Compare here 1 Kings x. 5: the Sitt1ng of his (Solomon's) servants. To be saved by Christ Jesus, to believe in Christ Jesus, is much; but to be in Christ Jesus--what can it mean? Surely it is the expression of the greatest nearness to God of which language is capable! The whole sentence, perhaps, may be paraphrased: Placed in a condition of perfect rest, safety, and enjoyment, so near God as to know Him, not as His far-off subjects may, but as the sons of His house, the members of His family. The man who is in this position and knows it, is a delightful person to meet; he is pleasant in manner, he is not tired or hurried or depressed or murmuring. He is seated at home in his own sphere and enjoying it. Hence, with every want supplied, in touch with all-love and all-wisdom, he is naturally utterly unselfish (no praise to him), and is full of strength and courage to fight the good fight, to finish his course, and to keep the faith the warfare, the walk, the witness of the Christian man (2 Tim. iv. 7). But the secret of it all, the source of his strength and untiring zeal, is found in his being seated together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. No murmur is ever heard here, SSnnursin heavenly no doubts are possible here--no dis-p'aces-cords of earth's purblind reasonings. The eye is opened, and the ears; and, the tongue has learned to speak the language of Heaven, so that it calls bitter, sweet; and pain, joy; and all ill, good, --so it be His sweet will. Such, then, is the twofold life of God's child. child, at home now with God in Christ in Heavenly Places, in perfect happiness while fighting the battles of the Lord, or standing at His door and waiting, or treading a lonely path across a wilderness just as it pleases Him. So far we..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an urbane and persuasive tract for our time, the distinguished Catholic theologian combines a comprehensive metaphysics with a sensitivity to contemporary existentialist thought. Father Murray traces the “problem of God” from its origins in the Old Testament, through its development in the Christian Fathers and the definitive statement by Aquinas, to its denial by modern materialism. Students and nonspecialist intellectuals may both benefit by the book, which illuminates the problem of development of doctrine that is now, even more than in the days of Newman, a fundamental issue between Roman Catholic and Protestant, theologians and nonspecialst intellectuals alike will find the subject of vital interest. As a challenge to the ecumenical dialogue, the question is raised whether, in the course of its development through different phases, the problem of God has come back to its original position. Father Murray is Ordinary professor of theology at Woodstock College, Woodstock, Maryland. St. Thomas More Lectures, 1. "A gem of a book—lucid, illuminating, brilliantly written. A fine contribution to the current Catholic theological renaissance."—Paul Weiss.

Book Myth Symbol and Meaning in Mary Poppins

Download or read book Myth Symbol and Meaning in Mary Poppins written by Giorgia Grilli and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mary Poppins that many people know of today--a stern, but sweet, loveable, and reassuring British nanny--is a far cry from the character created by Pamela Lyndon Travers in the 1930's. Instead, this is the Mary Poppins reinvented by Disney in the eponymous movie. This book sheds light on the original Mary Poppins, Myth, Symbol, and Meaning in Mary Poppins is the only full-length study that covers all the Mary Poppins books, exposing just how subversive the pre-Disney Mary Poppins character truly was. Drawing important parallels between the character and the life of her creator, who worked as a governess herself, Grilli reveals the ways in which Mary Poppins came to unsettle the rigid and rigorous rules of Victorian and Edwardian society that most governesses embodied, taught, and passed on to their charges.
