Book The Crimean War

  • Author : Andrew Lambert
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-03-16
  • ISBN : 1317037006
  • Pages : 397 pages

Download or read book The Crimean War written by Andrew Lambert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to every other book about the conflict Andrew Lambert's ground-breaking study The Crimean War: British Grand Strategy against Russia, 1853-1856 is neither an operational history of the armies in the Crimea, nor a study of the diplomacy of the conflict. The core concern is with grand strategy, the development and implementation of national policy and strategy. The key concepts are strategic, derived from the works of Carl von Clausewitz and Sir Julian Corbett, and the main focus is on naval, not military operations. This original approach rejected the 'Continentalist' orthodoxy that dominated contemporary writing about the history of war, reflecting an era when British security policy was dominated by Inner German Frontier, the British Army of the Rhine and Air Force Germany. Originally published in 1990 the book appeared just as the Cold War ended; the strategic landscape for Britain began shifting away from the continent, and new commitments were emerging that heralded a return to maritime strategy, as adumbrated in the defence policy papers of the 1990s. With a new introduction that contextualises the 1990 text and situates it in the developing historiography of the Crimean War the new edition makes this essential book available to a new generation of scholars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would it mean to be 'conservative' in Britain before such terminology was even used? This 1993 book confronts these questions in discussing an evolving right-wing mentalité.

Book Catholicism Identity and Politics in the Age of Enlightenment

Download or read book Catholicism Identity and Politics in the Age of Enlightenment written by Alexander Lock and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2016 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the changing aspirations, attitudes and identities of English Catholics in the late eighteenth century This book explores the changing aspirations, attitudes and identities of English Catholics in the late eighteenth century, a period which marked a critical moment of transition in their spiritual, political and intellectual culture. It is based on the experiences of the English Catholic baronet, Grand Tourist and politician Sir Thomas Gascoigne (1745-1810). Gascoigne was born on the Continent into a devout Catholic family based in Yorkshire; however, following an unusual Continental upbringing and extensive series of Grand Tours to the courts of Catholic Europe, he would abjure his faith for a seat in Parliament. Throughout his life, he was an important advocate of agricultural reform, a considerable coal owner interested in mining engineering, as well as a keen developer of spa culture. By examining the experiences of Gascoigne and his milieu, this book explores English Catholic attitudes towards continental Catholicism, the influence of the European Enlightenment upon their education and outlook, and how this affected their Christianity, their estates and their conception of national identity. It demonstrates how increased toleration entailed a gradual rejection amongst English Catholics of a pious separatism for a more ecumenical and, ultimately, Enlightened approach to religion. Although this risked the loss of English Catholics to Anglicanism, many - like Gascoigne - remained crypto-Catholic in sympathy. They adapted their faith to the Enlightenment and regarded it as a matter of personal conviction and private choice. ALEXANDER LOCK is Curator of Modern Historical Manuscripts at the British Library.

Book The Tenant League of Prince Edward Island 1864 1867

Download or read book The Tenant League of Prince Edward Island 1864 1867 written by Ian Ross Robertson and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical writing about the middle years of the 1860s in British North America has focused almost exclusively on the Confederation movement and the theme of nation-building. As a consequence, scholars have largely overlooked one of the most successful extra-parliamentary movements of common people in the history of North America, which flourished in Prince Edward Island during those very years. The Tenant League produced a highly compelling history, in that it played a decisive role in undermining the leasehold system of land tenure that Britain had imposed a century earlier. Through an exhaustive study of period documents, Ian Ross Robertson examines the origins, the modus operandi, and the impact of this organization. In doing so, he has illuminated a rich part of Canadian history.
