Book excerpt: American public schools have failed to provide the type of educational experiences that would increase the probability of success for the majority of African American and Hispanic students. On just about every metric of success Black and Brown students perform significantly below their white and Asian counterparts. A significant percentage of African American and Hispanic students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. The Coleman Report asserted that socioeconomics is a strong predictor of student success. However, there is a construct that has been tested and proven to also be a strong predictor of student achievement regardless of socioeconomics and prior achievement. Research shows that in spite of the many adverse environmental factors black and brown students often face in their neighborhoods and schools, teacher practices have the most impact on student performance. Using the lens of Hoy's academic optimism this proposed quantitative study seeks to examine the influence of gender, ethnicity, and years of experience on academic optimism, specifically in contexts with students of color. The construct of academic optimism involves a teacher's sense of self-efficacy, their level of trust in parents and students, and their level of academic emphasis. This study seeks to investigate the following questions: What are the effects of educators' gender, ethnicity, and years of experience on teachers' self-efficacy specifically in contexts with students of color? What are the effects of educators' gender, ethnicity, and years of experience on teachers' trust in students and parents specifically in contexts with students of color? What are the effects of educators' gender, ethnicity, and years of experience on teachers' academic emphasis specifically in contexts with students of color? What are the effects of educators' gender, ethnicity, and years of experience on teachers' total academic optimism specifically in contexts with students of color?

Book excerpt: In this dissertation, I explore the relations between student race/ethnicity, nativity, gender, and exceptionality, and I examine how school context shapes those relations. I argue that exceptionalities are socially constructed, and that different categories of exceptionality have different meanings and statuses. In the first empirical chapter, I use a factorial vignette survey to test for race/ethnicity, nativity, and gender effects in how teachers respond to children indicating academic and behavioral differences in the classroom. I found that boys of color were more likely to be suspected of exceptionality when they exhibit behavioral challenges. I argue that the category of emotional disorder, in particular, may maintain or exacerbate racial/ethnic inequalities in education. In the second empirical chapter, I use a dataset of Wisconsin public school students to test whether and how school racial/ethnic composition moderates the relationship between individual-race/ethnicity and placement in special education across the more subjective categories of disability. I find that white students who attend schools with more peers of color have increased risk of identification with more-advantaged disabilities, while students of color that attend schools with more same-race peers have decreased risk of placement in special education. These findings support explanations of frog-pond effects driven by racial/ethnic bias and also the mechanism of racial/ethnic competition. In the final empirical chapter, I use school-level racial composition data and an experimental survey design to examine whether a student's race/ethnicity, nativity, and gender affect teacher decisions to refer for exceptionality testing differently in schools with different racial/ethnic compositions. I find that in schools with more white students, teachers are less likely to perceive academic challenges as disability when evaluating a boy of color. While white boys experience decreased likelihood of referral for behavior problems in schools with more white students, boys of color experience no such decrease. Conversely, when they work in schools with more white students, teachers are more likely to refer girls of color when they have academic challenges, and less likely to refer when they have behavioral challenges. I argue that these findings suggest some support for contextual effects explained by racial-bias-driven frog- pond effects.

Book excerpt: Debates regarding the qualities, skills, and dispositions of culturally relevant teachers and teaching have raged in teacher education for several decades. Ladson-Billings’ (2009) The Dreamkeepers: Successful Teachers of African American Children was a groundbreaking work that has become a foundational study that informs the work of culturally-relevant (Ladson-Billings, 2009) and culturally-sustaining (Paris & Alim, 2017) teaching. In her book The Dreamkeepers she describes effective teachers who are able to draw from the cultural wealth, knowledges, and heritage of Black communities. The Dreamkeepers ensured that their Black students were academically successful, retained, and grew both in terms of their cultural competence and their sociopolitical awareness. In other words, according to research by Ladson-Billings (2009), effective teachers possessed both pedagogical and relational dispositions, which leave lifelong impacts on the academic and social lives of the students they teach. While being a foundational text, what remains missing from the research on culturally-relevant and even culturally-sustaining teachers are “narratives” (read: stories, testimonios, etc.) related to how the race of particular E–12 teachers positively impact the lives of their students. For instance, Dr. Antonio Ellis (the first editor of the proposed book) describes his high school music teacher Mr. Linard McCloud) as “a highly effective African American music educator who changed the course of his life” (p. 170). Ellis (2016) describes McCloud as being loving, caring, creative, culturally sensitive, attuned, hopeful, flexible, organized, and thoughtful. Because Mr. McCloud possessed the aforementioned characteristics and dispositions, Ellis contends that he was motivated to achieve academically and socially in his urban high school. In addition, according to Ellis (2016), Mr. McCloud was a highly impactful educator because he went beyond the call of duty as a teacher—a practice that is not so common in schools, particularly urban ones. Not only did McCloud teach in the classroom setting, but he also built strong relationships with families, community members, and external stakeholders including local businesses, colleges, and universities. Mr. McCloud used these networks to leverage opportunities for his students academically, personally, and professionally. Like many of his high school classmates, Ellis (2016) contends that he would not have graduated from high school if it were not for the care and mentorship he received from Mr. McCloud. In this proposed edited volume, it is the editors’ goal to honor teachers like Mr. McCloud who have made a difference in the lives of their students by learning from their impactful practices. Employing a “critical storytelling” methodology (see Hartlep & Hensley, 2015; Hartlep, Hensley, Braniger, & Jennings, 2017), each chapter contributor will use his or her own narrative to show the power of influential teachers in classrooms. While this framework centers race, lived and learned experiences, the storyteller is the most important unit of narrative; hence, The Impact of Classroom Practices: Reflections on Culturally Relevant Teachers will include African-American storytellers who reflect on the impact of classroom practices of teachers from diverse backgrounds who they deemed culturally relevant and responsive to both their academic and social needs. This work will offer recommendations to pre-service teachers and in-service teachers who desire to leave a lasting impact on the students they teach.

