Book The Handbook of British Regiments Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Handbook of British Regiments Routledge Revivals written by Christopher Chant and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the creation of the standing army in 1661, when each regiment was known by the name of its current colonel, there have been many reforms and rationalizations of the British army. From 31 cavalry regiments and 113 infantry regiments in 1881, at the time of this title’s first publication in 1988, the army had reduced to just 16 regiments of armour and 39 regiments of infantry through processes of absorption and amalgamation. The Handbook of British Regiments provides insight into the lineage and history of the approximately 85 regiments and corps which formed the British army towards the end of the 1980s. Comprehensive in coverage, each has a separate entry giving factual details in a layout standardized for easy comparison, including current title, colonel-in-chief, uniform and history, amongst others. A key title amongst Routledge reference reissues, this handbook provides an accessible guide to specialists as well as lay enthusiasts, and illustrates a sense of the continuity and inherited tradition of each regiment and corps.

Book excerpt: With its massive limestone walls, elegant Martello towers, and strategic location, Fort Henry was once central to the defence of Canada. Today, the Fort is a living museum, where visitors can watch the Fort Henry Guard perform precision drill and battle re-enactments from 1867—a time when British redcoats garrisoned the fort against the risk of American attack. Visitors to this National Historic Site can also experience what life was life for soldiers, their families and the civilian population during this period in Canadian history. Fort Henry: An Illustrated Guide provides readers with a room-by-room tour of the Fort as it is today, including the advanced battery, ramparts and reverse fire chamber; living quarters for soldiers, officers and their families; a schoolroom, a bakery, and even privies and prisoner cells! Researched and written by former Fort Henry curator Stephen Mecredy, this book also offers a short history of the Fort—from its importance as the Citadel of Upper Canada, to the elaborate and costly restoration of the Fort in 1930s, and its uses an internment camp and Prisoner of War camp during both World Wars. This revised edition is handsomely illustrated with up-to-date photography as well as rare nineteenth-century prints and paintings, and includes a glossary of military terms, a list of British and Canadian units stationed at the Fort, and excerpts from historical documents.

Book British Military Operations in Egypt and the Sudan

Download or read book British Military Operations in Egypt and the Sudan written by Harold E. Raugh and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2008-05-02 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Army's campaigns in Egypt and the Sudan from 1882 to 1899 were among the most dramatic and hard-fought in British military history. In 1882, the British sent an expeditionary force to Egypt to quell the Arabic Revolt and secure British control of the Suez Canal, its lifeline to India. The enigmatic British Major General Charles G. Gordon was sent to the Sudan in 1884 to study the possibility of evacuating Egyptian garrisons threatened by Muslim fanatics, the dervishes, in the Sudan. While the dervishes defeated the British forces on a number of occasions, the British eventually learned to combat the insurrection and ultimately, largely through superior technology and firepower, vanquished the insurgents in 1898. British Operations in Egypt and the Sudan: A Selected Bibliography enumerates and generally describes and annotates hundreds of contemporary, current, and hard-to-find books, journal articles, government documents, and personal papers on all aspects of British military operations in Egypt and the Sudan from 1882 to 1899. Arranged chronologically and topically, chapters cover the various campaigns, focusing on specific battles, leading military personalities, and the contributions of imperial nations as well as supporting services of the British Army. This definitive volume is an indispensable reference for researching imperialism, colonial history, and British military operations, leadership, and tactics.

Book History of the XX Regiment 1688 1888 Lancashire Fusiliers

Download or read book History of the XX Regiment 1688 1888 Lancashire Fusiliers written by Lieut Quartermaster Smyth, B. and published by . This book was released on 2014-03 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a regimental history of the Lancashire Fusiliers, one of the greatest names in the British Army for 200 years from its foundation down to 1888. Founded in 1688, the year of William III's Glorious Revolution, the regiment first saw service in the Caribbean before being deployed to defend the Rock of Gibraltar during the great siege. In the War of the Austrian Succession, it took part in the battles of Dettingen and Fontenoy against France; helped suppress Bonnie Prince Charlie's 1745 Jacobite rebellion at Culloden. Probably the Regiment's most famous member was Gen. James Wolfe, and though it missed his great victory at Quebec, the regiment took part in other battles of the Seven Years' War - notably Minden. In the Napoleonic Wars, the Fusiliers were present at Sir John Moore's retreat to Corunna, and in the Peninsular War fought at Vittoria, the Pyrenees, Nivelle and Orthes. During the Crimean War, the regiment fought at all the major battles - the Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and the Siege of Sebastopol. Almost immediately, the regiment was embarked for India to fight the Mutiny - taking part in the relief of the Siege of Lucknow.

Book The Man Who Captured Washington

Download or read book The Man Who Captured Washington written by John McCavitt and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Irish officer in the British Army, Major General Robert Ross (1766–1814) was a charismatic leader widely admired for his bravery in battle. Despite a military career that included distinguished service in Europe and North Africa, Ross is better known for his actions than his name: his 1814 campaign in the Chesapeake Bay resulted in the burning of the White House and Capitol and the unsuccessful assault on Baltimore, immortalized in “The Star Spangled Banner.” The Man Who Captured Washington is the first in-depth biography of this important but largely forgotten historical figure. Drawing from a broad range of sources, both British and American, military historians John McCavitt and Christopher T. George provide new insight into Ross’s career prior to his famous exploits at Washington, D.C. Educated in Dublin, Ross joined the British Army in 1789, earning steady promotion as he gained combat experience. The authors portray him as an ambitious but humane commanding officer who fought bravely against Napoleon’s forces on battlefields in Holland, southern Italy, Egypt, and the Iberian Peninsula. Following the end of the war in Europe, while still recovering from a near-fatal wound, Ross was designated to lead an “enterprise” to America, and in August 1814 he led a small army to victory in the Battle of Bladensburg. From there his forces moved to the city of Washington, where they burned public buildings. In detailing this campaign, McCavitt and George clear up a number of misconceptions, including the claim that the British burned the entire city of Washington. Finally, the authors shed new light on the long-debated circumstances surrounding Ross’s death on the eve of the Battle of North Point at Baltimore. Ross’s campaign on the shores of the Chesapeake lasted less than a month, but its military and political impact was enormous. Considered an officer and a gentleman by many on both sides of the Atlantic, the general who captured Washington would in time fade in public memory. Yet, as McCavitt and George show, Ross’s strategies and achievements during the final days of his career would shape American defense policy for decades to come.
