Book The Intermediate Worker and His Work Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Intermediate Worker and His Work Classic Reprint written by Edward S. Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Intermediate Worker and His Work As education is becoming the dominant interest in society, religious education is coming to its own in the Church. Her own children are at once her first responsibility and her only hope. She can not lose these and win anything. If she saves these she can save the world. The new life in the modern Sunday-school is the expression of this deepening conviction. We are coming to see that no sacrifice is too deep and no expense too great for the winning of our youth to Christ and building them up in Christ. Their responsiveness to skillful training is a moral wonder. With the decline of the feeling of hopelessness engendered by an over-estimate of heredity, there has come into our work a new confidence based upon the teachings of science as to the priority of environment. Oppenheim says, "The human being, in the first part of his existence, is much more unformed than is generally thought. The determining factors are not as parents usually consider them." He adds that the effects of heredity are not settled facts, but that "the qualities of goodness and virtue are purely functional, the result of friction, social interaction, environment." This means that by supplying the right environing influences we may win and hold all the children we desire. Few subjects provoke so keen an interest as that of one's life work. The thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts. But there is danger in early selection and specialization before there is perspective. To be a vocational misfit is almost as tragic as to have no work at all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leaders of Youth: The Intermediate-Senior Worker and Work Efficiency in religious education through the Sunday school has developed upward from the lower grades. Most of our early American Sunday schools were "Infant Schools," so called. That is, their membership was composed principally of the younger children. The evangelical churches have been seriously engaged for a longer time at the task of religious education of children than of older boys and girls. As a result more real progress has been made and a higher degree of efficiency attained. Progress in secular education, also, during the past century has been most marked in the elementary grades. The whole development of the kindergarten in America has taken place within the past seventy-five years, and its influence upon elementary education has been revolutionary. This development has deeply influenced both the ideals and the practice of religious nurture in religious schools. Recent years have witnessed a marked awakening to the importance of the period of youth in religious education. The scientific study of adolescence has contributed to this interest. Accompanying the increased appreciation of the significance of adolescence for religion has come the realization of how slight a measure of success has accompanied the work of the Sunday school with boys and girls. The realization of the terrific losses in membership during the early teens has come as an accusing conscience, causing religious workers everywhere to inquire the explanation, to question prevailing methods of administration and of instruction, and to seek the better way. One of the first results of this inquiry has been the development of specialized method. Formerly all Sunday schools included all members of the school above the elementary grades in one mass assembly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many language books are boring—this one is not. Written by a native English speaker who learned Spanish the hard way—by trying to talk to Spanish-speaking people—it offers English speakers with a basic knowledge of Spanish hundreds of tips for using the language more fluently and colloquially, with fewer obvious "gringo" errors. Writing with humor, common sense, and a minimum of jargon, Joseph Keenan covers everything from pronunciation, verb usage, and common grammatical mistakes to the subtleties of addressing other people, "trickster" words that look alike in both languages, inadvertent obscenities, and intentional swearing. He guides readers through the set phrases and idiomatic expressions that pepper the native speaker's conversation and provides a valuable introduction to the most widely used Spanish slang. With this book, both students in school and adult learners who never want to see another classroom can rapidly improve their speaking ability. Breaking Out of Beginner's Spanish will be an essential aid in passing the supreme language test-communicating fluently with native speakers.

The new system is the result Of developments that have been in process for many years in the educational world. The principles of the new education have been recognized and followed in the public schools for a good while; their recognition in the Sunday-school has come tardily, but can not be any longer postponed. Book The Intermediate Manual

Download or read book The Intermediate Manual written by R. P. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Intermediate Manual: A Handbook of Methods for Intermediate and Young People's Society Workers Religious workers desire to make men and women oat of the material that they find in the community. The task is a difficult one at best, but its difficulties are immensely increased if workers plunge into their labors badly equipped and with only a vague idea of the means they are going to employ to attain their end. There is no excuse for Sunday-school workers remaining in ignorance of the work in which they are engaged. There are books a plenty dealing with the problem from every conceivable angle. But it is different with the Intermediate Christian Endeavor society. Here and there articles have appeared about it. Talks have been made about it at conventions. But no handbook which might serve superintendents as a guide has thus far been published. The Intermediate society is an instrument for the making of manhood and womanhood. The aim of the following pages is to give superintendents a working idea of methods to employ and of the nature of the young people with whom they will have to labor. Book The Management and the Worker Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Management and the Worker Classic Reprint written by George F. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Management and the Worker This book and its two companion volumes are designed to present a complete picture of the common problems that arise in handling human relations in any business, large or small. The method of treatment throughout is the one that seems logically suggested by the nature of the problem itself. Theory has been the approach in very many earlier volumes treating the same question, but the relations between employers and employees are today so practical, the points ordinarily at issue between them have been defined so often and so completely, and so much experience has accumulated in handling the problems, that the only satisfactory treatment today seems to be an analysis of methods actually being used and proving successful. This book is designed primarily for those who face the problems of employee management. Business today is a huge laboratory in which numerous intensely interesting industrial experiments are being tried. Some of these experiments are still in too early a stage to determine how well they may succeed, or whether they will succeed at all. Only in two or three instances have these been touched on in the present volume. There are many other plans, however, that have been thoroughly tried and their success proved by results. The bulk of this volume and its companion titles are made up of descriptions of the methods used in these concerns. Download or read book The Conscious Brain written by Jesse J. Prinz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-17 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of consciousness continues to be a subject of great debate in cognitive science. Synthesizing decades of research, The Conscious Brain advances a new theory of the psychological and neurophysiological correlates of conscious experience. Prinz's account of consciousness makes two main claims: first consciousness always arises at a particular stage of perceptual processing, the intermediate level, and, second, consciousness depends on attention. Attention changes the flow of information allowing perceptual information to access memory systems. Neurobiologically, this change in flow depends on synchronized neural firing. Neural synchrony is also implicated in the unity of consciousness and in the temporal duration of experience. Prinz also explores the limits of consciousness. We have no direct experience of our thoughts, no experience of motor commands, and no experience of a conscious self. All consciousness is perceptual, and it functions to make perceptual information available to systems that allows for flexible behavior. Prinz concludes by discussing prevailing philosophical puzzles. He provides a neuroscientifically grounded response to the leading argument for dualism, and argues that materialists need not choose between functional and neurobiological approaches, but can instead combine these into neurofunctional response to the mind-body problem. The Conscious Brain brings neuroscientific evidence to bear on enduring philosophical questions, while also surveying, challenging, and extending philosophical and scientific theories of consciousness. All readers interested in the nature of consciousness will find Prinz's work of great interest.
