Download or read book American Dreams written by Williams College. Museum of Art and published by Hudson Hills. This book was released on 2001 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Williams College, in Williamstown, MA, has collected art since the mid-19th century. In this chronological journey through American art in all media, each of 56 highlighted objects from the museum receives a mini-essay of several hundred words, signed by contributors who frequently are the acknowledged experts on particular artists or works. A full factual entry on each work appears at the back of the book, preceded by extremely brief summaries of the acquisitions histories of the overall collection's painting, drawing, sculpture, Williams portraits, prints, photographs, posters, and decorative arts. College alumni donated many items, including collections on Rube Goldberg, Thomas Nast, and the Prendergasts. This is not the definitive book on American art, but it is an excellent survey with many interesting objects not commonly reproduced. For art history collections. 64 colour & 65 b/w illustrations

Download or read book Esteban Vicente written by Elizabeth Frank and published by Hudson Hills. This book was released on 1995 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Esteban Vicente is the first book devoted to the life and work of the distinguished Spanish-born painter who, at age ninety-two, remains the only one of the original Abstract Expressionists still working at the peak of his powers. His luminous paintings and collages acknowledge the great Spanish tradition of Velazquez and Goya while simultaneously exploring the legacy of such modernist masters as Cezanne, Picasso, Mondrian, and Matisse. This magnificent volume reproduces all of Vicente's most important works from nearly a half century of constant evolution between cycles of austere painterly classicism and a passionate, explosive baroque. Oversize plates, including 84 in full color, present Vicente's paintings, collages, and drawings, capturing his rich, brilliant palette, elegant compositions, economy of means, and passionate clarity of feeling. Esteban Vicente is further enriched by extensive quotations from the artist's writings and interviews; rare documentary photographs; a chronology; lists of solo and group exhibitions and public collections; bibliography; and index. 89 colour & 48 b/w illustrations

Download or read book The Color of Being El Color del Ser written by Susie Kalil and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Bryan, Texas, and raised in Houston, Dorothy Hood won a scholarship to the Rhode Island School of Design in the early 1930s, then worked as a model in New York to earn money for classes at the Art Students League. On a whim, she drove a roadster to Mexico City with friends in 1941 and ended up staying for more than twenty years. Hood was front and center at the cultural, political, and social crossroads of Mexico and Latin America during a period of intense creative ferment. She developed close friendships with the exiled European intelligentsia and Latin American surrealists: artists, composers, poets, playwrights, and revolutionary writers. She married the Bolivian composer José María Velasco Maidana, and together they traveled all over the world. Once back in Houston, Hood produced epic paintings that evoked the psychic void of space: large-scale works evoking primordial seas, volcanic explosions, and the cosmos contained within the mind. The Color of Being / El Color del Ser establishes a vital connection among Texas, Latin America, New York, and Europe. It celebrates this important Modernist painter whose oeuvre is integral to the ongoing dialogue of abstraction by artists of the postwar period. Sponsored by the Art Museum of South Texas
