Book The Principles of Forest Yield Study

Download or read book The Principles of Forest Yield Study written by Ernst Assmann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Principles of Forest Yield Study: Studies in the Organic Production, Structure, Increment and Yield of Forest Stands reviews the progress that has been made in the field of forest yield studies, especially those concerning the organic production, structure, increment, and yield of forest stands. Topics covered include woody growth as part of the total produce of plant societies; growth and form of forest trees; constitution and development of stands; and forest stand structure, increment, and yield in relation to silvicultural treatment. This book is divided into five sections and begins with an overview of the history of forest yield studies, as well as the place of forest yield theory in forest science. Research objectives and methods employed in forest yield studies are outlined. The discussion then turns to the interactions between soil, climate and plant production; the social structure of tree crops; growth performance of tree crops in relation to site; and disturbances in the normal trend of increment. The use of fertilizers for amelioration and treatment of forest soils are discussed from the standpoint of yield studies. This monograph will be a useful resource for practitioners in forestry, the natural sciences, plant physiology, soil science, and meteorology.

Book Thinning of Scots Pine and Norway Spruce Monocultures in Sweden

Download or read book Thinning of Scots Pine and Norway Spruce Monocultures in Sweden written by Urban Nilsson and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of thinning intensity, thinning interval, thinning form and timing of the first thinning on stand level gross- and net stem volume production in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) was investigated in a nationwide field experiment across Sweden. In total, 35 Scots pine sites distributed from the south to the north of Sweden and 13 Norway spruce sites located in the south and central parts of Sweden were investigated. Thinning treatments ranged from unthinned control, to light and moderate repeated thinnings, to a treatment where 60-70% of the basal area was removed in a single thinning. In addition, thinning from above was compared to thinning from below and delayed first thinning was compared to early first thinning. The average measurement period was 31 years for Scots pine and 30 years for Norway spruce. All Scots pine thinning treatments reduced the total gross stem volume production compared to the unthinned control, whereas only the heaviest thinning treatments, in which a large proportion of the basal area was removed, reduced the total gross stem volume production for Norway spruce. Thinning from above did not affect total gross stem volume production of Scots pine, but there was a tendency towards lower production in Norway spruce. For Norway spruce, thinning from above resulted in lower net stem volume production than thinning from below. Delaying the first thinning did not affect gross stem volume production for either Scots pine or Norway spruce. Net volume production and volume production in trees with diameter at breast height> 8 cm was higher for the light thinning treatment than for the unthinned control in Norway spruce. In Scots pine, there was no difference between the light thinning treatment and unthinned control in net volume production. For cots pine, the heavy thinning treatments decreased net volume production compared to the unthinned threatment whereas there were no differences in net volume production between the heavy thinning treatments and unthinned control in Norway spruce.

Book Mixed Species Forests

Download or read book Mixed Species Forests written by Hans Pretzsch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-10 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook offers a detailed overview of the current state of knowledge concerning the ecology and management of compositionally and structurally diverse forests. It provides answers to central questions such as: What are the scientific concepts used to assess the growth, dynamics and functioning of mixed-species forests, how generalizable are they, and what kind of experiments are necessary to develop them further? How do mixed-species stands compare with monocultures in relation to productivity, wood quality, and ecological stability in the face of stress and disturbances? How are the effects of species mixtures on ecosystem functioning influenced by the particular species composition, site conditions, and stand structure? How does any over- or underyielding at the forest-stand level emerge from the tree and organ level, and what are the main mechanisms behind mixing effects? How can our current scientific understanding of mixed-species forests be integrated into silvicultural concepts as well as practical forest management and planning? Do the ecological characteristics of mixed-species stands also translate into economic differences between mixtures and monocultures? In addition, the book addresses experimental designs and analytical approaches to study mixed-species forests and provides extensive empirical information, general concepts, models, and management approaches for mixed-species forests. As such, it offers a valuable resource for students, scientists and educators, as well as professional forest planners, managers, and consultants.
