Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This represents the first study devoted to the life and after-life of St John of Beverley. The hagiographic works on John extend over nearly six hundred years from the 8th to the 15th centuries. Wilson uses these sources as a unique opportunity to examine the ways in which an Anglo-Saxon saint was promoted over a long period of time and was continually re-created in the image which the hagiographers or community required, depending on their current needs and perceptions. The volume also includes the first English translations of the Life and the miracle stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Henry St. John, Viscount Bolingbroke: Secretary of States in the Reign of Queen Anne The lives of Lord Bolingbroke and Edmund Burke illustrate each other. They may be said to embrace the whole political history of the eighteenth century; and from the very different characters of the two men, the very different principles they announced, and the very different causes they advocated, form a curious con trast, and a most instructive study. The biography of the one statesman may rightly be considered a companion to the biography of the other. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The tragic tale of the sinking of the famine ship, the St. John in Massachusetts Bay in 1849. The Great Irish Famine drove huge numbers of Irish men and women to leave the island and pursue their survival in foreign lands. In 1847, some 200,000 people sailed for Boston alone. Of this massive group, 2,000 never made it to their destination, killed by disease and hunger during the voyages, their remains consigned to a watery grave. The sinking of the brig St. John off the coast of Massachusetts in October 1849, was only one of many tragic events to occur during this mass exodus. The ship had sailed from Galway, loaded with passengers so desperate to escape the effects of famine that some had walked from as far afield as Clare to reach the ship. The passengers on the St. John made it to within sight of the New World before their ship went down and they were abandoned by their captain, who denied that there had been any survivors when he and some of his crew made it ashore. For those who died in the seas off Massachusetts, there was nothing to mark their last resting place; no name, no memory of them ever having existed, just another statistic in a terrible tragedy.

Book Henry VIII

Download or read book Henry VIII written by John Matusiak and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling new account of Henry VIII is by no means yet another history of the ‘old monster’ and his reign. The ‘monster’ displayed here is, at the very least, a newer type, more beset by anxieties and insecurities, and more tightly surrounded by those who equated loyalty with fear, self-interest and blind obedience. This ground-breaking book also demonstrates that Henry VIII’s priorities were always primarily martial rather than marital, and accepts neither the necessity of his all-consuming quest for a male heir nor his need ultimately to sever ties with Rome. As the story unfolds, Henry’s predicaments prove largely of his own making, the paths he chooses neither the only nor the best available. For Henry VIII was not only a bad man, but also a bad ruler who failed to achieve his aims and blighted the reigns of his two immediate successors.Five hundred years after he ascended the throne, the reputation of England’s best known king is being rehabilitated and subtly sanitized. Yet Tudor historian John Matusiak paints a colourful and absorbingly intimate portrait of a man wholly unfit for power.
