Book Revelations

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elaine Pagels
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2012-03-06
  • ISBN : 110157707X
  • Pages : 253 pages

Download or read book Revelations written by Elaine Pagels and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A startling exploration of the history of the most controversial book of the Bible, by the bestselling author of Beyond Belief. Through the bestselling books of Elaine Pagels, thousands of readers have come to know and treasure the suppressed biblical texts known as the Gnostic Gospels. As one of the world's foremost religion scholars, she has been a pioneer in interpreting these books and illuminating their place in the early history of Christianity. Her new book, however, tackles a text that is firmly, dramatically within the New Testament canon: The Book of Revelation, the surreal apocalyptic vision of the end of the world . . . or is it? In this startling and timely book, Pagels returns The Book of Revelation to its historical origin, written as its author John of Patmos took aim at the Roman Empire after what is now known as "the Jewish War," in 66 CE. Militant Jews in Jerusalem, fired with religious fervor, waged an all-out war against Rome's occupation of Judea and their defeat resulted in the desecration of Jerusalem and its Great Temple. Pagels persuasively interprets Revelation as a scathing attack on the decadence of Rome. Soon after, however, a new sect known as "Christians" seized on John's text as a weapon against heresy and infidels of all kinds-Jews, even Christians who dissented from their increasingly rigid doctrines and hierarchies. In a time when global religious violence surges, Revelations explores how often those in power throughout history have sought to force "God's enemies" to submit or be killed. It is sure to appeal to Pagels's committed readers and bring her a whole new audience who want to understand the roots of dissent, violence, and division in the world's religions, and to appreciate the lasting appeal of this extraordinary text.

Book The Bioarchaeology of Artificial Cranial Modifications

Download or read book The Bioarchaeology of Artificial Cranial Modifications written by Vera Tiesler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-16 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The artificial shaping of the skull vault of infants expresses fundamental aspects of crafted beauty, of identity, status and gender in a way no other body practice does. Combining different sources of information, this volume contributes new interpretations on Mesoamerican head shaping traditions. Here, the head with its outer insignia was commonly used as a metaphor for designating the “self” and personhood and, as part of the body, served as a model for the indigenous universe. Analogously, the outer “looks” of the head and its anatomical constituents epitomized deeply embedded worldviews and longstanding traditions. It is in this sense that this book explores both the quotidian roles and long-standing ideological connotations of cultural head modifications in Mesoamerica and beyond, setting new standards in the discussion of the scope, caveats, and future directions involved in this study. The systematic examination of Mesoamerican skeletal series fosters an explained review of indigenous cultural history through the lens of emblematic head models with their nuanced undercurrents of religious identity and ethnicity, social organization and dynamic cultural shift. The embodied expressions of change are explored in different geocultural settings and epochs, being most visible in the centuries surrounding the Maya collapse and following the cultural clash implied by the European conquest. These glimpses on the Mesoamerican past through head practices are novel, as is the general treatment of methodology and theoretical frames. Although it is anchored in physical anthropology and archaeology (specifically bioarchaeology), this volume also integrates knowledge derived from anatomy and human physiology, historical and iconographic sources, linguistics (polisemia) and ethnography. The scope of this work is rounded up by the transcription and interpretation of the many colonial eye witness accounts on indigenous head treatments in Mesoamerica and beyond.

Book 20 000 Miles South

Download or read book 20 000 Miles South written by Helen Schreider and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helen and Frank Schreider were true adventurers. Their dream was to drive the length of the Americas, from the town of Circle, Alaska (just outside the Arctic Circle), to the world’s southernmost town, Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego. Dinah, their German shepherd, went with them. They are the first people in history to have made this trip. They came back with a whale of a story. The seagoing and mountain-climbing abilities of their amphibious jeep, La Tortuga, were put to a rugged test during the eighteen thrill-packed months the Schreiders were under way. They didn’t just drive from Circle to Ushuaia—much of the way there are no roads. Many of the rivers that slice through the jungle are unbridged; the jungle itself often rears up in an impenetrable wall, and the natives just shake their heads and say, “Turn back.” Undaunted, the Schreiders hacked their way with machetes through the steaming jungles of southern Mexico, were forced to put out through the monstrous surf into the far from pacific Pacific, island-hopped across the reef-ribbed Caribbean, rode out a hurricane at sea, and crawled to almost sixteen thousand feet in the Peruvian Andes. They are the first to have reached South America in a wheeled vehicle under its own power. La Tortuga served them well and came away with her share of honors: she’s the first “ship” ever to have been weighed in on dry land for passage through the Panama Canal and to have driven up to the port captain’s door to pick up her pilot. 20,000 MILES SOUTH is a book filled with the happy glow of discovery, the ease, charm, and determination of its young authors, and the fascinations and romance of faraway places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you’re eleven years old, it’s tough convincing people to take you seriously. When you’re an eleven-year-old savant, It’s exponentially more difficult. Since Jake’s inability to connect with others had made him somewhat of an outcast for most of his life, he’d learned to divert his energy into his artistic talent, creating mesmerizing images capable of literally paralyzing anyone who should gaze upon them. For Jake, it was normal to see and perceive things others were incapable of recognizing, but even he was caught completely off-guard when confronted with the reality that dragons not only exist, but that one of them was destined to become his very own. As the bond between Jake and his dragon evolves and deepens, it becomes increasingly difficult to explain the uncanny occurrences which seem to accompany them, all while keeping the very existence of his dragon a secret. While most people accept the logical explanations for the unusual activities surrounding them, dragoneers are not most people and they are dead set on capturing Jake’s dragon.

Book Corpus Based Approaches to Metaphor and Metonymy

Download or read book Corpus Based Approaches to Metaphor and Metonymy written by Anatol Stefanowitsch and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume deal with the issue of how corpus data relate to the questions that cognitive linguists have typically investigated with respect to conceptual mappings. The authors in this volume investigate a wide range of issues - the coherence and function of particular metaphorical models, the interaction of form and meaning, the identification of source domains of metaphorical expressions, the relationship between metaphor and discourse, the priming of metaphors, and the historical development of metaphors. The studies deal with a variety of metaphorical and metonymic source and target domains, including the source domains SPACE, ANIMALS, BODY PARTS, ORGANIZATIONS and WAR, and the target domains VERBAL ACTIVITY, ECONOMY, EMOTIONS and POLITICS. In their studies, the authors present a variety of corpus-linguistic methods for the investigation of conceptual mappings, for example, corpora annotated for semantic categories, concordances of individual source-domain items and patterns, and concordances of target-domain items. In sum, the papers in this volume show how a wide range of corpus-linguistic methods can be used to investigate a variety of issues in cognitive linguistics; the combination of corpus methods with a cognitive-linguistic view of metaphor and metonymy yields new answers to old questions (and to new questions) about the relationship between language as a conceptual phenomenon and language as a textual phenomenon.
