Book The Influence of Dissolved Organic Carbon DOC and Calcium on the Toxicity of Copper and Nickel to the Freshwater Alga Selenastrum Capricornutum and the Zooplankter Daphnia Magna

Download or read book The Influence of Dissolved Organic Carbon DOC and Calcium on the Toxicity of Copper and Nickel to the Freshwater Alga Selenastrum Capricornutum and the Zooplankter Daphnia Magna written by Ucu Rahayu and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The toxicity of copper and nickel was measured in algal cultures of Selenastrum capricornutum and zooplankton cultures of Daphnia magna to determine if dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and/or calcium concentrations can influence toxicity of these two metals. Water samples were collected from the Raisin River (high DOC and high calcium), the St. Lawrence River (low DOC and high calcium), the Ottawa River (medium DOC and calcium) as well as two lakes in Nova Scotia. The concentration sufficient to kill half the population of Daphnia magna after 48h of exposure (LC50), and the inhibition of cell growth of S. capricornutum after 72 h of exposure (IC50) were used to determine the sensitivity of these species to copper or nickel toxicity in these 5 water samples. In Part 3, I showed that the protection against copper or nickel toxicity was reduced with UVB radiation even though the total DOC was reduced by only 18%. The role of EDTA in the toxicity of copper and nickel on S. capricornutum was investigated in part 4. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Book Effects of Dissolved Organic Matter and Salinity on the Toxicity of Individual and Metal Mixtures of Copper with Zinc and Silver to the Saltwater Rotifer Brachionus Plicatilis

Download or read book Effects of Dissolved Organic Matter and Salinity on the Toxicity of Individual and Metal Mixtures of Copper with Zinc and Silver to the Saltwater Rotifer Brachionus Plicatilis written by Claire Elizabeth Saunders and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was conducted to fill the gaps in understanding of the influence of salinity and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) on the acute toxicity of individual metals (silver, copper, zinc) and their mixtures to the saltwater rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. Forty-eight-hour static-acute toxicity tests were conducted at three salinity levels (4, 14, 26 g/L salinity) and a constant DOC level. Fortyeight-hour static-acute toxicity tests were also conducted testing individual metals at constant salinity (14 g/L) and varying DOC levels (1.4, 5.0, 10.0 mg C/L). Metal toxicity was also evaluated using a toxicity unit approach to determine if additive, synergistic, or antagonistic mechanisms occurred when exposed to bimetal mixtures. The effects salinity has on metal toxicity were mixed and depended on the exposure time and metal. Increases in DOC decreased metal toxicity in the majority of treatments. Finally, over 90% of the metal treatments indicated antagonistic or additive effects when in mixture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The indiscriminate use of medications and their inadequate disposal have resulted in them being released into the environment via municipal, hospital and industrial discharges. This volume critically examines the presence of pharmaceuticals in aquatic ecosystems, the hazards they entail, and how to minimize their impact on the environment. The topics covered include: historical findings that have made the development of the discipline ecopharmacovigilance possible; the main exposure routes, fate and life cycle of pharmaceuticals in water; occurrence data and the impact on biodiversity; methods used for the detection, analysis and quantification of pharmaceuticals in water and for their removal; current legislation on the presence of emerging contaminants in water; biosensors for environmental analysis and monitoring; and the measures needed to reduce the existing problems. This book is aimed at students, academics and research workers in the fields of toxicology, ecology, microbiology and chemistry, as well as those in the pharmaceutical industry, health sector professionals, and members of government bodies involved in environmental protection and legislation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have now been published in the broad field of environmental toxicology. However, to date, none of have presented the often fascinating stories of the wildlife science, and the steps along the way from discovery of problems caused by environmental pollutants to the regulatory and non-regulatory efforts to address the problems. This book provides case by case examinations of how toxic chemical effects on wildlife have brought about policy and regulatory decisions, and positive changes in environmental conditions. Wild animal stories, whether they are about the disappearance of charismatic top predators, or of grossly deformed embryos or frogs, provide powerful symbols that can and have captured the public's imagination and have resulted in increased awareness by decision makers. It is the intent of this book to present factual and balanced overviews and summaries of the science and the subsequent regulatory processes that followed to effect change (or not). We cover a variety of chemicals and topics beginning with an update of the classic California coastal DDT story of eggshell thinning and avian reproduction to more recent cases, such as the veterinarian pharmaceutical that has brought three species of Asian vultures to the brink of extinction. Researchers, regulators, educators, NGOs and the general public will find valuable insights into the processes and mechanisms involved both in environmental scientific investigation and in efforts to effect positive change.
