Smith, was among some of those who came in those early days. He was only a boy between fifteen and sixteen years of age. He, too, received the language in a remarkably short time, and retains it to a marked degree even to this day. It is music to those who understand the language to hear him speak. His pronunciation is so nearly per feet. The Lord constantly blessed the work of the Elders until at the time Brother. Cannon returned, in four years, there were upwards of four thousand members of the Church on the Islands, and the work has progressed from year to year. Missionaries have continued to come and return until many thou sands of this branch of the house of Israel have been led into the waters of baptism, and many thousands have had the Holy Priesthood conferred upon them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: January 14, 1904 If the young people were taught these things in the spirit thereof, and were induced by example and proper family government, in love, to practice them, no complaint would need be made about neglect of duty, and hoodlumism. But this cannot be done unless parents themselves are exemplary, and this, evidently, they are not always. There are idlers among them, also; they are not seeking earnestly the riches of eternity, but their eyes are full of greedi ness they Spend their time and thoughts upon material things. They do not pray; they are worldly in mind, in habits and actions. The incorrigibility of the children is due to their carelessness, and some day there will be a wakening, and parents will realize the fearful, awful fact, that the sins of their children are resting upon their heads. I wish my voice could be heard in every family in Zion. Lovingly, and yet as firmly as if my soul's salvation depended upon it, I would repeat to every father and mother the words of the Lord to Zion: These things ought not to be; and must be done away from among them; and a commandment I give unto them, that he that observeth not his prayers before the Lord in the season thereof, let him be had in remembrance before the judge of my people. These sayings are true and faithful; therefore transgress them not, neither take therefrom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Squires, writing from Crewe, under date of November 1st, 1904, tell of their finding a sister who had not seen nor heard an Elder for sixteen years. They write: This sister has great faith. On the occasion of Elders Smith and Smoot's first visit she had been suffering for a long time from neuralgia, so much that she could not rest at night. When the Elders had got fairly rested, she told them how she had suffered, and then requested them to lay hands on her that she might receive relief. She remembered that prominent feature of our faith since a girl. They complied with her request, with the result that she received instant and permanent relief. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: April 21, 1904 God bless you. May He pour out His Spirit upon His people and help them to be wise and prudent in their words and in their actions. We say to you, keep the laws of God, and you should honor and keep the constitutional laws of men. That is what we say. We say to you, pay your debts and get out of debt. Pay your obligations and free yourselves from the bondage of obligation, if you can, and as soon as you can. We say to you, protect your own faith by Godly lives. We say to you, do unto others as you would have them do unto you - in righteousness. We say to you, keep the faith delivered to the Saints in the latter day. We say to you, honor God in your lives; honor and love Christ, the Son of God, in your hearts; uphold in honor and maintain respect for the name of Joseph Smith, the Prophet of God, who was instrumental in laying the foundation of this great latter-day work. Do not turn away at every wind of doctrine or be swayed by the cunning and craftiness of men, whereby they lie in wait to de ceive. Know the truth for yourselves. Walk in the light as Christ is in the light, and you will have fellowship with Him, and then the blood of Jesus Christ will cleanse you from all sin. God bless you to this end is my humble prayer, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 63: June 13, 1901 If He said this must we not believe there are more than one and two Paul says there are various glories. There is one glory of the sun, and another of the moon, and another glory of the stars, for one star differs from another star in glory, so also is the resurrection of the dead. John tells us, in his revelation on the Island of Patmos: And I saw the dead small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened and the sea gave up the dead which was in it, and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them. Christianity would have believe that hell held its dead forever and ever. When Adam partook of the forbidden fruit his act banished mankind from the presence of the Father, and when Christ died He atoned for that sin, and every one, unconditionally, will stand before God and be judged for his own sins and not for Adam's transgression. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: April 28, 1904 And what were the peculiar teachings that were set forth by President, Apostle and Elder? The same Gospel teachings that were set forth by Jesus of Nazareth almost nineteen hundred years ago - a call to faith, repentance and baptism, an inspiration to purer thoughts, nobler deeds, a higher existence, a plea to live God-like lives here, that we may dwell with our Father when we are called to pass behind the veil. Men were urged to be honest, to be vir tuous, to be industrious, to be men in very deed, and this for their temporal as well as for their eternal salvation. They were taught to be humble, to be prayerful, to be forgiving; to gain for themselves a testimony as to the Gospel Of Christ and to live up to the light that the Holy Spirit sheds abroad in their hearts. In it all there was not one word Of bitterness, one word Of regret, one word of reproach. The Gospel that is preached in the tabernacle, in Salt Lake, is the same identical Gospel that is preached by the Mormon Elders on the street corners of our cities and in the cottages of the country, for the Gospel does not change with time or tide, with geographical clime or social condition. It is the same yesterday, to-day and forever. