Book excerpt: William G Baker, a Near East expert, university professor, retired military intelligence officer, native Arabic and Hebrew linguist, and author, answers the following questions in this book: - What was the Diaspora and why were Jews persecuted? - What is Zionism and by what authority was modern Israel established? - How was modern Israeli culture reconstituted and the Hebrew language revived? - What were the Arab-Israeli wars? - Who is Israel's new existential threat? - Who were the Hebrews, Judahites, and Israelites? - When did they rule the land of Israel, who ended their rule and renamed it Palestine? Book Genesis and the Moses Story

Download or read book Genesis and the Moses Story written by Konrad Schmid and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-06-23 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Konrad Schmid is a Swiss biblical scholar who belongs to a larger group of Continental researchers proposing new directions in the study of the Pentateuch. In this volume, a translation of his Erzväter und Exodus, Schmid argues that the ancestor tradition in Genesis and the Moses story in Exodus were two competing traditions of Israel’s origins and were not combined until the time of the Priestly Code—that is, the early Persian period. Schmid interacts with the long tradition of European scholarship on the Hebrew Bible but departs from some of the main tenets of the Documentary Hypothesis: he argues that the pre-Priestly material in both text blocks is literarily and theologically so divergent that their present linkage is more appropriately interpreted as the result of a secondary redaction than as thematic variation stemming from J’s oral prehistory. He dates Genesis–2 Kings to the Persian period and considers it a redactional work that, in its present shape, is a historical introduction to the message of future hope presented in the prophetic corpus of Isaiah-Malachi. Scholars and students alike will be pleased that this translation makes Schmid’s important work readily available in English, both for the contributions made by Schmid and the summary of continental interpretation that he presents. In this edition, some passages have been expanded or modified in order to clarify issues or to engage with more-recent scholarship. The notes and bibliography have also been updated. Dr. Schmid is Professor of Old Testament and Early Judaism at the University of Zürich.

Book The Origin Tradition of Ancient Israel

Download or read book The Origin Tradition of Ancient Israel written by Linda Thompson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1987-11-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than three decades, Thomas L. Thompson has written at the intersection of biblical theology and archaeology. Origin Tradition of Ancient asks important questions about historicity in general and Israel's history in particular-including, perhaps most importantly, at what point Israel's history begins. After surveying the recent literature on the subject, Thompson closely examines the Pentateuchal tradition as a narrative of Israel's history, and offers detailed exegesis of the historical narratives in Genesis and Exodus, including Adam, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, and the sojourn in the wilderness. He closes with a discussion of chronology and historiography.

  • Author : Jason Decosta

  • Pages : 500 pages

Download or read book The Genesis of Israel written by Jason Decosta and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the world of Academic Theology, there are many competing views. But are any truly consistent from cover to cover? Do any of the dominant positions apply a consistent narrative-honoring approach from the first page of Genesis to the last page of Revelation? The Fulfilled Eschatological view has been growing rapidly over the past two centuries. People are realizing that Jesus and His disciples made some very clear and undeniable promises to the people living in that last days generation. The Old Covenant was coming to a close and soon the Old Heaven and Earth would pass away precisely when the Mosaic Law passed away, according to Jesus Himself. With this newfound clarity, and with our once held end times views being shattered, are we honestly able to say that Genesis creation does not deserve another look? If the end of the story pertains only to the de-creation of Israel as a Covenant people, wouldn't it make sense that the start of that same story is concerned with the Genesis of Israel as a Covenant people? Why would the start of the story describe the material creation of the cosmos, but the end of the story describe the destruction of the Old Covenant? In this unique work, DeCosta attacks this very topic from numerous angles while showing the consistency and fluidity of the bible from cover to cover. Knitting and weaving together countless passages, this book brings clarity to many once dark and cloudy areas of scripture. This collection of dozens of topical studies will flesh out and shed new light on the curse of Adam, the language and imagery of the bible, the incredible consistency from Genesis to Revelation, and more. Reading this work is as if you are sitting around the kitchen table having a discussion with the author himself. There is truly no other book in Christendom that will offer what this book does. Be prepared to be challenged in a most enjoyable way!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does the creation of the universe in six (or seven) days, according to the Book of Genesis, fit the evidence of the universe 15 milliard years of existence? Why does the Book of Genesis contain three different creation stories? In what sense is the Book of Genesis written in future tense? What is the meaning of one of the very first commandments, "to till it and to keep it", and why are we told, in so many details, about Noah's project of keeping the world's fauna? Why is the Book of Genesis focused on fights between brothers, even murders, generation after generation and how can they be resolved? Isaac's sacrifice: who was testing whom and howdid Isaac have the last laugh? Is "Israel" a feminine/maternal entity? Esau and Jacob in the continual Jewish Christian contention and the mysterious and awesome role of "the Ancient Kings of Edom". What is the significance of the Twelve Tribes of Israel to our present time? These questions and many others are the core of ReGenesis: While giving fair treatment to key traditional Jewish and Christian, and even Muslim, exegesis, this study reveals many novel discoveries, based on recent research as well as on a wealth of letter codes and numericalpatterns.

Book Adam as Israel

    Book Details:
  • Author : Seth D. Postell
  • Publisher : James Clarke Company
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 9780227680193
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Adam as Israel written by Seth D. Postell and published by James Clarke Company. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Adam is the story of Israel writ small In this text-centered interpretation of Genesis 1-3, Seth Postell contends that the opening chapters of the Bible, when interpreted as a strategic literary introduction to the Torah and to the Tanakh, intentionally foreshadows Israel's failure to keep the Sinai Covenant and their exile from the Promised Land, in order to point the reader to a future work of God, whereby a king will come in "the last days" to fulfill Adam's original mandate to conquer the land (Gen 1:28). Thus Genesis 1-3, the Torah, and the Hebrew Bible as a whole have an eschatological trajectory. Postell highlights numerous intentional links between the story of Adam and the story of Israel and, in the process, explains numerous otherwise perplexing features of the Eden story.

Download or read book The Myths of Israel the Ancient Book of Genesis written by Amos Kidder Fiske and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Myths of Israel, the Ancient Book of Genesis: With Analysis and Explanation of Its Composition Modern critical research into the sources and character of the ancient scriptures of the Hebrews leaves no reasonable doubt that the Book of Gen esis, which was used as an introduction to the old Jewish law, is a composite production made up largely of myths and fragments of myths em bodying the conceptions of the earliest writers of Israel, regarding the relations of that people to their deity. Study of it in this aspect gives it a new interest and significance, while persist ence in the old View of its origin and meaning is in danger of sinking it from reverence to de rision.
