I owe them much, not only for facts, but for clews that led to facts. Book The Liquor Problem Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Liquor Problem Classic Reprint written by Norman E. Richardson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Liquor Problem With the introduction of specialized courses of study and instruction into the Sunday schools, a new day has dawned for the churches of Christ in America. And the rising sun of that new day is already high above the horizon, when adult Bible classes are free to choose for themselves from a larger number of study courses planned and written with the interests and needs of adult groups especially in mind. This happily is the situation at present, with the number and variety of courses rapidly increasing. Among the special interests that appeal most strongly to adult groups organized for study and service under the banners of the Christian church and its modern Sunday school are the burning social and community problems around which center the political and reform movements of our time. And among these the liquor problem, in its social and religious bearings, must continue to hold a central place until that glad day, now rapidly approaching, when the manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquors shall forever be forbidden throughout the length and breadth of our fair republic. The course of study presented in this little textbook on The Liquor Problem is based on the principles set forth in the Bible passages presented in connection with the separate lessons. In its subject matter it presents the latest and most dependable conclusions of modern scientific inquiry concerning the physical and social evil effects of alcoholic beverages. The author, Norman E. Richardson, occupies the chair of religious pedagogy in the Boston University School of Theology, and is a member of the Board of Sunday Schools of the Methodist Episcopal Church and Chairman of its Committee on Curriculum. Book The Year Book of the United States Brewers Association

Download or read book The Year Book of the United States Brewers Association written by United States Brewers' Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Year Book of the United States Brewers' Association: Including a Study of Local Option in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Massachusetts For the rest, the Year Book is mainly a review of the maga zine articles oi the past year in regard to the liquor business, and a digest of important new legislation. There is such an amazing mass of literature upon the various aspects of the liquor problem that it is necessary to make a discriminating selection of the ma terial, or the Year Book would be expanded into a library. Our Year Book of 1909 dealt particularly with the Social Aspects of the drink question, with special chapters on Arrests for Drunken ness, Poverty and Drink, Crime and Drink, Insanity and Drink, Mortality and Alcoholism and Prosperity and Probi bitiou. These chapters appear to have been generally accepted by thoughtful and well informed people, especially those engaged in social welfare Work, as a fair and reliable statement of the abuse of alcoholic liquors among the dependent, defective and delinquent classes. The new data of the past year merely confirm these state ments, and it is not necessary, therefore, to repeat them. The misuse of statistics in support of Prohibition and the sensational inaccuracies of the school text-books in regard to alcohol have been so severely criticized by leading educators that it Would be superfluous to do more than call attention to them here. Very little that is new and true has been written on the Physiological Aspects of the Liquor Problem since the publication of the report of the sub-committee of the Committee of Fifty 'on this subject in 1903. We have included a suggestive chapter on the subject, summarizing a recent important discussion of the British Society for the Study of Inebriety. Book The Drink Problem of Today

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Drink Problem of Today: In Its Medico-Sociological Aspects War has forced the Drink Problem into the forefront of national questions. For long, serious students of social subjects have insisted on the importance of recognizing alcohol as a deranging and deteriorating factor in the life of the State, but it has been left to these days of unexampled stress and strain to demonstrate to men and women generally the seriousness of the menace existing from the widespread prevalence of alcoholism within our own dominions. The essential facts regarding alcohol and alcoholism and associated morbid states have for long been presented with scientific precision, but the majority of the community have paid but scant heed. Now the great adventure and experiment of war with all its circumstances, conditions, and effects, has concentrated attention on the Drink Problem and has already in great measure confirmed the conclusions of scientific workers.
