Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Pontificate of Gregory the Seventh Narran'ons and anecdotes such as this, which constantly assailed me from persons of veracity, led me, on reflection, to imagine that the descendants of the ancient Romans could never have been sub dued to the dominion of priests, otherwise than by a continued series of violence and fraud through many ages; and that among them some spirit must still e ist who viewed with indignation the temporal sovereignty of the church, and pitied the debasement of his countrymen, and the religious thraldom in which they were held. In pursuing this train of ideas, by chance there fell into my hands a ms. Still more recent than that of Lam berti, -the production of a man of learning who had lately died, and whose effects were sold by his executors. On the perusal of this ms., it appeared to me to elucidate a period of singular interest, and of no less singular obscurity; and I ventured to hope that I might render a service to literature and to mankind, by adapting it, with some suppressions and alterations, to publication in my native tongue. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Pontificate of Gregory the Seventh, Vol. 1 of 2 With regard to the agents in our English Reforma tion, it forms, of a surety, an item by no means unimportant in the amount of our obligation to them, that they did not that which we seem habitually to acknowledge that they did, and even to laud them for doing. They did not attempt to found a new Church - a word which should hardly be Spoken. They did not, tempted as they were to do so, remove their countrymen from those limits of the holy Church Catholic which the Protestants of various parts of Europe were unhappily led, by a seeming necessity, to overstep. The Anglican Church, as left by her Reformers, continued in the enjoyment of her old constitution, under the guidance of her old line of consecrated governors; as also, though these are minor points, in the possession of most of her old endowments, and in the enjoyment of her old privileges in the state. She did not alter a single letter of the Creeds which had ever formed the summaries of her Faith. She disclaimed, in the strongest terms, all intention of either separating herself from the other members of the Church Catholic, or discarding that Church's ao credited and authoritative teaching. She continued to follow, as her guides in the interpretation of Scripture, the ancient Fathers and catholic Bishops honouring in-them the general voice of_ primitive antiquity, and revering, as the clearest accents of that voice, those four general Councils, which her ancient founder or remodeller, Gregory the Great, had taught her to consider as pre-eminently the landmarks of catholic belief 2. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Hildebrand: Pope Gregory VII With Henry III the Empire attained its maximum of power, its maximum of influence upon the Roman See. In Rome no German sovereign had ever been so absolute. He became hereditary Patrician, and wore constantly the circlet of gold and the green mantle which were the badges of that office, seeming, as one might think, to find in it some further authority than that which the Imperial name conferred. To Henry was granted the nomination of the Pope, and by his instrumentality German after German succeeded to the Papacy, at the bidding of a ruler so powerful, so severe, and so pious. A mere chance checked the course of Imperial patronage. The great Emperor died suddenly in 1056, leaving as his successor his son, a mere child, the unfortunate Henry IV. Under the line of German popes the Papacy learned to borrow the strength of the Imperial system under which it had grown to power. So strengthened, the Papacy aimed at independence. A critical step was taken by entrusting the Papal election 'to the cardinal-bishops, priests and deacons, which aimed a blow at Imperial interference. Politically, an alliance with the Norman settlers in Southern Italy enabled the popes to count upon a counter-balance to the Imperial power. The Papacy slowly prepared to assert its independence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Gregory the Seventh, Vol. 2 of 2: Sketch of the History of the Papacy to the Eleventh Century At the same time he sought to disunite the principal families of that martial province itself, and to win over by gifts and promises some of the chiefs who had taken part in the late revolt. As the most considerable of these Saxon families possessed among them fiefs in Henry's hereditary kingdom, they either in reality or in appearance took separate sides, so as not to run the risk of losing all their property thus some of the sons of brothers Of the same house ranged themselves on the king's side, while the rest remained faithful to what they called the rights and freedom Of their country. Henry succeeded, moreover, by his presents and prodigal promises, in attaching to his cause many of those bishops whose authority had most powerfully aided the Saxons in the beginning Of their revolt. The rumour of the king's activity, and of the defection of many of the chiefs, began to be noised abroad in the country. The nobility, divided among themselves, lost heart. Sinister predictions were spread among the people: it was reported that in many of the churches the image Of Christ had been found covered with a cold sweat, that the Bishop of Magdeburg, while cele bratin g mass, had seen the host drop down to the bottom Of the chalice, in the likeness of flesh, and that a priest in his diocese had also found blood in the cup instead of wine.
