Book The Left Handed Policeman

Download or read book The Left Handed Policeman written by Robert Westbrook and published by Speaking Volumes. This book was released on with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Westbrook Author of the Howard Moon Deer Mysteries "The battle of wits and nerves that unfolds in this expertly paced novel as Nicky struggles to snare the serial killer, keep his job, and juggle an increasingly complex love life make for compelling reading . . . In Nicky Rachmaninoff [Robert Westbrook has] created one of the most engaging new detective heroes since Joseph Wambaugh got philosophical. About the only thing that cushions the disappointment of coming to the end of this page-turner is the knowledge that there's a sequel in the works." —Wall Street Journal Murder in Beverly Hills A killer is on the loose in Beverly Hills. Late at night, as moguls, starlets, actors, and rock stars head home after a night on the town, a Corvette pulls up beside a Rolls-Royce at a traffic light. A gun goes off—and another of Hollywood's elite lies dead. Beverly Hills cowers in terror. It's up to Police Lt. Nicky Rachmaninoff—reluctant cop, ex-hippie, divorced father, and the meanest left-handed jazz pianist in all L.A.—to trap the murderer before he dispatches all of Southern California's rich and famous. It's an assignment Nicky is reluctant to take on: He'd rather play the piano, worry about his love life, or gaze at the stars above his Hollywood Hills bungalow than search out a serial killer. Nicky's ex-wife, the beautiful blond star of TV's "Cassie and the Cop," suddenly wants Nicky back. But Nicky finds himself caught up with the lovely and well-heeled widow of one of the murder victims—even as he thinks he really does love his ex-wife. But someone else loves "Cassie," too. His name is Lawrence Ferguson and he is a nobody. After being diagnosed as terminally ill, Lawrence quits his job, withdraws his life savings, moves to the Beverly Hills Hotel . . . and buys himself a Corvette. And Lawrence has decided to exercise his final fantasy on the woman whose television image he has long worshiped. Can Nicky stop him in time? The Left-Handed Policeman is a gripping novel of life—and death—among the big names and the nameless of Beverly Hills. Novelist Robert Westbrook—himself the son of a famous Hollywood personality—explores the boulevards and back alleys, the myths and realities, of the greatest, most deadly dream factory of all: Hollywood.

Book excerpt: Can Hollywood's rich and famous find happiness in the Third World—or will they find only murder? That's the question that blues-playing police lieutenant Nicky Rachmaninoff must answer in Robert Westbrook's third book in The Left-Handed Policeman series, Lady Left. Having exposed the Hollywood dream machine and the world of rock and roll in his previous two mysteries, Robert Westbrook now gives the same delightfully satirical treatment to another hot topic on the Hollywood scene: fashionable leftist politics. Nicky Rachmaninoff must take on Tinsel Town's liberal elite as it involves itself in a wild scheme to make the hemisphere safe for romance, revolution, and beautiful people everywhere. A reluctant Nicky is persuaded to "vacation" in Nicaragua by his loving ex-wife, Susan Merril, who is determined to shed her glamour-girl image by becoming a leftist activist. The vacation goes wrong from the start: Nicky's feisty Beverly Hills daughter, fourteen-year-old Tanya, falls madly in love with a Nicaraguan soldier; and a far-left Hollywood professor, Cory Heard, introduces Nicky to a complicated scam that maybe—just maybe—is intended to bring the Sandinistas hack into power. But when Cory Heard is apparently murdered at the site of the late dictator Somoza’s buried treasure, Nicky must put down his margarita in favor of a gun and mineral water, as he uncovers a trail that leads him back to Beverly Hills—and into the arms of Cory's activist wife, the film superstar Katherine Hall. She is dark, passionate, devious, and out for Nicky, one way or another; she is the alluring and dangerous Lady Left. Nothing in Hollywood or the Third World is what it seems. From the jungles of Nicaragua to the elegant homes of Beverly Hills and the palatial desert estates of Palm Springs, Lady Left is a darkly comic, intricate, and suspenseful story of what happens when glamour, murder, and politics mix.

