Book The Impact of Publicy funded Single gender Learning Environments on Sixth Grade Male Academic Performance

Download or read book The Impact of Publicy funded Single gender Learning Environments on Sixth Grade Male Academic Performance written by Dameion J. Crook and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study compares two educational models to investigate whether differences exist in academic achievement among boys in single- gender model and those in a traditional co-gender model. Specifically, the study analyzed archival data from the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness to ascertain the efficacy of single-sex education for middle school boys. A quantitative comparative research design was chosen to compare the student achievement outcomes between two educational models to determine if the single-gender model offers advantages over the traditional co-educational model. The study utilized numerical datasets archival data consisting of the STAAR reading and STAAR math scores of student samples at two different school models: one sample comprised of minority males attending a single-sex publicly-funded middle school and another sample comprised of minority males attending a traditional co- gender publicly-funded middle schools. The study results, affirm that students attending a single-sex school fared better academically than their peers educated in co-gender learning environments, are consistent with the research of Brown (2008), which evaluated the academic outcomes of a specific group of students after they were separated into single-sex classes, although in the same school, and compared their academic performance with their peers that remained in co- gender classes. The result: students in the single-sex classes excelled over their peers that remained in the co-gender classes, even to the extent that students who had been academically unsuccessful in the past became very successful in the single-sex environment and test stores showed drastic improvement. This research study is essential because it examines a relatively new academic model in public education. It is widely held that separating boys from girls into single-sex learning environments is the best way to meet the unique academic needs and improve the educational outcomes of both groups. A focus on the impact of publicly funded single- sex learning environments is especially important considering that the number of single- sex public schools is on the rise in the United States and that they are most often developed as a means to target and address the low academic performance of minority males.

Book Gender Segregated Learning Environments

Download or read book Gender Segregated Learning Environments written by Paul Gleason and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educating male and female students in separate learning environments has been a common practice since the early inception of educational programs. However, this practice was heavily debated in the 20th century for its perceived inequalities in the treatment of students based on their gender resulting in today's coeducational classroom structure. Recently, interest in single-sex classrooms returned as an alternative for educating America's youth. Political support for this educational approach was evident in modifications to the 2006, No Child Left Behind Act which in turn led to increased availability and popularity of this educational venue. Despite same-sex classrooms' acceptance, research results on the effectiveness of single-sex classrooms have been mixed contributing to inconclusive findings that do little to support the use of public funds for such initiatives. The purpose of this research is the analysis of data to clarify the outcomes of single-sex classroom environments and their effects on students. South Carolina Department of Education survey results (2008) were examined using ANOVA analysis to identify differences in the group means between the male and female students and regression analysis was used to test the influence of the control (independent) variables on the dependent variables. The statistical analysis did not find significant differences in how the single-sex classrooms impact males and females in terms of academic achievement. However, motivation and self-esteem were found to have significant differences for male and female students in single-sex classrooms. Notably the analysis results indicated 4th, 5th, and 6th grade levels demonstrated the greatest disparities between the genders. Regression results highlighted the inability of the independent (control) variables of grade level, gender, or ethnicity in explaining the variation in any of the dependent variables, failing to confirm the model used in analysis. Likewise, grade level was generally found to have a greater impact than gender or ethnicity on the academic achievement, motivation and self-esteem dependent variables. It is recommended that additional research be conducted to further consider these variables and their effects on students utilizing a wider range of control (independent) variables.

Book The Effect of Single Gender Education on the Achievement of Sixth Grade Mathematics Students

Download or read book The Effect of Single Gender Education on the Achievement of Sixth Grade Mathematics Students written by Rhonda Lee Hill and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact on students' academic achievement when served with a single-gender instructional model. Sixth grade students enrolled in single-gender classes were compared to heterogeneous classes utilizing the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP). MAP data from the fall and spring administrations were evaluated to determine academic growth. In the analysis of growth in academic achievement between groups based upon MAP scores, there was no significant difference found between academic growth and gender. While there was group variability that may have impacted achievement scores, overall growth of MAP scores and the amount of achievement was not significant at the .05 level. With all student groups achieving gains, educational setting and academic growth may be simply a matter of individual learning style and preference. Future studies should focus on longitudinal patterns of student growth, corroboration of multiple sources of data, such as student grades and additional test scores, and student perspectives of single-gender classes.

Book Experiences of Boys in a Single Gender Military Style High School Educational Environment

Download or read book Experiences of Boys in a Single Gender Military Style High School Educational Environment written by Jefferey Warren Chandler and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an effort to improve academic achievement and student performance, some school systems across the United States are starting to consider some form of single-gender education. As many school systems have considered single-gender classes, previous research on single-gender education has focused on its effect on academic achievement. Other research has focused on adverse student behavior in the classroom. One area of single-gender education not addressed in previous research is the experience of boys in a single-gender, military-style high school educational environment from the lens of those in that environment. The purpose of this multiple-case study was to describe the experiences of boys in a single-gender, military-style high school educational environment. This research examined data collected through interviews, surveys, focus groups discussions, and participant journaling of 40 male students who participated in a single-gender, military-style high school environment. An analysis of the data revealed that the students perceived relationships and the structured environment as most impacting their experience in the single-gender, military-style educational environment.

