Book The Bald Eagle The Improbable Journey of America s Bird

Download or read book The Bald Eagle The Improbable Journey of America s Bird written by Jack E. Davis and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best Books of the Month: Wall Street Journal, Kirkus Reviews From the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Gulf, a sweeping cultural and natural history of the bald eagle in America. The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you’re not inclined to argue with. For centuries, Americans have celebrated it as “majestic” and “noble,” yet savaged the living bird behind their national symbol as a malicious predator of livestock and, falsely, a snatcher of babies. Taking us from before the nation’s founding through inconceivable resurgences of this enduring all-American species, Jack E. Davis contrasts the age when native peoples lived beside it peacefully with that when others, whether through hunting bounties or DDT pesticides, twice pushed Haliaeetus leucocephalus to the brink of extinction. Filled with spectacular stories of Founding Fathers, rapacious hunters, heroic bird rescuers, and the lives of bald eagles themselves—monogamous creatures, considered among the animal world’s finest parents—The Bald Eagle is a much-awaited cultural and natural history that demonstrates how this bird’s wondrous journey may provide inspiration today, as we grapple with environmental peril on a larger scale.

Book The Flight of the Eagle

Download or read book The Flight of the Eagle written by J Krishnamurti and published by Random House. This book was released on 2014-10-02 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895-1986) rose from humble beginnings to become a leading spiritual and philosophical thinker. His works continue to influence thousands of people around the world; Joseph Campbell, Alan Watts, Eckhart Tolle and Deepak Chopra have all been indebted to him. And yet he belonged to no religion, sect or country. Nor did he subscribe to any school of political or ideological thought. On the contrary, Krishnamurti maintained that these are the very factors that divide human beings and bring about conflict and war – an approach that makes his teachings particularly appealing in our own times. The Flight of the Eagle is regarded as one of Krishnamurti’s key works, grappling with themes such as freedom, change, peace, violence and – finally – the transcendental and the unknown.

Book excerpt: Like an eagle, American colonists ascended from the gulley of British dependence to the position of sovereign world power in a period of merely two centuries. Seizing territory in Canada and representation in Britain; expelling the French, and even their British forefathers, American leaders George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson paved their nation’s way to independence. With the first buds of public relation techniques—of communication, dramatization, and propaganda—America flourished into a vision of freedom, of enterprise, and of unalienable human rights. In Flight of the Eagle, Conrad Black provides a perspective on American history that is unprecedented. Through his analysis of the strategic development of the United States from 1754-1992, Black describes nine “phases” of the strategic rise of the nation, in which it progressed through grave challenges, civil and foreign wars, and secured a place for itself under the title of “Superpower.” Black discredits prevailing notions that our unrivaled status is the product of good geography, demographics, and good luck. Instead, he reveals and analyzes the specific strategic decisions of great statesmen through the ages that transformed the world as we know it and established America’s place in it.

With his great attitude, the eagle adapts to change, is patient and is able to focus to his prey due to his determination and sense of purpose. Like eagles, man can leave his comfort zone, work hard and finish what he started. Moral degeneration has stolen mans glory. He must respect his family and die being in the hands of God as do eagles which die facing the sun with their talons on the rock which symbolises Christ.

