Book Champion of Civil Rights

  • Author : Joel William Friedman
  • Publisher : LSU Press

  • ISBN : 0807149152
  • Pages : 511 pages

Download or read book Champion of Civil Rights written by Joel William Friedman and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the least publicly recognized heroes of the civil rights movement in the United States, John Minor Wisdom served as a member of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit from 1957 until his death in 1999 and wrote many of the landmark decisions instrumental in desegregating the American South. In this revealing biography, law professor Joel William Friedman explores Judge Wisdom's substantial legal contributions and political work at a critical time in the history of the South. In 1957, President Eisenhower appointed Wisdom to the Fifth Circuit, which included some of the most deeply segregated southern states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. In the tumultuous two decades following its decision in Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court issued only a few civil rights decisions, preferring instead to affirm Fifth Circuit Court opinions or let them stand without hearing an appeal. Judge Wisdom, therefore, authored many of the decisions that transformed the South and broke down barriers of all kinds for African Americans, including the desegregation of public schools. In preparing this first full-length biography of Judge Wisdom, Friedman had unrestricted access to Wisdom's voluminous repository of personal and professional papers. In addition, he draws on personal interviews with law clerks who served under Judge Wisdom, resulting in a unique, behind-the-scenes account of some of the nation's most important legal decisions: the admission of the first black student to the University of Mississippi, the initiation of contempt proceedings against Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett, and the destruction of obstacles that had previously kept black Americans from voting. Friedman also explores Wisdom's political life prior to joining the federal bench, including his pivotal role in resurrecting the Louisiana Republican Party and in securing the Republican presidential nomination for Eisenhower. A compelling account of how a child of privilege from one of America's most socially and racially stratified cities came to serve as the driving force behind the legal effort to end segregation, Champion of Civil Rights offers judicial biography at its best.

Book Country Boy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Colin Miller
  • Publisher : The History Press
  • Release : 2005-08-18
  • ISBN : 0750953195
  • Pages : 287 pages

Download or read book Country Boy written by Colin Miller and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2005-08-18 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colin Miller was born in 1940 in Rollesby, a village near Great Yarmouth in the heart of Broadland Norfolk. In Rollesby, as in so many other rural communities at this time, drinking water was from a well, the lavatory was a bucket in an outside privy, transport was a bicycle or a bus and entertainment was provided by the radio, whist drives at the village hall or a rare visit to the cinema. As the 1940s and 50's progressed this way of life altered dramatically, some would say disappeared - and Colin Miller chronicles these changes through the eyes of a Norfolk schoolboy and teenager. Developing themes such as school days, health, work, entertainment, sport and leisure, this honest and thoughtful account also includes brief extracts from the local newspapers, reporting local events and illustrating the social change experienced by the author. Country Boy will bring back many memories for anyone who grew up in rural Britain in the 1940s and '50s - and will also remind subsequent generations of how much life changed in just a couple of decades.

Book Manny Shwab and the George Dickel Company

Download or read book Manny Shwab and the George Dickel Company written by Clay Shwab and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was once a Tennessee whiskey that dwarfed Jack Daniel's, and a powerful man was behind it: V.E. "Manny" Shwab. Until now, virtually nothing has been written about either. Their story is one of a Jewish Alsatian immigrant's dream of finding community and prosperity in the New world; of smuggling during the Civil War; of the raging, sometimes fatal, battle against Prohibition; and of the wild side of rapidly growing Nashville during the 19th and early 20th centuries. "Manny" Shwab was a Tennessean known as the "owner" of Tennessee politics, and--because of his George Dickel company, saloons, and Cascade Whisky--the "debaucherer of more young men than anyone else in the state." He was also one of Tennesee's richest and most powerful men for four decades. This is the first full-length biography of V. E. Shwab, written by his great-grandson, and also the first complete history of the George Dickel company.
