Book The Life of Laurence Sterne Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Laurence Sterne Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Percy Fitzgerald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Laurence Sterne, Vol. 1 I have been obliged, however, to modify the too favourable opinion I entertained of Sterne's life and character, and am constrained to admit that Mr. Thackeray's view - harsh as it may seem had much to support it. Yorick's Journal, which I have read through carefully, is fatally damaging; exhibiting a repulsive combination of Pharisaical utterances and lax principle. This would seem to show that Mr. Sterne was something more than the mere philanderer he described himself to be. Mr. Elwin was long ago constrained to adopt the safne view. Indeed, it may be always fairly presumed that licentious writing is almost certain to, be followed by life and practice as licentious. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works and Life of Laurence Sterne, Vol. 1 "I have long been a sentimental Being," said Sterne the year before his death, "***The world has imagined because I wrote Tristram Shandy that I was myself more Shandean than I really ever was." It may well be that we do not come quite to the real Sterne when we regard him as he asks us to regard him in Tristram Shandy, - as the king's jester. This view was taken by an anonymous critic of his own time, who averred that "the highest excellence of this genuine, this legitimate son of humour, lies not in his humorous but in his pathetic vein." The same opinion was held by Emile Montegut, who, among the many Frenchmen that have written of Sterne, is the gayest and subtlest of them all. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Laurence Sterne, Vol. 1 of 2 Around every great man many legends arise, and biographers, annotators, and writers of articles collect a mass of detail which is heaped together until there is danger that the man will be entirely hidden from view. Sterne, indeed, has not suffered so much in this way as many other authors, but he has not escaped unscathed. I have been careful to omit every thing that seems to me unessential to the under standing of the man; but I have endeavoured to collect all that helps to build up his character. Some writers on Sterne have chosen to para phrase his letters, and have put forth in their own words what Sterne (it is no discourtesy to them to say) has expressed infinitely better in his own. The simplest and, I think, the best way to Show the great man in his habit as he lived is to allow him, whenever possible, to speak for himself. It is with this object that I have printed most of the existing letters, written by Sterne, including several that have not been reprinted since the original publication shortly after his death, as well as others from private collections. The much-discussed Jour nal to Eliza now appears for the first time in a biography Of its author. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Those who had not entered into the ludi crous manner of Rabelais, or the pot satire of Swift, did not comprehend them; but they joined with the multi tule, and pronounced Tristram Shandy very clever. Even the reviewers recommended Mr. Shandy as a writer infinite hrlnore ingenious and entertaming' than any other of the pie-exit race of novelists; adding, his chamters were strik ing and singular, his observations shrewd and pertinent, md making a few exceptions, that his humour was easy and. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Laurence Sterne, Vol. 1 of 4: Containing the Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, a Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy; Sermons, Letters, &C; With a Life of the Author The bookseller made a bow, and was going to say something, when a young decent girl, about twenty, who by her air and dress seemed to be fille de chambre to some devout woman of fashion, came into the shop and asked for Les Egarements du C ur et de l'Esprit. The bookseller gave her the book directly: she pulled out a little green satin purse, run round with a ribband of the same colour, and putting her finger and thumb into it, she took out the money and paid for it. - As I had nothing more to stay me in the shop, we both walk'd out of the door together. - And what have you to do, my dear, said I, with The Wanderings of the Heart, who scarce know yet you have one? nor, till Love has first told you it, or some faithless shepherd has made it ache, canst thou ever be sure it is so. - Le Dieu m'en garde! said the girl. - With reason, said I; for if it is a good one, 'tis a pity it should be stolen; 'tis a little treasure to thee, and gives a better air to your face than if it was dresse'd out with pearls. The young girl listened with a submissive attention, holding her satin purse by its ribband in her hand all the time. 'Tis a very small one, said I, taking hold of the bottom of it - (she held it towards me) - and there is very little in it, my dear, said I; but be but as good as thou art handsome, and Heaven will fill it. I had a parcel of crowns in my hand to pay for Shakespeare; and as she had let go the purse entirely, I put a single one in; and tying up the ribband in a bow-knot, returned it to her. The young girl made me more a humble courtesy than a low one: - 'twas one of those quiet, thankful sinkings, where the spirit bows itself down, - the body does no more than tell it. I never gave a girl a crown in my life which gave me half the pleasure. My advice, my dear, would not have been worth a pin to you, said I, if I had not given this along with it: but now, when you see the crown, you'll remember it; - so don't, my dear, lay it out in ribbands. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Laurence Sterne, Vol. 3: The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman Notwithstanding all this and much else from the learned wits, Sterne really borrowed, in the passages whereby Sterne is Sterne, nothing beyond the usual practice of men Of letters in all times. Art is all materiam superabat opus, says an Old writer presently to be quoted again. 'tis the placing, he goes on to say, of the gay feathers you take from others, and ordering 'em in such deli cate Lights and Shades, that only makes 'em so inimitably Beautiful and Lovely. That art Of placing, ordering, and transfusing with his own genius, Sterne had to a most remark able degree. The shom sheep, the y Of King James, and the sinner's penitent tear were as nothing before they received from Sterne the last touch of art and of form. Bishop War burton once presented this master in letters with a parcel of books for the improvement Of his style. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works of Laurence Sterne: With a Life of the Author Thus did sterne live, a local celebrity, till he was forty-six years Of age. This is noteworthy. Like Cowper, he was late of beginning to write for the public - that is, for fame. He wrote for fame, and found it. Before 1759, the year in which the first two volumes Of Tristram Shandy were published, sterne had printed only two sermons. He had written a. Good deal, it is true; but now, 'tired of employing his brains for other people's advantage, ' he took to his pen for his own. Accused of writing upon Iago's advice, 'put money in thy purse, ' or, as it was pedanti cally expressed, nummum in locale, he replied that he wrote, not to be fed, but to be famous. He gained what he wrote for.' He stalked into renown on his 'hobby-horse' - a compound he rendered classical in Tristram Shandy. He wanted money too - all men who write do. He mentions having taken a small house in York at the time for the education of his daughter; and this requires money. Sterne was lucky enough to encounter both praise and pudding. The dead donkey, the heart-broken Maria, the grisette at the glove-shop, the fille de chambre, so pretty and petite, are all declared to be no invention Of Yorick's.
