Book excerpt: As distance education grows increasingly popular, higher educational institutions are finding it more challenging to retain this population than face-to-face students. Academic coaching has emerged as a possible technique for improving retention among distance education students. In this study, the researcher conducted an interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) through three semi-structured interviews with four undergraduate distance education students. The purpose of the study was to explore how undergraduate, distance education students experienced academic coaching provided by a private coaching company and how they perceived it to influence their retention. Ultimately, each interviewee felt that their academic coach contributed to their ability to be retained, which led the researcher to conclude that academic coaching can be an effective and powerful retention tool for distance education students.

Academic coaching can be implemented to reduce stress experienced by nursing students and aid students in attaining successful academic outcomes and a positive educational experience. The purpose of this descriptive comparative and correlational study was to explore the impact of academic coaching on junior-level baccalaureate nursing students’ perceived stress, students’ perceptions of the coaching relationship, the relationship between perceptions of the coaching relationship and perceived level of student stress, and the impact of academic coaching on students’ perceptions of academic success. Faculty coaches and student participants met bi-weekly for one academic semester. Students’ perceived stress was measured pre- and post-coaching. Student perceptions of the coaching experience and perceptions of the influence of academic coaching on academic success were evaluated post coaching. Survey data was analyzed to identify associations between academic coaching and perceived stress and student perceptions of the coaching relationship. Examination of survey data included analysis of themes and similarities between student perceptions of academic coaching and its influence on perceived academic success. Correlational data analysis was used to identify relationships between student perceptions of academic coaching and perceived stress. Students had positive perceptions of the coaching relationship and the majority of students perceived academic coaching as contributing to and/or influencing academic success. There was no significant change in perceived student stress after academic coaching. The relationship of students’ perceptions of the coaching relationship and level of stress was not statistically significant. The results of this research study broaden understanding of the impact of academic coaching on nursing students and potential interventions to assist nursing students to have a positive educational experience.

Book excerpt: This study examines how academic coaching influenced at-risk college students academic performance. Academic coaching places one student with a trained academic coach, who attempts to outline an academic plan with the student. The student contracts with the academic coach and they meet biweekly to assess progress and to discuss experiences and issues. Such an intervention was performed in the fall 2016 semester at a southern, urban, public university (Center for Academic Retention and Enrichment Services [CARES], 2017). One way to examine academic coaching as an intervention and to determine efficacy is to measure students sense of grit, academic self-efficacy, academic commitment, and time management before and after an academic coaching intervention. This researcher used archival data provided by the Office of Institutional Research (2018) and from the academic coaching program at the study university in the form of a questionnaire provided to students both before the coaching intervention and again at the end of the intervention. This researcher proposed that the scores would show an increase in these areas and the set of variables might serve to predict GPA. This researcher used t-tests and multiple linear regression to analyze the data. Significant differences were found between pre-test and post-test scores of academic self-efficacy and those of academic commitment. Both variables exhibited a significant decline in the mean scores following the academic coaching intervention. There was also a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the GPA measurements of the intervention term (Fall 2016), exhibiting an increase in GPA. Additionally, there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the academic year GPA (Fall 2016 to Spring 2017) exhibiting an increase in GPA. The regression model using the change scores between Fall 2016 intervention term GPA as the initial dependent variable, and difference scores of grit, academic self-efficacy, academic commitment, and time management as independent variables, was not significant. The second regression model using the change scores of Spring 2017 GPA and Fall 2016 GPA as the dependent variable with difference scores of grit, self-efficacy, academic commitment, and time management as independent variables, was not significant..

Book excerpt: To boost college graduation rates, policymakers often advocate for academic supports such as coaching or mentoring. Proactive and intensive coaching interventions are effective, but are costly and difficult to scale. We evaluate a relatively lower-cost group coaching program targeted at first-year college students placed on academic probation. Participants attend a workshop where coaches aim to normalize failure and improve self-confidence. Coaches also facilitate a process whereby participants reflect on their academic difficulties, devise solutions to address their challenges, and create an action plan. Participants then hold a one-time follow-up meeting with their coach or visit a campus resource. Using a difference-in-discontinuity design, we show that the program raises students’ first-year GPA by 14.6 percent of a standard deviation, and decreases the probability of first-year dropout by 8.5 percentage points. Effects are concentrated among lower-income students who also experience a significant increase in the probability of graduating. Finally, using administrative data, we provide the first evidence that coaching/mentoring may have substantial long-run effects, as we document significant gains in lower-income students’ earnings seven to nine years following entry to the university. Our findings indicate that targeted, group coaching can be an effective way to improve marginal students’ academic and early career outcomes.

Although there are many studies on interventions that serve college students, there is a lack of empirical studies on academically at-risk students and the impact of academic coaching for this population. The purpose of this research is to explore approaches implemented by American universities in academic coaching, their effectiveness in serving first-year at-risk students, and common characteristics among academically at-risk students. This exploratory quantitative study surveyed a convenience sample of 13 university employees that oversee academic coaching. Descriptive analyses show that various approaches were used in academic coaching, leading to overall increased student academic performance. The findings show self-regulation and strength-based perspective are the most impactful in increasing academic performance resulting in higher GPA scores and retaining at the institution. However, characteristics among academically at-risk students continue to vary among different universities. Further investigation is needed to validate these findings using an experimental study with a representative sample.
