Book Indira Files A Critical Look at The Controversial Side of Indira Gandhi

Download or read book Indira Files A Critical Look at The Controversial Side of Indira Gandhi written by Vishnu Sharma and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have always felt that Indira Gandhi is the exceptional and foremost example of the dynastic politics of independent India. She is a perfect example of dynastic rule, on one hand, she is called the 'Iron Lady', on the other hand, people pay tribute to her dictatorship for imposing emergency in the country. Where on one hand Indira Gandhi carved her name in golden letters in Indian history by dividing Pakistan into two, on the contrary, she has also endured the slogans like Sanjay ki mummy, badi nikammi for blindly loving her son like Gandhari loved Duryodhana. Nonetheless, we cannot forget that it was Indira Gandhi who gave wings to India's strength and courage by conducting the Nuclear Test; however, she was also the Prime Minister for whom the High Court issued orders to be removed from her office. In fact, Indira Gandhi is merely a symbol of dynasty politics. The point here is to remind the young people that they cannot strive for ideal politics by idolising those who have flourished through family inheritance of post or position. In today's scenario, there are numerous political parties that operate under a single family's control. Although I hold great admiration for Indira Gandhi, however, her darker side is perhaps more prominent. Hence, I believe that young aspirants who are interested in politics can learn valuable lessons from this book on what not to do!

Book Contempt of Court and Freedom of Speech

Download or read book Contempt of Court and Freedom of Speech written by Bibha Tripathi and published by Readworthy. This book was released on with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom of speech and a free and fair justice delivery system are two most important components of democracy, and striking a balance between them is a must for its smooth running. The law of contempt of court in India has assumed immense social and political significance due to growing judicial tendency to gag and often to subjugate the democratic aspirations and dissent. This book presents a critical assessment of the freedom of speech as enshrined in the Indian Constitution and encroachment on it by the proactive approach of judiciary through the instrument of the law of contempt of the court. Tracing the history of the contempt of court, it discusses at length the various aspects of democracy and freedom of speech, the status of contempt of court in various countries, the law of contempt and constitutional guarantees, and judicial accountability. It also tries to explore gender biases in the delivery of justice in the cases related to the contempt of court.

This volume, through case studies, investigates corruption in the Global South (especially India and Brazil) and West (especially Switzerland) to gain a more nuanced view of the phenomenon. The chapters in this volume are organized into two loosely structured and overlapping parts: the first part consisting of Chapters 2-5 covers conceptual questions related to corruption discourses from different perspectives such as economic ethics, social capital theory and literature; the second part consisting of Chapters 6-11 details the complexity and diversity of corruption practices within and between countries and regions, providing different interpretative frameworks, which in turn flow into discourses on corruption.

Book excerpt: How people make sense of illness is, in part, culturally determined. Existing community beliefs and presuppositions are organized as cultural models, which “make meaning” of new situations such as the HIV/AIDS epidemic. These cultural constructions can also contribute to the spread of the epidemic. This volume examines the meaning and cultural contexts of HIV/AIDS in Nepal, where AIDS is relatively new and rapidly growing. -- David K. Beine

Book Community Radio in South Asia

Download or read book Community Radio in South Asia written by Kanchan K. Malik and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the state of community radio, a significant independent media movement that began about two decades ago, in different parts of South Asia. The volume outlines the socioeconomic and historical contexts for understanding the evolution and functioning of community radio in an increasingly globalised media environment. It provides a ring-side view of how various countries in South Asia have formulated policies that enabled the emergence of this third sector of broadcasting (public and private being the other two) through radio, rendering the media ecology in the region more pluralistic and diverse. The chapters in the volume, interspersed by practitioner perspectives, discuss a range of key issues related to community radio: radio policies, NGOisation of community radio, spectrum management and democratisation of technology, disasters/emergencies, gender issues, sustainability, and conflicts. One of the first of its kind, this volume will appeal to scholars and researchers of community media and independent media studies, cultural studies, as well as sociology and social anthropology, and South Asian studies.

Book Nation Building and Federalism in Nepal

Download or read book Nation Building and Federalism in Nepal written by Krishna Hachhethu and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-08 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nation-Building and Federalism in Nepal primarily deals with the presentation and elucidation of identity-based federalism, a unique concept and a novel form of federalism. The most notable source of first-hand information was garnered through the author's involvement in constitution-making by proxy, as a member of the High-Level State Restructuring Recommendation Commission and as a facilitator of several interaction programmes conducted in dialogue form: that is, dialogues with citizens, stakeholders, members of the Constituent Assembly, office-bearers within political parties (intra-party), and leaders across the parties (inter-party). This book, therefore, discusses these issues and helps provide insights into the politics behind the parties' shifting positions on contentious issues related to the constitution at the time of its making; understand better the conflicting aspirations from and competing perceptions of restructuring the Nepali state among the people from different ethnic backgrounds; and capture the role played by intermediate agencies at a critical time of its constitution-making (2006-2015).
