Book excerpt: Many of the pressing health problems facing communities worldwide are being addressed through collaborations between diverse organizations and individuals. Increasingly, this method to address community health issues is being required by both governmental and philanthropic funders. The literature on community collaborations has focused almost exclusively on the benefits to the community; however, this is only a partial picture of this complex phenomenon. The purpose of this study was to examine and understand the benefits to the communities, organizations, and individuals which participate in community collaborations focusing on a health-related issues. This study sought to explore the nature of these collaborations, motivations to participate, perceived quality of collaboration, and the predictors and outcomes of three benefit types: community, organizational, and individual. Using the Amazon Mechanical Turk platform for recruitment and utilizing a quantitative instrument, the study sampled 235 participants of community collaborations focusing on health problems. The results of the study identified four principal conclusions: (1) benefits are interrelated and occur at high intensities for communities, organizations, and individuals, (2) participants' motivation was the strongest predictor of benefits, (3) perceived quality of collaboration is a strong predictor of all three benefit types, and (4) a multivariate, complex model offers the best explanation of benefits. These findings extend the understanding of the process of collaboration and highlight the importance of considering the role and outcomes related to individuals. Additionally, the results emphasize the importance of collaboration quality. Many theories include collaboration characteristics such as leadership, communication, goals and resources within their frameworks but lack an exploration as to how the degree or quality of these factors impacts the process and ultimate outputs and outcomes of these partnerships. By examining both the individual and collective impacts of motivation, quality, and three types of benefits, this study provides an important advancement to further develop a theory of collaboration beyond current "black box models" and allows for the refinement of current best practices.

Book excerpt: Interorganizational Collaboration: Complexity, Ethics, and Communication centers around three key assertions: (1) interorganizational collaboration is complex and warrants study as a specific type of leadership and communication; (2) successful collaborative relationships are grounded in a principled ethic of democratic and egalitarian participation; and (3) interorganizational collaboration requires a specific communication language of practice. Interorganizational collaboration is influenced by increased interconnectedness, shifting organizational needs, and a changing workforce. Collaboration invokes ethical questions and ethical responsibilities that must be considered in communication practices and structures. Although there are many popular books and practitioner materials on collaboration, most are not focused on introducing foundational concepts to a novice audience. In addition, the subject of communication in collaboration has been somewhat underdeveloped. The authors focus on communication from a social constructionist stance. One of their primary goals is to develop a collaboration pedagogy based on existing communication scholarship. The authors present communicative practices vital to interorganizational participation, and they view collaboration as something beyond an exchange of resources and knowledge. Unlike group and organizational texts that approach collaboration from a functional or strategic perspective, this text anchors collaboration in the assumption that democratic and principled communication will foster creative and accountable outcomes for participants in collaborative problem solving. The authors articulate a collaborative ethic useful in all communicative contexts. Micropractices of communication are fundamental not only to collaborating across organizations but also to fostering just and trusting relationships. The book discusses the cornerstone assumptions and principled practices necessary for stakeholders to address problems—for example, recognizing and validating the needs of fellow stakeholders; separating people’s positions from underlying interests; listening for things that are never quite said; identifying overlapping commonalities; building trust while respecting difference; and constructively navigating conflict. The book also focuses on building collaborative praxis based on the assumption of contingency. Praxis cultivates knowledge and ethical understanding of a situation so participants in collaborations can make the best decision based on specific circumstances.
