Book Woody Plants Evolution and Distribution Since the Tertiary

Download or read book Woody Plants Evolution and Distribution Since the Tertiary written by Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1989-03-31 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paleobotany has enormously expanded the documentation of fossil plant groups, floras and vegetation types, supporting its conclusions by technically much improved analyses of microfossils (pollen) and anatomical details. An increasing quantity and quality of all these informations from the geosciences is available when we follow the history of the biosphere up to the present. Simultaneously, research from the biosciences on the morphology, ecology, distribution, systematics and evolution of extant vascular plants, and on the ecogeographical differentiation of the vegetation cover of our planet, has made enormous progress. Thus, a synthetic geo- and bioscientific approach becomes more and more feasible and urgent for further advances in the many problems of common concern. A symposium organized by the "Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher LEOPOLDINA", attractive to paleo- and neobotanists, stimulated the discussion between specialists of the two disciplines. The main results of the symposium are now presented in this volume: Sixteen international contributions outline the current knowledge about the historical differentiation and evolution of woody plant groups and forests, covering the whole biosphere. This survey, from the beginning of the Tertiary up to the present, is a first systhesis of relevant data from the geo- and biosciences.

Book The Evolution of Plant Physiology

Download or read book The Evolution of Plant Physiology written by Alan R. Hemsley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-02-05 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coupled with biomechanical data, organic geochemistry and cladistic analyses utilizing abundant genetic data, scientific studies are revealing new facets of how plants have evolved over time. This collection of papers examines these early stages of plant physiology evolution by describing the initial physiological adaptations necessary for survival as upright structures in a dry, terrestrial environment. The Evolution of Plant Physiology also encompasses physiology in its broadest sense to include biochemistry, histology, mechanics, development, growth, reproduction and with an emphasis on the interplay between physiology, development and plant evolution. - Contributions from leading neo- and palaeo-botanists from the Linnean Society - Focus on how evolution shaped photosynthesis, respiration, reproduction and metabolism. - Coverage of the effects of specific evolutionary forces -- variations in water and nutrient availability, grazing pressure, and other environmental variables

Book Paleobiology of the Williamsburg Formation Black Mingo Group Paleocene of South Carolina U S A

Download or read book Paleobiology of the Williamsburg Formation Black Mingo Group Paleocene of South Carolina U S A written by Albert E. Sanders and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 1998 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a print on demand publication. The excavation of an immense pit near the Santee River in South Carolina has produced the first Paleocene vertebrate fauna from the South Atlantic coast of the U.S., as well as a rich flora that provides extensive knowledge of the paleoenvironmental setting in which those animals flourished nearly 60 million years ago. The excavation penetrated the Late Paleocene Williamsburg Formation & yielded many specimens collected from the spoil piles, among which were the first Paleocene mammal remains from the east coast of North America. Here, eight paleobiologists interpret the discoveries systematically & compare them with Paleocene floras & faunas from elsewhere in North America & around the globe. Auhors include: Bruce Erickson (crocodilians & a snake); Robert Weems (bony fishes); Weems & Laurel Bybell (geological setting); Lucy Edwards (dinoflagellates); Robert Melchior (pollen, spores, fossil wood, & amber); Robert Purdy (sharks & rays); Howard Hutchison & Robert Weems (turtles); Robert Schoch (mammals), Glenn Sawyer (coprolites); & Erickson & Melchior (trace fossils). "One of the most significant contributions to our knowledge of early Tertiary times in this region."

Book Historical Ecology of the British Flora

Download or read book Historical Ecology of the British Flora written by M. Ingrouille and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The native British flora is today relatively ant species on the continent, such as Picea impoverished. Today the British Isles has a abies (Norway spruce), did not get into Britain flora of only about 1500 species of native in time. However, we must not over flowering plants. France and Spain, each emphasize the importance of Britain being an geographically only about twice the area, island. A comparison of floras on either side have 3-4 times as many species each. The of the English Channel shows that there are comparison is more marked when consider species present in England and not in ing the endemic species, those specialities of northern France as well as vice versa. Many each geographical region which grow of the species present in northern France but nowhere else. If only normal sexual species absent from England are weeds adapted to are considered, then there are only about 13 French agriculture. Others may be limited endemic species in the British Isles while 1000 not by the sea but by the climate. species are endemic to Spain. Nevertheless, the example of Ireland, However, the poverty of the British flora is which was isolated much earlier than the rest not a unique phenomenon. The whole of of the British Isles, does show the effect of north-western Europe, an area including isolation because it does have a much poorer northern France and much of Germany and flora and fauna.
