Book Perceiving Behaving Becoming

Download or read book Perceiving Behaving Becoming written by H. Jerome Freiberg and published by ASCD. This book was released on 1999 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962, ASCD's Perceiving, Behaving, Becoming: A New Focus for Education provided bold insights on the psychological foundation of education. Some of the most compelling questions in education today were first asked in this groundbreaking work, which included chapters by preeminent scholars Arthur Combs, Earl Kelley, Abraham Maslow, and Carl Rogers. Although we cannot predict what current information future generations will need to know, the book's Introduction states, creating schools that encourage the development of persons with adequate, fully functioning personalities is the best way to contribute some degree of stability to an uncertain future. Decades later, in preparing Perceiving, Behaving, Becoming: Lessons Learned, editor H. Jerome Freiberg invited distinguished scholars in the field of affective/humanistic education and psychology to review these four chapters from the 1962 book to provide a context for lessons learned for future generations of educators. Each author in Lessons Learned works with teachers, administrators, and schools and offers a distinct perspective on the human side of teaching and learning. Their analyses raise significant issues, such as whether an emphasis on academic standards ignores the education of the whole student, and what schools that are committed to an environment of trust and respect look like. Lessons Learned promises to further the cause of education that focuses on the person. By understanding the evolution of our educational past, says Freiberg, perhaps we can shape a future that will better meet the needs of generations that come after us.

Book Methods of Research in Psychotherapy

Download or read book Methods of Research in Psychotherapy written by Louis A. Gottschalk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prospective reader may well ask about the particular merits of this volume, especially in view of several dozen similar offerings, each with its own excellences, and of the easy availability of symposia, conferences, con ventional reviews, abstract journals, and serial research reports. In spite of such other attractions, it seems to me that these 34 essays are among the most informative and stimulating which are now available in the areas cov ered. The editors have been successful in attracting new articles from many of the most prominent investigators now actively working at research in psychotherapy, who can therefore speak for themselves about what they are doing. Several of the articles have been in the preparatory stage for numerous years. Not only do they represent the vanguard of research, but because of the introduction of relatively new concepts in communication theory in the clinical setting which can be implemented by the new tech nology (specifically the use of sound-films and tape), they probably presage the shape of much that is to come. It is commonplace that the history of a science is closely allied to the history of the tools available. Here we see the concepts, attitudes, and working methods on this frontier being set forth frankly and concretely in ways which avoid many of the deficiencies and evasions of previous clini cal research.

Book Handbook of Positive Psychology in Schools

Download or read book Handbook of Positive Psychology in Schools written by Michael J. Furlong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-03-04 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National surveys consistently reveal that an inordinate number of students report high levels of boredom, anger, and stress in school, which often leads to their disengagement from critical learning and social development. If the ultimate goal of schools is to educate young people to become responsible and critically thinking citizens who can succeed in life, understanding factors that stimulate them to become active agents in their own leaning is critical. A new field labeled "positive psychology" is one lens that can be used to investigate factors that facilitate a student’s sense of agency and active school engagement. The purposes of this groundbreaking Handbook are to 1) describe ways that positive emotions, traits, and institutions promote school achievement and healthy social/emotional development 2) describe how specific positive-psychological constructs relate to students and schools and support the delivery of school-based services and 3) describe the application of positive psychology to educational policy making. By doing so, the book provides a long-needed centerpiece around which the field can continue to grow in an organized and interdisciplinary manner. Key features include: Comprehensive – this book is the first to provide a comprehensive review of what is known about positive psychological constructs and the school experiences of children and youth. Topical coverage ranges from conceptual foundations to assessment and intervention issues to service delivery models. Intrapersonal factors (e.g., hope, life satisfaction) and interpersonal factors (e.g., positive peer and family relationships) are examined as is classroom-and-school-level influences (e.g., student-teacher and school-community relations). Interdisciplinary Focus – this volume brings together the divergent perspectives, methods, and findings of a broad, interdisciplinary community of scholars whose work often fails to reach those working in contiguous fields. Chapter Structure – to insure continuity, flow, and readability chapters are organized as follows: overview, research summary, relationship to student development, examples of real-world applications, and a summarizing table showing implications for future research and practice. Methodologies – chapters feature longitudinal studies, person-centered approaches, experimental and quasi-experimental designs and mixed methods.