Download or read book Nostalgia Kills written by Robert Westbrook and published by Speaking Volumes. This book was released on with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nostalgia Kills A Left-Handed Policeman Mystery What if the greatest American rock star of the sixties, drowned in his bathtub seventeen years ago, did not accidentally die of a drug overdose but was murdered? Now, a new murder in Beverly Hills leaves blues-playing police lieutenant Nicky Rachmaninoff haunted by what really happened. The provocative and murderously profitable world of California rock is the setting for Nostalgia Kills by Robert Westbrook, author of The Left-Handed Policeman. After top video-jockey Jay Jeffries is found murdered and mutilated in his Beverly Hills mansion, Nicky Rachmaninoff finds himself in the middle of a bloody scandal. Jeffries was a member of the radical sixties rock group The Perceptions, whose lead singer Billy Lion died mysteriously in Rome at the height of his fame. Someone is out to kill all the surviving band members, now successful music promoters at The Rock Channel. Nicky's investigation is complicated by his precocious young daughter, Tanya, and by an entanglement with his ex-wife, TV star Susan Merril. But he uncovers a trail of murder that leads him to music broadcast studios, a bordello, a Malibu beach house, a sailboat off the coast of Hawaii, and ultimately—in a scene of mayhem and potential murder—the Grammy Awards. Everyone seems to want The Perceptions dead, including the band members themselves: lecherous guitarist Rick Elsmore, scheming businessman Bo Daniels, and the bitterly betrayed Donny Meredith. Others with stakes in the outcome include mobster Bushy di Sutro; Susan's husband, Frank Fee, a famous actor; nymphet VJ Unity Sphere; a punk rock music group called Public Telephone; groupie/housemaid Nancy Normal; and a mysterious, deadly voice that calls itself The Ghost of Rock and Roll. The sixties meet the eighties in Nostalgia Kills, as sixties veteran Nicky Rachmaninoff races against time to rescue not just The Perceptions but rock and roll, past and present, in this colorful, funny, and gripping story of murder. "IF YOU HAVEN'T GOT TIME TO VISIT LOS ANGELES COUNTY'S TONIEST CITY, WESTBROOK'S NOVEL IS THE NEXT BEST THING. Westbrook, the son of former Hollywood gossip columnist Sheilah Graham knows the police and he know's Southern California, from the back alleys of Beverly Hills to the Salton Sea." —Philadelphia Inquirer

Book excerpt: "[The] weird, beautiful, unapologetically apocalyptic Last Policeman trilogy is one of my favorite mystery series."—John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns Winner of the 2013 Edgar® Award Winner for Best Paperback Original! What’s the point in solving murders if we’re all going to die soon, anyway? Detective Hank Palace has faced this question ever since asteroid 2011GV1 hovered into view. There’s no chance left. No hope. Just six precious months until impact. The Last Policeman presents a fascinating portrait of a pre-apocalyptic United States. The economy spirals downward while crops rot in the fields. Churches and synagogues are packed. People all over the world are walking off the job—but not Hank Palace. He’s investigating a death by hanging in a city that sees a dozen suicides every week—except this one feels suspicious, and Palace is the only cop who cares. The first in a trilogy, The Last Policeman offers a mystery set on the brink of an apocalypse. As Palace’s investigation plays out under the shadow of 2011GV1, we’re confronted by hard questions way beyond “whodunit.” What basis does civilization rest upon? What is life worth? What would any of us do, what would we really do, if our days were numbered? Ebook contains an excerpt from the anticipated second book in the trilogy, Countdown City.

Book Doctor Guilt

Download or read book Doctor Guilt written by Everett Winslow Lovrien and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brent admired the chimpanzee he sketched at the zoo. He regarded the animal as contemplative. He was unaware that similar animals in the wilds of Africa were the source of a virus that would lead to his death from AIDS. Brent became infected with HIV from the medicine he infused to treat his hemophilia. At six months of age, his parents were alarmed when they discovered bruises on his chest which led to the discovery of hemophilia. From that moment forward, he received frequent intravenous infusions of concentrate to treat recurrent bleeding episodes. Infusions of the medicine relieved pain and suffering from bleeding. His life seemed normal. Unexpectedly, Brent's life changed after the discovery of HIV contamination of the medicine. The medicine was manufactured from the plasma of paid blood donors. Unbeknownst to Brent, the plasma was polluted with HIV. The SIV in chimpanzees changed to become HIV in humans. But the chimpanzees were not the cause of the transfer of SIV in animals to HIV in humans. The change from SIV in animals to HIV in humans was the result of human activity. The change came about with the production of the hepatitis B vaccine. Who was responsible for the pollution of the hemophilia medicine with HIV and hepatitis viruses? Was Brent's death preventable?

