Book excerpt: Baroque composer George Frideric Handel easily ranks among the world's greatest composers. The first edition of this research guide on Handel appeared in 1988; since that time a great deal of scholarly work has been published on Handel and related areas, including the discovery of a hitherto unknown work. New general resources such as the New Grove Dictionary of Opera (1992), electronic resources such as the RISM libretto catalogue online, and the study of Handel's continuing popularity as evidenced by the new Handel House Museum in London and Handel practice around the world (e.g., Messiah and millennium celebrations in Tonga, singalong Messiahs etc.) are incorporated into this revised edition of the Handel guide.

Book George Frideric Handel A Life with Friends

Download or read book George Frideric Handel A Life with Friends written by Ellen T. Harris and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his lifetime, the sounds of Handel’s music reached from court to theater, echoed in cathedrals, and filled crowded taverns, but the man himself—known to most as the composer of Messiah—is a bit of a mystery. Though he took meticulous care of his musical manuscripts and even provided for their preservation on his death, very little of an intimate nature survives. One document—Handel’s will—offers us a narrow window into his personal life. In it, he remembers not only family and close colleagues but also neighborhood friends. In search of the private man behind the public figure, Ellen T. Harris has spent years tracking down the letters, diaries, personal accounts, legal cases, and other documents connected to these bequests. The result is a tightly woven tapestry of London in the first half of the eighteenth century, one that interlaces vibrant descriptions of Handel’s music with stories of loyalty, cunning, and betrayal. With this wholly new approach, Harris has achieved something greater than biography. Layering the interconnecting stories of Handel’s friends like the subjects and countersubjects of a fugue, Harris introduces us to an ambitious, shrewd, generous, brilliant, and flawed man, hiding in full view behind his public persona.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The historical record has given us very few real letters written by or to the composer George Frideric Handel. The Handel Letters seeks to amend this oversight, though admittedly n the realm of ficiton. This work presents an ethnographic research perspective, a fictional set of characters, and some meaningful encounters as a focus group meets to examine some putative letters written to Handel. Wealthy American mining widow, Forella Wainwright, has her own unusual reason for seeking out any previously unknown information on the life of Handel. Her query in a London newspaper unearths a packet of letters written to Handel over the course of nearly fifty years. She brings together a seminar of ten people who meet over many months to discuss the letters and consider what lessons these missives and some digging into biographies and videos about Handel may hold for them and others living in the twenty-first century. The seminar becomes a collective review of Handel's music, his times, and a number of social and philosophical issues still trailing from Handel's full yet enigmatic life."--Back cover.

Book Handel in London

Download or read book Handel in London written by Jane Glover and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1712, a young German composer followed his princely master to London and would remain there for the rest of his life. That master would become King George II and the composer was George Freidrich Handel. Handel, then still only twenty-seven and largely self-taught, would be at the heart of music activity in London for the next four decades, composing masterpiece after masterpiece, whether the glorious coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest, operas such as Rinaldo and Alcina or the great oratorios, culminating, of course, in Messiah. Here, Jane Glover, who has conducted Handel’s work in opera houses and concert halls throughout the world, draws on her profound understanding of music and musicians to tell Handel’s story. It is a story of music-making and musicianship, but also of courts and cabals of theatrical rivalries and of eighteenth-century society. It is also, of course the story of some of the most remarkable music ever written, music that has been played and sung, and loved, in this country—and throughout the world—for three hundred years.

Book Handel s Messiah

  • Author : Amanda Babington
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2024-06-07
  • ISBN : 1040052053
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book Handel s Messiah written by Amanda Babington and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-06-07 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The soundtrack of the Christmas season for many music lovers, Messiah is performed annually by choral societies across the world. And so, perhaps unsurprisingly, many aspects of it have been explored by scholars over the years. The work is the subject of several listeners’ guides and there are a number of books and articles of various lengths that describe the biographical circumstances of the work’s formation and details of its many performances, many including lists of singers for each performance (an area that has itself spawned a whole field of research). There has been no extensive study of the creative process of Messiah, however, since 1969. This book seeks to redress this imbalance by providing a thorough investigation of the work’s creative process. Beginning with the creative process of the libretto, it examines the earliest sketches, Handel’s use of pre-existent material, alterations made to the autograph score, and the latest versions of movements. Each stage of composition is examined via primary source material, with particular reference to the autograph score and conducting score. Each chapter is formed as a case study and contains related discussion points for use in teaching or study settings.