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: April 7, 1904 According to the latest statistics, we number souls, all told, in the Church, and most of these exist under the most unsatisfactory conditions. The continuous drain of emigration has depleted our ranks so much that it is barely possible to get a sufficient number of Saints together to formulate a good, healthy branch, if indeed it ever has been possible as the work of the Elder, coupled with the voice of God calling, has picked up souls here and there, often far from the railroad and almost always far from their neighbor Saints. At one time, not far gone, we were privileged to have a host of over five hundred Elders, and their energetic labors in new and old fields, left Saints in nearly every county in the south. Then, for some unseen reason, the numbers were cut down enormously, until now our scant two hundred can barely keep in touch with those already members of the Church. These are engaged in building up branches, and organizing Sunday schools and other organizations where convenient, in order to keep the Saints informed and not allow their zeal to subside. But, as we shall show, there is an abundance of other work being done by our Elders toward informing the ignorant about our precious truths. Our accurate statistics do not run farther back than six years, but during that time, there have been sent through our commissary department to the Elders for distribution and to enquiring investigators, the major part of the following editions of books gotten out by the mission: copies of the Voice of Warning; copies of Mr. Durant; Orson Pratt's Works; Ready References; Missionary Hymn Books copies of Apostle Cowley's Works, besides about copies of miscellaneous books, and the large number that are received continually from Salt Lake City. We have also disposed of copies of the Book of Mormon, which have however, not been printed under the direction of the mission. Fully tracts of different kinds have been published and disposed of in the mission. During the same number of years there have been about Elders laboring in the mission; the total number since the beginning of the official record in 1875, being It might be interesting to note that for three years of this time, when we had the largest average number of Elders and they were engaged mostly in breaking new ground, we sent out daily from one to four mail sacks full of mail, and that our postage stamp bill at the Chattanooga, Tennessee, post-offiice, averaged per month. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: March 31, 1904 There have been a number of converts made who have joined themselves to adjacent stakes of Zion of which there are eight within the mission borders. Some members who have been slack in their duties have been persuaded to renew their diligence in the work. Many girls, who have drifted away from the Church and have married outside of its pale, have been found and their children have been blessed and baptized. In this way alone the establishment of the mission has done much good. The mission work has been and is still growing and, though few converts are being made, many have become warm friends and defenders of the Mormon Elders. Hospitality is characteristic of the people and the Elders have suffered little or no hardship when left to their mercy. God has abundantly blessed His servants in this mission. Comparatively few are met who give credence to the many stories which are being circulated about the Church. One old gentleman said to the writer the other day, If some of these people who are doing so much talking would go to Utah and see for themselves, as I have done, they would return with the notion that the Mormons are a pretty good people. Referring to the Senator Smoot agitation, he continued, Petitions are no guide to be governed by. I could go out and in a few hours get fifty names to a petition to hang a man. Liberality of thought and expression is everywhere heard. The people are willing to allow all others their own peculiar mode of worship and show no desire to molest them in it. They are content with the religion of their fathers and do not give themselves to worrying about their neighbors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: April 30, 1903 He referred to the other point suggested by President Smith, the necessity of manual training. The fact that it is needful to call attention to this matter indicates that we are undergoing a change. The limits of our population are becoming more restricted. 'young men have to push out into new countries; and in order to do this, they must know something of the mechanical arts. The professions are already overcrowded. This is a day of organization. Everything is controlled by corporations. One of the questions for the Latter day Saints to answer is, what shall be the relation between those among us who practise the mechanical arts and trades, and the trade unions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: November 10, 1904 One of the essentials, the leading essential, is the proper appreciation of the doctrines of the Gospel of J esus Christ. There is that which will bring life, and joy, and happiness forever. You should not esteem it lightly, nor deny its messengers a hearing. They stand ready at your doors to teach it you, freely and without cost. Despise them not, nor spurn their message. Though its adoption may bring you some annoyance, in the final review of your life it will act as a well of living water springing up unto everlasting life. You may think that the Latter-day Saints have not a message worth your while; you have more important things. I tell you that to fail to hear them, to avoid or refuse entertaining them, and to neglect to listen to and obey the message which they bear, is precious opportunity lost, which, one day, in the final, the home review of the experiences of your life, will bring you sorrow and regret. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: May 26, 1904 Another question for Christians. A few years ago, a boy in his innocent years claimed to have walked and talked with God. If you look upon such a thing as absurd, why do you take so much means and lose so much breath over his doctrines and teachings? Why have you resorted to everything known to man to persecute his followers and to destroy his work? Why are those Mormons of western America giving you so much trouble, why are they seemingly worrying the world? If they are deluded, why do you not go among them as real Christians and say to them: Here, I am thy brother, and you are mine, Let us talk our ideas over and accept each others truths and good teachings. 'do you not know that Truth will always overcome Error when they meet face to face? If the Saints of the Last days have nothing good, then why is it that no people are more cleanly in their daily lives and habits; why is it that among all the states of the Union, Utah ranks third in educa tion? If they have nothing good, why is it that they accept the divine injunction, The glory of God is intelligence There must be a mistake somewhere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: September 22, 1904 From these passages I reasoned that all men were made of one blood; that God had determined the time before appointed, or when any portion of the human family should inhabit the earth; that He had also determined the bounds of their habitation, some having been born in Europe or Asia and some in America. God had given the plan of salvation to the inhabitants of the eastern continent, and as He is no respecter of persons, it was necessary that the same revelations should be given to His children on the American continent, who were cutoff from the rest of the world, and did not have access to the Jewish scriptures. Mr. Robinson appeared not to like my way of presenting the subject. He began his talk by taking up passages and arguments that had been used, and that he had used himself, to prove the truth of the Book of Mormon. He then commented on these passages, but he did not once mention the argu ments I had used. When I spoke again I said.
