To be flipper-slapped by a bird whose wings are powerful enough to propel it swiftly through frigid waters? Sophie Webb knows, and she gives readers a frank firsthand account of what it is like to spend a season in a land not yet affected by humans, yet populated for centuries by true dwellers of the Antarctic—the fearless, round-bellied, pink-footed, waddling, diving, utterly adept Adélie penguins.

  • Author : Eugene Rodgers
  • Publisher : Naval Institute Press
  • Release : 2012-04-15
  • ISBN : 1612511880
  • Pages : 589 pages

Download or read book Beyond the Barrier written by Eugene Rodgers and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2012-04-15 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this book originally appeared in 1990, it was hailed as an important new work because of the author's access to Adm. Richard E. Byrd's just-released private papers. Previous books on the legendary polar explorer had to rely on sources subject to the admiral's vigilant censorship or the control of his heirs and friends. With this study Eugene Rodgers provides a scrupulously honest and objective account of Byrd's 1929 expedition to Antarctica. Without discrediting the expedition's success or Byrd's leadership, Rodgers shows that the admiral was not the saintly hero he and the press depicted. Nor was the expedition without its problems. Interviews with surviving members of the expedition together with a wealth of other new material indicate that Byrd, contrary to his claims, was not a good navigator--his pilots usually had to find their way by dead reckoning--and that he was not on the actual flight that discovered Marie Byrd Land. The book further reveals a crisis over drunkenness among the men (including Byrd), the admiral's fear of mutiny, and his rewriting of news stories from the pole to embellish his own image.

Book The Antarctic Journal of a Sailor on Operation Windmill 1947 48

Download or read book The Antarctic Journal of a Sailor on Operation Windmill 1947 48 written by Edward W. Koenig and published by Author House. This book was released on 2007-02-23 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book Antarctic Journal a Seaman’s Record from 1947 contains the day-to-day observations of a young sailor assigned in 1947 to his first cruise, which was an historic expedition to map and study over twenty locations along the coast of Antarctica. "Project Windmill" was the first all-icebreaker task force after World War II, and was a follow-up to the Admiral Byrd led “Operation Highjump” in 1946. As an Electronic Technician Mr. Koenig was in the center of the communications activity, and had access to information not always available to most of the crew. The narrative begins with an unpleasant start over rough seas and travel to the South Pacific island of American Samoa. Upon crossing the equator the description of the Pollywog to Shellback initiation is one of the best yet, as stated by the librarian at the Navy Library. Two months below the Antarctic Circle includes suspense from a missing helicopter to adventures at the early American camps at McMurdo Sound, Little America and Byrd’s East Base. A rough crossing past Cape Horn and a visit to Lima, Peru added interest to the adventure. The story is told just as recorded, and supported with many illustrations from his personal camera’s 2 x 2 inch pictures and several quality images from the ship’s photo shop and the Navy Library.

Book The Antarctic A Very Short Introduction

Download or read book The Antarctic A Very Short Introduction written by Klaus Dodds and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Antarctic is one the most hostile natural environments in the world. It is an extraordinary physical space, which changes significantly in shape and size with the passing of the seasons. Politically, it is unique as it contains one of the few areas of continental space not claimed by any nation-state. Scientifically, the continental ice sheet has provided us with vital evidence about the Earth's past climate. In this Very Short Introduction, Klaus Dodds provides a modern account of Antarctica, highlighting the main issues facing the continent today. Looking at how the Antarctic has been explored and represented in the last hundred years, Dodds considers the main exploratory and scientific achievements of the region. He explains how processes such as globalization mean that the Antarctic is increasingly involved in a wider circuit of ideas, goods, people, trade, and governance - all of which have an impact on the future of the region. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
