Book The Mormon Church and Blacks

Download or read book The Mormon Church and Blacks written by Matthew L Harris and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2015-11-15 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 1978 marked a watershed year in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as it lifted a 126-year ban on ordaining black males for the priesthood. This departure from past practice focused new attention on Brigham Young's decision to abandon Joseph Smith's more inclusive original teachings. The Mormon Church and Blacks presents thirty official or authoritative Church statements on the status of African Americans in the Mormon Church. Matthew L. Harris and Newell G. Bringhurst comment on the individual documents, analyzing how they reflected uniquely Mormon characteristics and contextualizing each within the larger scope of the history of race and religion in the United States. Their analyses consider how lifting the ban shifted the status of African Americans within Mormonism, including the fact that African Americans, once denied access to certain temple rituals considered essential for Mormon salvation, could finally be considered full-fledged Latter-day Saints in both this world and the next. Throughout, Harris and Bringhurst offer an informed view of behind-the-scenes Church politicking before and after the ban. The result is an essential resource for experts and laymen alike on a much-misunderstood aspect of Mormon history and belief.

Book Church History Study Guide Pt 3

Download or read book Church History Study Guide Pt 3 written by Randal S. Chase and published by Plain & Precious Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church History Study Guide, Pt. 3: Latter-Day Prophets Since 1844. This volume is the third of three on Church History and the Doctrine and Covenants. It covers Church history during the administration of all of its Prophet-Prophets since Joseph Smith. It begins with the succession of the Apostles after Joseph Smith?s martyrdom, the building of the Nauvoo Temple, and the trek to the west of the Latter-day Saint pioneers. We follow them through Iowa, Winter Quarters, and on to Utah. We witness the colonization of the state of Deseret, while the rest of the country suffered from Civil War. Then we follow events through the administrations of all of the 19th-Century, 20th-Century, and 21st-Century prophets from John Taylor to Thomas S. Monson. We become familiar with the early lives, missions, marriages, and callings of each of these prophets, seeing how the Lord prepared them for the particular time that they led the Church. We finish with a look toward the future as we await the Second Coming of our Lord. The cover features a beautiful photograph of the Salt Lake Temple, taken at dusk during the Christmas season from the roof of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.

  • Author : Philip L. Barlow
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2013-06-11
  • ISBN : 0190453834
  • Pages : 349 pages

Download or read book Mormons and the Bible written by Philip L. Barlow and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-11 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip L. Barlow offers an in-depth analysis of the approaches taken to the Bible by major Mormon leaders, from its beginnings to the present. He shows that Mormon attitudes toward the Bible comprise an extraordinary mix of conservative, liberal, and radical ingredients: an almost fundamentalist adherence to the King James Version co-exists with belief in the possibility of new revelation and surprising ideas about the limits of human language. Barlow's exploration takes important steps toward unraveling the mystery of this quintessential American religious phenomenon. This updated edition of Mormons and the Bible includes an extended bibliography and a new preface, casting Joseph Smith's mission into a new frame and treating evolutions in Mormonism's biblical usage in recent decades.

Book Ashamed of Joseph

    Book Details:
  • Author : Steven A. Crane
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2011-03-22
  • ISBN : 1610972198
  • Pages : 187 pages

Download or read book Ashamed of Joseph written by Steven A. Crane and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-03-22 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mormon Prophet and Tenth President, Joseph Fielding Smith, once said: Mormonism, as it is called, must stand or fall on the story of Joseph Smith. He was either a prophet of God, divinely called, properly appointed and commissioned, or he was one of the biggest frauds this world has ever seen. There is no middle ground. If Joseph Smith was a deceiver, who willfully attempted to mislead the people, then he should be exposed; his claims should be refuted, and his doctrines shown to be false . . . The doctrines of false teachers will not stand the test when tried by the accepted standards of measurement, the Scriptures. --Doctrines of Salvation, 1:188. Brigham Young, Prophet and Second President offered this challenge: Well, now examine the character of the Savior, and examine the character of those who have written the Old and New Testament; and then compare them with the character of Joseph Smith, the founder of this work . . . and you will find that his character stands as fair as that of any man's mentioned in the Bible. We can find no person who presents a better character to the world . . . than Joseph Smith. --Journal of Discourses, Vol. 14, p. 203. Combining their research in Mormonism to author this work, Charles A. Crane and his son, Steven A. Crane, would like to accept the challenge and show why many, even among the LDS faith, are Ashamed of Joseph.

Book Origin of the Reorganized Church and the Question of Succession

Download or read book Origin of the Reorganized Church and the Question of Succession written by Joseph Fielding Smith and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Origin of the 'Reorganized' Church and the Question of Succession" by Joseph Fielding Smith, Jr. is a doctrinal book. During the summer of 1906 and continuing until the summer of 1907, a number of Reorganite ministers who were engaged in missionary work in Salt Lake City and Ogden, were greatly encouraged by one or two apostates and the local anti-"Mormon" press. Their method of proselyting was of the usual nature, a tirade of abuse and false accusation hurled at the authorities of the Church. Encouraged by the anti-"Mormon" help, they became extremely vindictive in their references to President Brigham Young and the present Church authorities. Their sermons were so bitter and malignant—which has been the character of most of their work from the beginning, in Utah—that they raised considerable protest from many respectable citizens. Even non-"Mormons" declared that in no other community would such vicious attacks be tolerated.
