Book excerpt: Donald Hankey was a writer who saw himself as a ’student of human nature’ and peacetime Edwardian Britain as a society at war with itself. Wounded in a murderous daylight infantry charge near Ypres, Hankey began sending despatches to The Spectator from hospital in 1915. Trench life, wrote Hankey, taught that ’the gentleman’ is a type not a social class. In one calm, humane, eyewitness report after another under the byline ’A Student in Arms’, Hankey revealed how the civilian volunteers of Kitchener’s Army, many with little stake in Edwardian society, put their betters to shame nonetheless. A runaway best-seller on both sides of the Atlantic, Hankey’s prose vied in popularity with the poetry of Rupert Brooke. After he was killed on the Somme in another daylight infantry charge, Hankey joined Brooke as an international symbol of promise foregone. British propaganda backed publication in the-then neutral United States, yet at home Hankey had to dodge the censors to tell the truth as he saw it. This, the first scholarly biography, has been made possible by the recovery of Hankey papers long thought lost. Dr Davies traces the life of an Edwardian rebel from privileged birth into a banking dynasty that had owned slaves to spokesman for the ordinary man who, when put to the test of battle, proves to be not-so-ordinary. This study of Hankey’s life, writing and vast audience - military and civilian - enlarges our understanding of how throughout the English-speaking world people managed to fight or endure a war for which little had prepared them.

Book A Student In Arms

  • Author : Donald Strachey
  • Publisher : Pickle Partners Publishing

Download or read book A Student In Arms written by Donald Strachey and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Donald Hankey returned home from a posting with the Royal Garrison Artillery in Mauritius, following a serious bout of illness, it seemed as though he was destined for a career in the Church. Finding the clergy schools to be too stultifying, he set to work in missionary positions in the most impoverished communities in the east of London. As the First World War began to take its ominous toll of men, the first of Kitchener’s recruiting calls was heard throughout the Empire; Hankey eschewed returning to the army as an officer and decided to enlist as a “gentleman ranker”. However, his previous military experience marked him out and he was promoted, soon after which he would embark on his first tour of duty on the Western Front. Wounded at Ypres in a daylight infantry charge across no man’s land, and having been published previously, he began to send articles to the Spectator from the front. He finally met his end on 12th October 1916 during the later phases of the battle of the Somme. John St Loe Strachey, the then editor of The Spectator, put together the articles along with unpublished papers to produce the two volume “A Student In Arms” as a tribute and memorial to Donald Hankey. Initially published in America to ensure that it passed censorship, it became a bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic in short order running to many editions (this text is taken from the 16th edition). The two volumes are often reflective in tone, between the jingoistic volumes produced at the beginning of the war and the despairing disillusioned books produced afterward. It is also clear the affinity that Hankey felt for the common soldier, and made no secret of the fact that he believed that the ranker who had so little to gain from sacrificing himself for the society at home put many of his supposed betters to shame.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Christians, we are trying to be more like Jesus and constantly falling short of that goal. The forty sermons in this book explore how anyone can be more like Jesus, including those who have not yet given themselves to Christ. In fact, at the end of each sermon you’ll see an invitation to do so, and the back of the book includes a prayer that will allow you to be born again as a child of God. The sermons are written in a way that can be understood by people from every walk of life. They are easy to read and expound on the Word of God so you can take him into your heart. The sermons also emphasize that as Christians, we are held to a higher standard as we must love everyone—even those who are evil. We love them because God loves them. Whether you’re a Christian seeking to ignite your faith or someone with questions about Christianity, the sermons in this book will change your life.

Book The Church of England and the First World War

Download or read book The Church of England and the First World War written by Alan Wilkinson and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Church of England and the First World War (first published in 1978) explores in depth the role of the church during the tragic circumstances of the First World War using biographies, newspapers, magazines, letters, poetry and other sources in a balanced evaluation. The myth that the war was fought by 'lions led by donkeys' powerfully endures turning heroes into victims. Alan Wilkinson demonstrates the sheer horror, moral ambiguity, and the interaction between religion, the church and warwith a scholarly, and yet poetic, hand. The author creates a vivid image of the church and society, includes views of the Free Churches and Roman Catholics, portrays the pastoral problems and challenges to faith presented by war, and the pressures for reform of church and society. The Church of England and the First World War is written with compelling compassion and great historical understanding, making the book hard to put down. This expert and classic study will grip the religious and secular alike, the general reader or the student.
