Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Invaders The mists that hid Sugarloaf and made a mountain of Toby brought the children's voices quite clearly to the two men waiting under the rock maple by the cemetery gate. The one, gray-faced and gray-haired, in army cape and veteran's hat, sat on a flat, lichened tombstone, his very blue eyes traveling from one soldier's grave to the other. His companion, young and ruddy and well-knit, in white sweater and golf trousers, leaned on the stone wall, his bare head crinkled with abundant tawny hair. He was looking away, frowning at the vast levels of the onion fields faintly green with the new crop, and deserted except for the bent figures of the weeders in the rows. "But, Grandfather," he had just said, rolling a cigarette between his shapely hands, "living is a long sight cheaper in Paris than it is here, even as we live. So economy is no excuse." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of a summer in a wealthy Connecticut community, a forty-something woman and her college-age stepson’s lives fall apart in a series of violent shocks. Cheryl has never been the right kind of country-club wife. She's always felt like an outsider, and now, in her mid-forties—facing the harsh realities of aging while her marriage disintegrates and her troubled stepson, Teddy, is kicked out of college—she feels cast adrift by the sparkling seaside community of Little Neck Cove, Connecticut. So when Teddy shows up at home just as a storm brewing off the coast threatens to destroy the precarious safe haven of the cove, she joins him in an epic downward spiral. The Invaders, a searing follow-up to Karolina Waclawiak’s critically acclaimed debut novel, How to Get Into the Twin Palms, casts a harsh light on the glossy sheen of even the most “perfect” lives in America's exclusive beach communities. With sharp wit and dark humor, The Invaders exposes the lies and insecurities that run like faultlines through our culture, threatening to pitch bored housewives, pill-popping children, and suspicious neighbors headlong into the suburban abyss.

In its pages we have attempted to demonstrate how ideas with a purpose, spread by men with missions, have influenced the destinies of nations and the lives of individuals throughout history and at the present instant. If this book has a moral, it is the simple fact that the most important things each of us possesses, the freedom of our minds and spirits - in short, the things that make life worth living - are at the mercy of the force of such ideas and of men with such missions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from After the Battle of Dorking: Or What Became of the Invaders It is well written, but no better than an average Blackwood article. The author writes on military subjects like a soldier, but so does Col. Hamley, who wields a more practised pen. He presages the sudden downfall of England's greatness, but so have many before him any time these three hundred years. Perhaps the real secret, after all, lies in its appropriateness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italy and Her Invaders, Vol. 5 I ought further to warn the general reader (whom as well as the trained historical student I always desire to find among my audience) that there are four chapters in the later of these two volumes, which I cannot expect him to endure with patience. They are the fifth, tenth and fourteenth, dealing with the Lombard Laws, and the thirteenth which describes the oficial machinery of the Exarchate of Ravenna. Perhaps also, if he have not a keen appetite for theo logical controversy, he will do well to leave unread the last chapter of the fifth volume which describes the Istrian schism, important as that schism was in its bearing on the early history of Venice. Book Italy and Her Invaders Vol 7

Download or read book Italy and Her Invaders Vol 7 written by Thomas Hodgkin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italy and Her Invaders, Vol. 7: 744-774 The two volumes now offered to the public complete my history of Italy and her Invaders. In accordance with the original design and the title of the work, the story of the invading nation is treated as fully as that of the invaded land, and the reader will consequently find the early chapters of the Seventh Volume almost exclusively occupied with Frankish affairs. Afterwards the narrative concerns itself with two leading events, the foundation of the temporal power of the Pope and the proclamation of Charles as Emperor of Rome. Tedious this history must often be, since it has to be compiled, not from the vivid narration of an Ammianus or a Procopius, but from jejune chronicles and shreds of Papal correspondence, which often tell us the beginning of a story without its end. But, however unattractive may be the recital, the period is well worthy of careful study for the sake of the light which it throws on the whole history of Medieval Europe. I think my readers will find that the struggles of Guelfs and Ghibellines, and the pages of Dante's 'De Monarchia, ' are rendered more intelligible by a study of the letters in the Codex Carolinus. It might perhaps have been expected that a history of the Lombard state would take some note of the upgrowth of Lombard architecture.