Book The Real Policeman

Download or read book The Real Policeman written by Ron Owens and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-04-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's raw, profane, offensive, bizarre. It's not politically correct or warm and fuzzy. It's real. How did police officers do their jobs four decades ago during some of the nation's most turbulent and violent times? These aren't one-dimensional Hollywood characters. They're society's soldiers, real people cut from whole cloth. They try to help when they can, bristle when they're insulted, retaliate when they're attacked, bleed when they're injured, laugh when they're amused (sometimes inappropriately) and get ready for the next shift. Without bulletproof vests, portable radios and other equipment considered essential today, often riding alone, they developed a "One riot-one ranger" mentality by necessity. This book will put you beside some of them, sometimes inside their heads-om radio calls, both mundane and life-threatening, in interrogations, in hostage situations, undercover arrests, investigating burglaries, robberies, rapes and murders. These are the type of stories cops share with each other-stories of comedy, tragedy, chaos and the endless uniqueness of human behavior. These are some of the experiences that make them what they are, for better and worse. The experiences that forever change them, that set them apart from the rest of us, that make them a brotherhood closer than most brothers.

Book excerpt: “A genre-defying blend of crime writing and science fiction.”—Alexandra Alter, The New York Times Detective Hank Palace returns in the second in the speculative mystery trilogy set on the brink of the apocalypse. There are just 77 days before a deadly asteroid collides with Earth, and Detective Palace is out of a job. With the Concord police force operating under the auspices of the U.S. Justice Department, Hank's days of solving crimes are over...until a woman from his past begs for help finding her missing husband. Brett Cavatone disappeared without a trace—an easy feat in a world with no phones, no cars, and no way to tell whether someone’s gone “bucket list” or just gone. With society falling to shambles, Hank pieces together what few clues he can, on a search that leads him from a college-campus-turned-anarchist-encampment to a crumbling coastal landscape where anti-immigrant militia fend off “impact zone” refugees. Countdown City presents another fascinating mystery set on brink of an apocalypse--and once again, Hank Palace confronts questions way beyond "whodunit." What do we as human beings owe to one another? And what does it mean to be civilized when civilization is collapsing all around you?

Book The Policeman s Daughter

Download or read book The Policeman s Daughter written by Trudy Nan Boyce and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From author Trudy Nan Boyce, whose police procedural debut was hailed as "authentic" (NYTBR) and "exceptional" (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel), returns with a stunning prequel to the Detective Salt series, the story behind the case that earned Salt her promotion to homicide. At the beginning of her career, Sarah "Salt" Alt was a beat cop in Atlanta's poorest, most violent housing project, The Homes. It is here that she meets the cast of misfits and criminals that will have a profound impact on her later cases: Man Man, the leader of the local gang on his way to better places; street dealer Lil D and his family; and Sister Connelly, old and observant, the matriarch of the neighborhood. A lone patrolwoman, Salt's closest lifeline is her friend and colleague Pepper, on his own beat nearby. And when a murder in The Homes brings detectives to the scene, Salt draws closer to Detective Wills, initiating a romance complicated by their positions on the force. When Salt is shot and sustains a head injury during a routine traffic stop, the resulting visions begin leading her toward answers in the case that makes her career. This is the tale of a woman who solves crimes through a combination of keen observation, grunt work, and pure gut instinct; this is the making of Detective Salt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Harvard-trained sociologist Peter Moskos left the classroom to become a cop in Baltimore's Eastern District, he was thrust deep into police culture and the ways of the street--the nerve-rattling patrols, the thriving drug corners, and a world of poverty and violence that outsiders never see. In Cop in the Hood, Moskos reveals the truths he learned on the midnight shift. Through Moskos's eyes, we see police academy graduates unprepared for the realities of the street, success measured by number of arrests, and the ultimate failure of the war on drugs. In addition to telling an explosive insider's story of what it is really like to be a police officer, he makes a passionate argument for drug legalization as the only realistic way to end drug violence--and let cops once again protect and serve. In a new afterword, Moskos describes the many benefits of foot patrol--or, as he calls it, "policing green."