Discussion of such are threaded throughout this book. Mentoring has been a practice of leadership since Greek times, and research has documented the advantages of mentoring. Aligned with the authors espoused mentoring perspectives in this book, is the coined concept of “synergistic mentoring” Accordingly, “Synergistic mentoring is defined as a mentor and mentee working together collaboratively to (a) generate a greater good for both, (b) integrate diverse perspectives into the context, and (c) construct together an otherwise unattainable goal attempted independently. The authors of this book seek to enlighten, dynamic and critical discussions by and about women of color in the academy. Conceivably the most intriguing part of each chapter is the methodological approaches used to address race, gender, and social justice in the academy. Qualitative methods dominate the chapters with effective use of personal narratives and the lived experiences of the participants. The voices of those often ignored or forgotten are examined building on the legacy of women of color in the academy who paved the way for this generation and future scholars of color. Moreover, the chapters presented herein challenge assumptions, perspectives and beliefs about the significance of women of color scholars in the academy. They are provocative and provide direction for future research that advance knowledge and understanding for a better society based on social justice, equity and equal opportunity. They also give voice to both the shared diverse and common experiences of this group of women scholars of color and provide useful guidance and new perspectives on transforming the world’s academics into more inclusive and equitable environments around the globe (Thomas & Hollenshead, 2001). Ultimately, outcomes from these collections of scholarly discourse, may have important implications for effective policy and program practice that raise important questions about institutional commitments that advocate for the advancement of women of color in the academy.

Researchers continue to pursue this question with vigor not only because Blacks currently lag behind Whites on a wide variety of educational indices but because the closing of the Black-White achievement gap has slowed and by some measures reversed during the last quarter of the 20th century. The social implications of the persistent educational 'gap' between Blacks and Whites are substantial. Black people's experience with poor school achievement and equally poor access to postsecondary education reduces their probability for achieving competitive economic and social rewards and are inconsistent with repeated evidence that Black people articulate high aspirations for their own educational and social mobility. Despite the social needs that press us towards making better sense of 'the gap,' we are, nevertheless, limited in our understanding of how race operates to affect Black students' educational experiences and outcomes. In Beyond Acting White we contend with one of the most oft cited explanations for Black underachievement; the notion that Blacks are culturally opposed to 'acting White' and, therefore, culturally opposed to succeeding in school. Our book uses the 'acting White' hypothesis as the point of departure in order to explore and evaluate how and under what conditions Black culture and identity are implicated in our understanding of why Black students continue to lag behind their White peers in educational achievement and attainment. Beyond Acting White provides a response to the growing call that we more precisely situate how race, its representations, intersectionalities, and context specific contingencies help us make better sense of the Black-White achievement gap.

Book excerpt: Our study uses a unique national longitudinal survey, the National Educational Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS), which permits researchers to match individual students and teachers, to analyze issues relating to how a teacher's race, gender, and ethnicity, per se, influence students from both the same and different race, gender, and ethnic groups. In contrast to much of the previous literature, we focus both on how teachers subjectively relate to and evaluate their students and on objectively how much their students learn. On balance, we find that teachers' race, gender, and ethnicity, per se, are much more likely to influence teachers' subjective evaluations of their students than they are to influence how much the students objectively learn. For example, while white female teachers do not appear to be associated with larger increases in test scores for white female students in mathematics and science than white male teachers 'produce', white female teachers do have higher subjective evaluations than their white male counterparts of their white female students. We relate our findings to the more general literature on gender, race, and ethnic bias in subjective performance evaluations in the world of work and trace their implications for educational and labor markets.

Using narrative methodologies, the authors explore the connections and consistencies within and between their personal narratives and the narratives of school youth and educators that work with them.
