Book excerpt: Intriguing insight into the minds of two exceptional men whose contribution to our understanding of 17th-century England is incalculable. SPECTATOR Pepys and Evelyn first came to know each other during the Second Dutch War (1664-7). As the plague raged in the London they loved, they were both preoccupied with the business of casualties from the war, Pepys as Clerk of the Acts, and Evelyn as a Commissioner for Sick and Wounded Seamen and Prisoners of War. Nearly forty years later they were still corresponding, exchanging details of remedies for the afflictions of old age. Their friendship, and their relations with others, as recorded in their famous diaries and letters, provide an exceptional opportunity to witness life at the heart of Restoration England. This book includes every letter which could be located (some of which have been lost for more than a hundred years), and the complete text of each has been newly transcribed and fully annotated. Evelyn and Pepys are revealed in fresh dimensions as many details of their lives and friendship emerge which go unmentioned, or are barely alluded to, in the diaries. GUY DE LA BEDOYERE, historian, archaeologist and broadcaster, has also published an edition of Evelyn's Diary and a collection of pieces by Evelyn, The Writings of John Evelyn.

Download or read book The Tangier Papers of Samuel Pepys written by Edwin Chappell and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-14 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1683 Samuel Pepys accompanied George Legge, Lord Dartmouth, to Tangier as his secretary. During the voyage Pepys kept another brief diary and miscellaneous notes which contain valuable information about the navy. He recorded his concerns, as well as the views of the sea officers and others with him. Richard Leake, master gunner, was criticised by Pepys for not being able to hit the side of the target, and for not being able to get the charges correct to blow up the forts. He recorded that Captain David Lloyd, a sea officer, was also a painter with a good reputation. Pepys records his views about the merits of gentleman captains and their behaviour compared to ‘tarpaulin captains’. He also collected in these Papers every story he could, about the alleged immorality and corruptness of Arthur Herbert, the commander-in-chief of the English Mediterranean fleet, in order to discredit him with the king. Herbert had, in fact, returned to England before Pepys had arrived in Tangier. The source of the stories about Herbert’s behaviour, in the Tangier Papers, came from old friends of Pepys and Herbert’s enemies, and are not to be trusted, or accepted as a true account of what Herbert achieved; this can only be traced through Herbert’s own letters and the unpublished admiralty papers in the Public Record Office.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents some of the most exciting incidents from the diary of Samuel Pepys concerning his life and the manners of his time. Pepys was an English diarist and naval administrator. He acted as administrator of the navy of England and a Member of Parliament. Pepys is most famous for keeping a diary for a decade when he was young. Since one cannot separate the life of Pepys from the period he lived in, this work acts as a history of 16th century England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1933, this book presents the content of 56 shorthand, or partly shorthand, letters by Samuel Pepys, transcribed in full and edited by Edwin Chappell. The letters were derived from a volume entitled S. Pepys' Official Correspondence 1662-1679, which came into the possession of the National Maritime Museum in 1931, having been sold at auction by the Pepys-Cockerell family along with four other volumes of hitherto privately owned letters. The period covered is roughly that of the Second Dutch War, with the first letter dated as 20th September 1664 and the last 30th March 1668. Detailed notes are incorporated throughout and a list of works quoted is also included. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the correspondence of Pepys and British history.

Book excerpt: Pepys's diary has made him a literary celebrity. In his own time he was known as the chief naval official under Charles II and James II and this aspect of the diarist's life has not received the attention it deserves from his modern biographers. Charles Knighton, a Pepys scholar with a particular interest in naval history, reveals the full extent of Pepys's achievements in creating a modern navy which was both permanent and professional.
