Book The Jets and Supercritical Accretion Disk in SS433

Download or read book The Jets and Supercritical Accretion Disk in SS433 written by S. Fabrika and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and reviews observations and investigations of the unique object SS433 obtained after 23 years of studying the massive binary system. The main difference between SS433 and other known X-ray binaries is the action of a constant supercritical regime for the accretion of gas onto the relativistic star (most likely a black hole) which has led to the formation of a supercritical accretion disk and collimated relativistic jets. The properties of jets are to a large extent determined by their interaction with disk wind. The precession of the disk and jets as well as the eclipsing in the binary system make SS433 a unique laboratory for studies of mechanisms for the microquasar phenomenon. The author describes the main ideas and results emerging from studies of the formation of the jets and supercritical accretion disk in SS433.

Book Observational Manifestation of Chaos in Astrophysical Objects

Download or read book Observational Manifestation of Chaos in Astrophysical Objects written by Alexei Fridman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On August 2000 in the Lomonosov Moscow State University the first scientific conference dedicated to chaos in the real astronomical systems was held. The most prominent astrophysisists - specialist in the field of stochastic dynamics - attended the conference. A broad scope of the problems related to the observed manifes tations of chaotic motions in galactic and stellar objects, with the involvement of basic theory and numerical modeling, were addressed. The idea (not so obvious, as we believe, to many astrophysicists) was to show that, while great progress in the field of stochastic mechanics was accomplished, the science of chaos in actually observed systems is only just being born. Basically, the situation described prompted the organizers to hold the meeting in order to discuss chaotic processes in real systems. It seemed worthwhile to begin these introductory remarks with a brief descrip tion of some events that preceeded the conference. Since actually existing systems are the subject of the natural sciences, and in the latter experiments play the key role, we shall begin our account with the experimental results.

Book Populations of High Energy Sources in Galaxies IAU S230

Download or read book Populations of High Energy Sources in Galaxies IAU S230 written by International Astronomical Union. Symposium and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-06-15 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last 40 years astronomers have observed sources of intense X-ray radiation from beyond our Solar System. These have been associated with remarkable objects, such as neutron stars and black holes. Current satellite observatories have enabled us to extend the studies of these objects from the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds to individual X-ray sources in other galaxies. At the same time, imaging facilities at gamma-rays and TeV energies have improved enormously, leading to many further discoveries within our own galaxy. This Symposium presents an overview of these new developments, covering detailed studies of individual sources within the Milky Way, global descriptions of X-ray source populations in other galaxies, and less resolved relatives at high redshift. Galaxy nuclei and diffuse emission components are included, as are new discoveries at gamma-rays and TeV energies. IAU S230 is a valuable resource for astronomers and graduates working in high-energy astrophysics.

Book Stellar Jets and Bipolar Outflows

Download or read book Stellar Jets and Bipolar Outflows written by L. Errico and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years great improvements in the study of stellar jets and bipolar outflows have been achieved, both observationally and theoretically. High resolution observations at various frequencies (radio, IR, optical and X-ray) of these features in different types of objects have shown a large variety of morphologies at all scales often revealing contrasting symmetries which do not allow straightforward kinematic interpretations valid for all cases. In particular, at present, it seems very difficult to give a statistical definition of what the "standard properties" of jets and bipolar outflows are. On the theoretical side, the identification of physical processes capable of producing the observed rich morphological variety of jets and bipolar outflows and supporting them over long lifetimes is still controversial. Furthermore several models are actively discussed in an attempt of reaching a complete understanding of the phenomenon. The workshop provided an unique opportunity for both observers and theoreticians to gather together and produce an updated and exhaustive picture of the field. In addition the meeting has been enriched by the presentation of some works on jets in external galaxies. This topic was focused on what people working on stellar jets could learn from colleagues working on extragalactic jets and vice versa. Invited papers were prepared with the aim of giving the state of the art about scientific subjects; contributed papers and some selected poster papers presented, on the contrary, very recent results in the various fields.

Book Wormholes Warp Drives and Energy Conditions

Download or read book Wormholes Warp Drives and Energy Conditions written by Francisco S. N. Lobo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Top researchers in the field of gravitation present the state-of-the-art topics outlined in this book, ranging from the stability of rotating wormholes solutions supported by ghost scalar fields, modified gravity applied to wormholes, the study of novel semi-classical and nonlinear energy conditions, to the applications of quantum effects and the superluminal version of the warp drive in modified spacetime. Based on Einstein's field equations, this cutting-edge research area explores the more far-fetched theoretical outcomes of General Relativity and relates them to quantum field theory. This includes quantum energy inequalities, flux energy conditions, and wormhole curvature, and sheds light on not just the theoretical physics but also on the possible applications to warp drives and time travel. This book extensively explores the physical properties and characteristics of these 'exotic spacetimes,' describing in detail the general relativistic geometries that generate closed timelike curves.

Book Exploring the Universe From Near Space to Extra Galactic

Download or read book Exploring the Universe From Near Space to Extra Galactic written by Banibrata Mukhopadhyay and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Festschrift dedicated to the 60th birth anniversary of Prof. Sandip K. Chakrabarti, a well-known Indian astrophysicist, presents a collection of contributions by about fifty scientists who work on diverse topics in contemporary astrophysics and space science including new and low-cost balloon borne experiments, planetary science, astrochemistry and the origin of life, ionospheric research and earthquake predictions, relativistic astrophysics around black holes, and finally, the observational signatures and radiative properties of compact objects. All the authors are well known scholars in their respective subject and are all PhD students of Prof. Sandip K. Chakrabarti. The book demonstrates a two-dimensional evolution of research areas triggered by Sandip Chakrabarti over the past few decades. The first dimension represents the evolution and diversification of Chakrabarti’s own research in which new students were trained. A second dimension arises from the evolution of the research topics pursued by Chakrabarti’s fifty odd doctoral students, many of whom have become renowned scientists in their own right, after starting with a certain subject under Chakrabarti and then migrating to completely new subjects with dexterity. The editors have compiled and edited the articles appropriately to some extent to suit the spirit of this Festschrift on the one hand and to keep balance in diverse topics on the other. Thus this volume also provides an overview for whosoever wishes to enter the important subjects of compact objects, astrochemistry, ionospheric science or space exploration in near space. New graduates, PhD scholars, teachers and researchers will benefit from this volume. Moreover it is a record of tremendous success of a school in a range of vast topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the proceedings of a workshop on stellar continuum radio astronomy that was held in BoUlder, Colorado on August 8-10, 1984. Although it was originally intended to be a small workshop with participants mainly from North America, it evolved to a workshop with 72 partiCipants from twelve countries (U.S.A. 52, Canada 3, the Netherlands 3, United Kingdom 3, Australia 2, Ireland 2, Italy 2, France 1, Mexico 1, Switzerland 1, West Germany 1, and U.S.S.R. 1). This workshop was sponsored by the Joint Institute of Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA) and the University of Colorado. In order to preserve a workshop atmosphere, while still presenting both extensive reviews and contributed papers, an experimental format was adopted. All contributed papers related to the topiCS of the day were presented in poster form in the early morning and were accessible all day. During each morning (or afternoon) session review papers were presented, followed by a coffee break in the poster area adjacent to the conference room. Then the review papers and contributed papers were discussed for roughly one and a half hours. The last session was devoted to invited panel papers and discussion of current and future problems in the field of stellar radio astronomy.
