Excerpt: ...pleased myself with the design, without determining whether I was ever able to undertake it; not but that the difficulty of launching my boat came often into my head; but I put a stop to my own inquiries into it by this foolish answer, which I gave myself; Let me first make it, I will warrant I will find some way or other to get it along, when it is done. This was a most preposterous method; but the eagerness of my fancy prevailed, and to work I went, and felled a cedar tree: I question much whether Solomon ever had such an one for the building the temple of Jerusalem; it was five feet ten inches diameter at the lower part next the stump, and four feet eleven inches diameter at the end of twenty-two feet, after which it lessened for a while, and then parted into branches. It was not without infinite labour that I felled this tree; I was twenty days hacking and hewing at it at the bottom; I was fourteen more getting tlie branches and limbs, and the vast spreading head of it cut off, which I hacked and hewed through with my axe and hatchet, with inexpressible labour; after this it cost me a month to shape it, and dub it to a proportion, and to something like the bottom of a boat, that it might swim upright as it ought to do. It cost me near three months more to clear the inside, and work it out so as to make an exact boat of it: this I did indeed without fire, by mere mallet and chissel, and by the dint of hard labour; till I had brought it to be a very handsome periagua, and big enough to have carried six-andtwenty men, and consequently big enough to have carried me and all my cargo. When I had gone through this work, I was extremely delighted with it: the boat was really much bigger than I ever saw a canoe or periagua, that was made of one tree, ..

Book excerpt: Set in the 17th century, Robinson Crusoe follows the eponymous Robinson Crusoe as he leaves home to make his fortune. After a series of misadventures in Africa, Crusoe is shipwrecked on a desert island for 28 years, forming much of the adventure. Crusoe's life on the island, his encounter with cannibals, and his rescue of shipwrecked Spaniards are highlights of the story. In The further adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Crusoe and Man Friday journey to Europe, then on a trading adventure to India and China. Rather than returning to Europe by ship, Crusoe's last great adventure is an overland journey across China and Siberia. Daniel Defoe (c.1659-1731) was an English writer credited with publishing the first English-language novel, ROBINSON CRUSOE. Born Daniel Foe, he wrote more than 500 works during his life, including novels and political works, and in a variety of subjects.

Book excerpt: I was born in the year 1632, in the city of York, of a good family, though not of that country, my father being a foreigner of Bremen, who settled first at Hull: he got a good estate by merchandise, and leaving off his trade, lived afterwards at York; from whence he had married my mother, whose relations were named Robinson, a very good family in that country, and from whom I was called Robinson Kreutznaer; but, by the usual corruption of words in England, we are now called, nay we call our-selves, and write, our name Crusoe; and so my compan-ions always called me.

Book The Robinson Crusoe Trilogy

Download or read book The Robinson Crusoe Trilogy written by Daniel Dafoe and published by . This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The iconic Robinson Crusoe and the real life events that inspired his story Almost everyone has heard of the story of Robinson Crusoe and his man Friday, whether they have actually read Defoe's book or not. Crusoe has been the subject of numerous films, television series and dramatisations. People might not, however, be aware that as a result of the success of the original book, Crusoe's fictional life and adventures became a trilogy. All three books appear in this unique Leonaur edition and readers can expect a gratifying helping of dark deeds at sea, marooning, fights for survival, battles with cannibals and many other exciting escapades. The final Defoe text has been carefully edited by Leonaur to remove ligatures and other archaic characters to make the it more readable and enjoyable for modern readers. Many who know of Crusoe's fictional adventures are aware that they were based on the real-life experiences of Alexander Selkirk. There have been several versions of his story published, but we have chosen the one we believe is the fullest and most accurate to include here to give readers an understanding of the reality that inspired Robinson Crusoe's fame. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.
