Book Bilingual Higher Education in the Legal Context

Download or read book Bilingual Higher Education in the Legal Context written by Xabier Arzoz and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2012-02-17 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to complex questions of building and developing legal education in more than one language, through two state languages (French and Dutch in Belgium, German and French in Switzerland, English and French in Canada, Finnish and Swedish in Finland) and/or through the medium of minority or lesser used languages (Basque, Galician, Catalan, Welsh, Romanian). Some states have a long and well-established tradition of bilingual legal education; others have only recently started to develop a legal education system through non-dominant languages; finally, in some other cases only partial bilingual legal education obtains, rather than a fuller model. The volume purports to examine best practices and to draw useful lessons from the experiences of other bilingual societies.

Book excerpt: This regional dossier aims to provide concise, descriptive information and basic educational statistics about minority language education in a specific region of the European Union--the Basque country of northern Spain. Aspects that are addressed include features of the education system, recent educational policies, main actors, legal arrangements, and support structures, as well as quantitative aspects, such as the number of schools, teachers, pupils, and financial investments. This kind of information can serve several purposes and can be relevant for policymakers, researchers, teachers, students, and journalists. They can also use this Regional dossier as a first orientation towards further research or as a source of ideas for improving educational provisions in their own region. The subject of this dossier is Basque or "euskara," a non-Indo-European isolate language. The area where Basque has traditionally been spoken is called "Euskal Herria," the Basque Country. Since the late nineteenth century this name has been applied to an area comprising seven historical provinces: four in Spain (Araba/Alava, Bizkaia/Vizcaya (in English, Biscay), Gipuzkoa/Guipuzcoa and Nafarroa/Navarra (in English, Navarre)) sometimes collectively called "Hegoalde," the southern Basque Country, and three in France (Lapurdi/Labourd, Nafarroa Beherea/Basse Navarre and Zuberoa/Soule), collectively "Iparralde," the North Basque Country. This dossier discusses the situation in the southern or peninsular Basque Country. "Hegoalde" occupies about 17,800 km in northern Spain on the Bay of Biscay. A separate dossier discusses the situation of Basque in education in the French or continental part of the Basque Country ("The Basque language in education in France, Mercator-Education, 1998"). a glossary is included. Book Minority Languages and Multilingual Education

Download or read book Minority Languages and Multilingual Education written by Durk Gorter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-04 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents research on the situation minority language schoolchildren face when they need to learn languages of international communication, in particular English. The book takes minority languages as a starting point and it bridges local and global perspectives in the analysis of multilingual education contexts. It examines the interaction of minority languages and cultures, majority languages and lingua franca-s in a variety of settings across different regions and countries on all continents. Even though all chapters in this book involve minority languages, the issues discussed are relevant to any context in which more than language is used in education. The book reveals challenges and opportunities of multilingual education by discussing issues such as Northern and Southern concepts, language education policies, language diversity, interethnic understanding, multimodal language practices, power, conflict, identity and prestige, among many others. “This is the volume that finally accounts for multilingual education from a truly multilingual perspective by involving proposals and research from a variety of multilingual speech communities in the world. The (linguistically) rich Ethiopia and Mexico can teach the poor Europe and other Northern countries about multilingual education. CLIL promoters may learn from Finnish Sámi and Canadian Innu and Mi’gmaq indigenous communities as well as from Basque results. Speakers and teachers of minority and international languages will certainly be glad to hear the news. There is no need for a monolingual bias or tunnel vision in acquiring English in non-English speaking communities. This volume includes new challenging pedagogical perspectives while pointing to interesting conclusions for worldwide educational authorities”. Book Cultural and Linguistic Minorities in the Russian Federation and the European Union

Download or read book Cultural and Linguistic Minorities in the Russian Federation and the European Union written by Heiko F. Marten and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive volume to compare the sociolinguistic situations of minorities in Russia and in Western Europe. As such, it provides insight into language policies, the ethnolinguistic vitality and the struggle for reversal of language shift, language revitalization and empowerment of minorities in Russia and the European Union. The volume shows that, even though largely unknown to a broader English-reading audience, the linguistic composition of Russia is by no means less diverse than multilingualism in the EU. It is therefore a valuable introduction into the historical backgrounds and current linguistic, social and legal affairs with regard to Russia’s manifold ethnic and linguistic minorities, mirrored on the discussion of recent issues in a number of well-known Western European minority situations.

Book Language Rights and the Law in the European Union

Download or read book Language Rights and the Law in the European Union written by Eduardo D. Faingold and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the language policies relating to linguistic rights in European Union law and in the constitutions and legal statutes of some European Union member states. In recent years, the European Union has seen an increase in claims for language recognition by minority groups representing a considerable population (such as Catalan in Spain and Welsh in the UK). Additionally, there is a developing situation surrounding the official use of English within the European Union in the aftermath of the Brexit vote. In light of these two contexts, this book focuses on the degree of legal protection afforded to linguistic groups in the European Union. It will be of interest to students and scholars of language policy, EU law, minority languages and sociolinguistics.

Book L2 Writing Beyond English

Download or read book L2 Writing Beyond English written by Nur Yiğitoğlu Aptoula and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2019-04-10 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of what we know about writing in a second or foreign language (L2) is based on conclusions drawn from research on L2 writing in English. However, a significant quantity of L2 writing and writing instruction takes place in languages other than English and so there is a need for studies that look beyond English. The chapters in this book focus on languages other than English and investigate curricular issues, multiple languages in contact/conflict in L2 writing instruction and student attitudes toward pedagogical practices. The collection as a whole makes a valuable contribution to the study of L2 writing, and it will also prove an essential resource for instructors of second and foreign language writing.
