaintly attractive than Settle. Through one of its streets a little brook finds a channel, and it has a grand old church, an ancient cross and stocks, and many stone-built, garden-graced, mullion-windowed houses, one of which, of exceptional quaintness, Mrs. Linnaeus Banks has used as the central point, and the scene for many stirring incidents in one of her novels. Giggleswick is famous for its school, about which, in its Stately buildings, its green-swarded terrace, and its tree-shaded woodland environments, there is a. Sense of academic repose.
