Book excerpt: “With edge-of-your-seat suspense, Goodnight’s deliciously intricate series draws to a close . . . Many truths are slowly revealed as love overtakes regret.” —Library Journal (starred review) Welcome to Honey Ridge, Tennessee, where Southern hospitality and sweet peach tea beckon, and where long-buried secrets lead to some startling realizations . . . Grayson Blake always has a purpose—and never a moment to lose. He’s come home to Honey Ridge to convert a historic gristmill into a restaurant, but his plans crumble like Tennessee clay when the excavation of a skeleton unearths a Civil War mystery . . . and leads him back to a beautiful and familiar stranger. Once a ballet dancer, now co-owner of the Peach Orchard Inn, Valery Carter harbors pain as deep as the secrets buried beneath the mill. A bright facade can’t erase her regrets any more than a glass of bourbon can restore what she’s lost. But spending time with Grayson offers Valery a chance to let go of her past and imagine a happier future. And with the discovery of hidden messages in aged sheet music, both their hearts begin to open. Bound by attraction, and compelled to resolve an old crime that links the inn and the mill, Grayson and Valery encounter a song of hurt, truth . . . and hope. “Goodnight’s third Honey Ridge book blends past and present in another seamless tale that will touch the hearts of her readers.” —The Romance Dish

Book excerpt: Maud Demille is a daughter of Innkeepers—a special group who provide ‘lodging’ to other-planetary visitors—so she knows that a simple life isn't in the cards. But even Maud could never have anticipated what Fate would throw at her. Once a wife to a powerful vampire knight, Maud and her young daughter, Helen, were exiled with him for his treachery to the desolate, savage planet of Karhari. Karhari killed her husband, and Maud—completely abandoned by his family—has spent over a year avenging his debts. Rescued by her sister Dina, she's sworn off all things vampire. Except... In helping Dina save the world, she met Arland, the Marshal of House Krahr, one of the most powerful vampire houses. One thing led to another and he asked for her hand in marriage. She declined. Arland is not used to hearing the word ‘no;’ and try as she might, Maud can't just walk away from Arland. It doesn't help that being human is a lot harder for Maud than being a vampire. To sort it all out, she accepts his invitation to visit his home planet. House Krahr is extremely influential and Maud knows that a woman—a human, with a very questionable past—who's turned down a proposal from its most beloved son won't get a warm reception. Maybe she’s not sure about marrying Arland, but House Krahr isn’t going to decide for her. Maud Demille has never run from a fight, and House Krahr will soon discover that there's a lot more to Maud than they’re expecting.

Book excerpt: Many of the greatest stories in the Bible leave us yearning for more details. This author has written a story involving the family from the Bethlehem Inn during the year before the birth of Jesus. Jesus' birth brings about a dramatic change in the inkeeper's life, who is perhaps the first convert to Jesus. The year before Jesus is born in Bethlehem, Zaham the innkeeper hires a traveling builder to convert a feed storage room at the back of the inn to a secret room for his valuables. The oldest son, Jubal, is a traveling courier who comes upon a young woman alone at night on the road north of Bethsaida. her name is Kerith and she is the only member of an extended family to escape abduction by a band of Roman army deserters. This entire group travels by horseback east into the unknown toward Babylon, eventually bound for Egypt. Jubal and Kerith fall in love, marry and walk home to Bethlehem. They find lodging with a couple in Nazareth (Joseph and Mary), for two night. At home in Bethlehem Kerith is popular with all except Jubal's parents. by winter, Jubal reckons the band holding Kerith's family may cross the salt sea to the south heading west. he makes an excuse for business to leave home and travels south to the wells at Punon, the area's main water source south of the salt sea. He learns a band resembling the one he seeks passed by four days before. Jubal pursues the group on a camel and finally catches up to them days later at dusk. he attacks the enemy by cutting loose their tethered mounts and frightens them into stampeding over the camp of sleeping men. he frees Kerith's parents and the three of them and the camel begin walking north for Bethlehem. When Joseph and Mary arrive in Bethlehem for the census, Zaham refuses to even talk about a room for them. Kerith takes them to an animal shelter in a cave behind her house because her own house is full of travelers, some of whom are ill. Kerith makes them as comfortable as possible and calls in a midwife. The angel who first talked to Mary, then Joseph, appears to them and assures them all will be well and Jesus is born at that time. Meanwhile, Zaham had a bad day because of a promise by Johannan the census taker to reward him with extra money and a gold piece for the use of his secret room was cancelled due to a disagreement with a courtesan. She leaves Johanan abruptly, and Johanan leaves Bethlehem for Jerusalem. Zaham is beside himself with anger and self-pity. Sleepless, he decides to murder his family, commit suicide, and end everyone's misery at once. the angel appears to Zaham in his bedroom. He shows him the error of his ways and points out how all the things that he dislikes are actually projects that needed to be accomplished, including the secret room, for the safety of the holy family. Zaham finally sees the light and commits himself and his family to the well-being of Jesus' early years.

When Selah Ropp returns to Birch Creek, she is a different person than when she left. I know I haven’t done much listening in the past, Lord, she prays. But I’m listening now. Her new friend, Cevilla Schlabach, urges her to let go of regrets and allow this to be a fresh start. Cevilla herself, though, hides a secret longing behind her weathered face. Levi Stoll and his family spent a year transforming a large English house into a small inn. Now that they are open for business, Levi is pleased to have Selah join them as an employee—as long as his grandmother doesn’t try any matchmaking schemes on the two of them. After all, Selah seems as guarded as he feels, and the last thing he wants is for anyone to remind him of his history. With Kathleen Fuller’s trademark humor and memorable characters, The Innkeeper’s Bride reminds us that God’s grace in the present and our hope for the future is stronger than any pain of the past. Her father, Baldwin de Redvers, a knight for King Henry II and a well-known merchant, felt a nunnery was in his motherless daughter's best interest in the event he died in combat. Baldwin was encouraged by one of the most powerful men in the country, Chancellor Thomas Becket, to place his daughter, Idonea, in a nunnery. In later years when the chancellor became Archbishop of Canterbury and fled England to France in exile, now Sister Idonea had been called to his presence. She still felt hatred for this man whom she believed ruined her life. When she met with him, he asked a favor from her--a mission which was considered dangerous. Would Sister Idonea accept this mission? Sister Idonea met the archbishop on two further occasions--the last time to witness the most horrendous and sacrilegious murder in history.
