Download or read book The Church and the Age Classic Reprint written by William Ralph Inge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Age Though it is not usual for a showman to begin by disparaging his own wares, I feel that some apology is needed for printing addresses which were not written for publication, which were delivered to a very quiet little society of London ladies, and the theme of which was neither chosen by the lecturer nor particularly congenial to him. I am also reluctant even to seem to have been provoked to justify myself against the absurd misrepresentations of the halfpenny news papers and their reporters. I am printing these addresses not on their account, but in deference to strong requests which I could hardly disregard, from those who heard them and many others. The latter, I fear, will find my remarks less bold and original than they had been led to expect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ecclesia Discens: The Church's Lesson From the Age The Sermons and Essays contained in this volume belong to many times and many places but they are connected by a common thought which runs through them all, and have been chosen or written as bearing on the question which is implied in the title of the book - Ecclesz'a Dz'sams; the Church which somehow seems to have lost the right and power to teach the world and now has to learn from it, if nothing else, at least how to become its teacher again. In other words, I have tried to study the relation of Christianity to the intellectual and social re volutions which appear to be moving every day with increasing velocity about us. A time of swift change winnows out roughly the temporal from the eternal; and in such a time it is well for the persons and institutions that can discern for themselves where truth and life lie in adapta tion to environment, and where they lie in resistance to environment. The two parts of this book offer what have seemed to me hints and helps to that discrimination in the case of the Church and Christianity. I have not tried this time 'to raise more questions than I can solve'; but I expect that will be the result of my attempts at solution. In the first part of the book, the first two chapters deal generally with the religious unrest of the day; and the next three more specially with what is called Modernism. The two papers which follow, on the Sixth Chapter of St. John, ' and the Earliest Preaching, ' will probably puzzle some readers as to the reason of their inclusion. They are intended, not as serious critical studies, but rather as examples of the kind of interest that a very moderately equipped student can get from a reverent treatment of the Bible 'as any, other book.' In the second part, I have'to thank Mr. John Murray for his courtesy in allowing me to reprint the first paper called 'religio Pueri, ' which appeared originally in Tee mont/my Review. The titles of the remaining chapters sufficiently indicate their purpose; and a certain light is thrown, by the dates and places given, on the special conditions under which some of them were first delivered, and which have sometimes influenced the form of what is said in them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church History Through All Ages Through a period of many years, much time has been expended in collecting, arranging, and condensing the materials of this volume. The design of it professes to be to give a brief, but faithful representation of the "Church of God through all Ages, from the first Promise of a Saviour," down to our wondrous times. Archbishop Seeker has happily stated the principles upon which the Author has compiled this History. In his "Lectures on the Church Catechism," that judicious prelate says, "The Catholic church is the universal church spread through the world; and the Catholic faith is the universal faith; that form of doctrine which the apostles delivered to the whole church, and it received. What that faith was we may learn from their writings, contained in the New Testament; and, at so great a distance of time, we can learn it with certainty no where else. Book Christianity in the New Age Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christianity in the New Age Classic Reprint written by Emily Herman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in the New Age "It is no small prudence to keep silence in an evil time," says Thomas a Kempis; and though the dark night is past and the day of victory has come, silence still commends itself as a counsel of discretion. For this is a time of obscure and tangled issues, of the seething turmoil of new and dying tendencies and the blind struggle of unborn and half-born impulses. What we took to be an ordered map has resolved itself into a chaos of crossing lines, and the only thing to be asserted with confidence about a complex of life and thought so full of intricacy and contradiction is its utter impredicability. Book The Church of the Apostles

Download or read book The Church of the Apostles written by John Moore Capes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of the Apostles: An Historical Inquiry It is with no slight regret that I find my task completed, and nothing now remaining for me but to add a few sentences of farewell to my readers, to be prefixed, according to custom, to my little book. In my opening chapter I have so fully explained the object of the present inquiry, that I have now only to point out the singular value of the Epistles of the New Testament as a storehouse of materials for the study of the life of the first Christians when they were formed into communities after our Lord had left this world. Every one knows the importance of contemporary documents in the study of the history of any period of the past, and it is the meagreness of such documents in connection with the second century which makes it so difficult for the ecclesiastical historian to trace the stages by which the Christianity of the apostolic period was modified or developed into the Christianity of the patristic period and of the Council of Nice. Book The Church and the Eastern Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Church and the Eastern Empire Classic Reprint written by Henry Fanshawe Tozer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Eastern Empire IT has often been said that the Eastern Church has no history independently Of the State; and this is so far true, that during long periods the annals of that Com munion have little else to show than lists of patriarchs. At the same time, at certain intervals episodes of great interest and importance occur, and from first to last the influence of the Church on the social and religious life of the Eastern Empire is a subject well worthy of study. To relate, however briefly, those episodes, and to trace the working of that influence, is the object of the pre sent volume. The early period, that Of the first four General Councils, belongs to the history of the Church at large, and therefore is only touched upon here as far as subsequent events depended upon it; it is the later, or Byzantine, age of the Eastern Church which we have especially to consider. Book The Church for Americans Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Church for Americans Classic Reprint written by William Montgomery Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-29 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church for Americans The concern which this book manifests for the Ecclesiastical side of Christianity and the little it has to say about its spiritual and practical aspects, is due to what the writer considers to be, just now, the special religious need of our time and country. This is not instruction in the moral requirements of Christianity so much as the establishment of the fact that Christ founded a Church which has come down to us, and with some branch of which it is the privilege and duty of all to identify themselves. The idea that one Church is as good as another and that consequently it prac tically makes no difference to which we belong, is responsible for the enormous non-church element of the United States, which, according to the last census, amounted to more than half of the whole population, and for the loose hold which all bodies of Christians have upon their constituency. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in the Apostolic Age A history of Christianity in the Apostolic Age should begin with an account of the life and teachings of our Lord. In the series, however, to which the present work belongs a separate volume has been assigned to The Life of Jesus, and intrusted to the competent hand of Professor Rhees. I have therefore only touched upon the post-resurrection period, so far as it was necessary to set forth the immediate origin of apostolic Christianity.