Book The Path of an Eagle Despair Hope Glory

Download or read book The Path of an Eagle Despair Hope Glory written by Daniel McKorley (McDan) and published by George Pardmore. This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I have specified many times, I started life by working for and with others. That is the only way to begin it, if you did not have a silver spoon in your mouth at birth. Imagine wanting to start a business but not having seed money, and without a friend or relative out there to lend you a helping hand. I did not have either advantage from the beginning-no seed money and no helping hand, therefore the only option for me was to work and save to raise some capital myself. Working for others did not only help me raise capital, it also enabled me acquire experiences and ideas which later facilitated immensely in building my own business. These days I see many people going into businesses without first going through some form of training or even serving as apprentices under people with the know-how. That is rather risky, and I do not know why someone would try to do that. Having some foreknowledge in anything we venture to do in life helps to mitigate our risks. Who would risk walking across a river without first finding out how deep it is? And it usually requires someone who has crossed that river before to tell us whether it is deep or shallow. In my case, I worked for others in the import and export industry for many years before starting my company. I had acquired many experiences and thought it was time I brought all that to bear. Having considered a lot of factors, I walked to my boss one day and asked that he accept my resignation. To me, that was more respectful than writing a letter. My boss had been very kind to me, and I felt I should reciprocate his kindness by having a one-on-one discussion with him over my intentions to resign. Although his children's behaviour was rather obnoxious, I thought I needed to maintain a healthy relationship with the man himself since he personally had not offended me in any way. It was very early in the morning when I got to my boss's house. He thought I had come to discuss something concerning my work, but to his dismay, I dropped the bombshell. For some time he was speechless, indicating the level of his perplexity. "I may be leaving, Sir," I said, "but I'll be available to help in any area where my assistance would be needed." Upon this assurance, he gave a deep sigh, and I could very well understand his crestfallen look. We had worked together for a long time and he knew I had played a very critical role in the success of the business. He had confidence in my competencies and my strong work ethic so I could understand how difficult this was for him. "I know you don't mean any harm," my boss said when he finally found his voice, "but I am aware what your exit means to this company." I nodded with my head still bent down. I did not want him to solicit my sympathy with his grief-stricken mood. He begged me to stay for some six months so I could help train someone to take over from me. To prove to him that I did not have any malicious intent, I accepted to do as he had requested. Five months into the training programme, however, I realized it would definitely take longer than six months for the new guy to be well-versed in our operations because he was a bit slow on the uptake. I reported my observations to my boss and this time, he allowed me to go. McDan was started with minimal capital. Though I had some savings, the money that was available at that time was nothing, compared to what I had in mind to do, but I saw some opportunities ahead and I knew I could tap into them. My many years of working in the field had brought me into contact with many friends and acquaintances. I also had an in-depth knowledge of the terrains of Shipping and Logistics. It was, therefore, not difficult for me to acquire certain requisite documents and facilities that I needed to have before I could start operations. I am proud to add that my conduct and high professionalism over the years had also endeared me to many people in authority.

Book excerpt: Bald Eagles Their life and behavior in North America Photographs by Art Wolfe Text by Donald F. Bruning The bald eagle is America's national bird. Protected by the Endangered Species Act of 1973, this bird had made a steady recovery from near extinction. It is fitting for our heritage that Art Wolfe has devoted his photographic talents to capturing bald eagles on film. His large color photographs show the bald eagles from chicks in nests to adults in full plumage, including their mating rituals, their migrations, and, finally, their release into the wild after captivity. Donald F. Bruning's text covers superbly the scientific and ornithological aspects of the bald eagle; their habits in Canada, Alaska, and the continental United States; as well as the effects of the Fish and Wildlife Service and other conservation agencies to preserve and increase the species. Book excerpt: The Double Headed Eagle, the symbol of the Late Byzantine Empire, speaks eloquently to the worldview of the Byzantines, whose Empire looked both to the East and to the West, but never wasor isreally part of either. At its apogee, the Byzantine Empire was the highest civilization in Europethe Center. This Double Headed Eagle is cherished by the Balkan Orthodox successors to Byzantium, and versions of it grace the national flags of Serbia, Montenegro, and even Albania. Encroached upon by both the Muslim East and the Catholic West, the Byzantine Eagle succumbed, only to emerge, in a state of arrested development, after several hundred years of Turkish or Western Catholic rule. This stunted progression emerges time and again in the civic culture, architecture, economics, and politics of the region, and has direct relevance on political and economic issues today, including Greeces present financial malaise, and the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Traveling through this Ex-Byzantine zone, Billinis offers history, architecture, personal experiences, and numerous anecdotes to expound on key central themes. First, that the Balkan Orthodox nations form a common culture and virtual commonwealth, while still maintaining ethnic, geographical, and linguistic diversity. Without understanding this common Byzantine base, it is impossible to appreciate and to understand the region. Second, the common experience of Turkish rule, while preserving Byzantine culture and insulating the Orthodox religion from Catholic encroachment, did so by cutting off Byzantine Europe from economic, political, cultural, and civic development in progress in Western Europe. The states that emerged from this condition wereand areill prepared to contribute and to compete in modern Europe, and in a globalized world. Finally, throughout, there is a sense that history, rather than linear, runs in a circular form, and that history once again encroaches on the lands of the Double Headed Eagle.