Book The Effects of Single sex Education on Student Math Performance in Public Middle Schools

Download or read book The Effects of Single sex Education on Student Math Performance in Public Middle Schools written by Duane Kenneth Eliason and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: In this study, class design (single-sex math classes compared to coeducational math classes) was examined as an alternative method that could potentially improve middle school students' math performance. The study examined single-sex classes as a method of reducing adolescent developmental issues that may negatively impact knowledge development in social learning environments. The social, collaborative learning environments of public middle schools provide an academic atmosphere that highlights Bandura's social cognitive theory of reciprocal determinism. This study identified triadic reciprocal factors within the social learning environment of public middle schools that could negatively impact learning. These factors included (a) personal factors, (b) behavioral factors, and (c) environmental factors. The singlesex class design was expected to serve two functions: (a) create a supportive learning environment that emphasized communication, interaction, and participation within a supportive, harassment-free educational setting (Parker & Rennie, 2002), and (b) reduce individual and social adolescent development factors which may negatively affect learning in public middle schools. The results indicate that class design as it relates to single-sex math classes and coeducational math classes, under these specific learning conditions, appear to have little effect on reducing negative adolescent development factors related to mathematical knowledge development. Analyses of the results from a general perspective indicate that single-sex math classes and coeducational math classes are equally beneficial in promoting academic achievement.

Book GENDER BASED EDUCATION THE PILOT YEAR OF SINGLE GENDER CLASSES AT A PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Download or read book GENDER BASED EDUCATION THE PILOT YEAR OF SINGLE GENDER CLASSES AT A PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires public schools to be highly accountable for dollars spent on education and for the achievement of students. To support this mandate, the law expanded local control and allowed schools to explore innovative ways to enhance student learning (U.S.D.E., 2004). Given the opportunity, some public schools have experimented with single-gender classes as an avenue for improving the way students are taught. Studies have indicated that separating students according to gender has a positive impact on learning (e.g., Haag, 2000; Maslen, 2001; and Sommers, 2001). Single-gender settings have also been reported to have a positive affect on the attitudes of students (NASSPE, 2004b; Colley et al., 1994, James & Richards, 2003; and Rowe, 2000). Because single-gender classes were not an option in the public school sector in recent years, most current studies of single-gender education involve private and parochial schools. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the initial impact of implementing gender-based instruction in a suburban public elementary school in central Mississippi. The impact was analyzed in terms of the overall perceptions of the administrator, teachers, students, and parents who participated in the pilot program. The impact was also measured by the students' performance in the areas of academic achievement, school attendance, and classroom behavior during the pilot year of fifth-grade, single-gender classes. The results of the study indicated the overall perceptions of the participants were favorable toward single-gender classes. The students maintained approximately the same level of academic achievement in fifth-grade, single-gender classes as in fourth-grade coeducational classes. They produced an average of 2.6 years (grade equivalent) growth in Accelerated Math during the year of single-gender classes. The average daily attendance was consistent with previous attendance patterns and exceeded the distr.

Book Single Gender Language Arts Classes and the Impact on Achievement of Males

Download or read book Single Gender Language Arts Classes and the Impact on Achievement of Males written by Brock English and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this causal comparative research design was to analyze the relationship between Language Arts scale scores of elementary male students on the Mississippi Curriculum Test, Version 2 (MCT2) and the type of classroom, mixed-gender or single-gender. The study also analyzed the percentage of questions answered correctly on the MCT2 in the English Language Arts sub-categories of vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing, and grammar. Archival data of 222 students was used, 100 male students in single-gender classes and 122 students in mixed-gender classes. The study was conducted in an urban elementary public school with a diverse population in northeast Mississippi. The study did not reveal any significant differences in the overall achievement of third and fourth grade males in single-gender classes compared to mixed-gender classes; however, significant differences were found in fifth grade overall scale scores in the single-gender classes. Furthermore, the study did not reveal any significant differences in the percentages of questions answered correctly in vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing, and grammar of third and fourth grade males in single-gender classes. However, significant differences were found in the overall percent correct for fifth grade reading comprehension and writing. Results indicate there is no advantage in terms of achievement in English Language Arts for third and fourth grade males in single-gender classes, but there is a moderate effect of single-gender education on fifth grade scale scores, reading comprehension, and writing. Suggestions for further research are also included.

Book Effects of Single Gender Education on the Reading Achievement of Third Through Fifth Grade Boys

Download or read book Effects of Single Gender Education on the Reading Achievement of Third Through Fifth Grade Boys written by Michael Brown and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is said repeatedly, boys can't read. However, the statement should be boys can read they just don't. Understanding there is a need for action is the first step educators must take in helping boys emerge as confident and successful readers. Single-gender classrooms can be successful tools when seeking new ways in which to engage boys in reading. This is a step towards creating atmospheres where boys are encouraged to read and where reading is tailored to their interests. The purpose of this causal comparative study was to examine the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) reading achievement scores of third through fifth grade males placed in both single-gendered and co-educational classrooms. A one-way repeated measures ANOVA was performed and it was observed that there was a statistically significant difference between the scores of third through fifth grade students taught in single-gendered classrooms compared to those taught in co-educational classrooms. Although it was observed that students in single-gendered classrooms generally performed more consistently at or above grade level in each grade but third on the fall 2011 and spring 2012 tests, there appeared to be no significant difference in the at or above grade level percentages of either the control or experimental groups.

Book Debating Single sex Education

Download or read book Debating Single sex Education written by Frances R. Spielhagen and published by R & L Education. This book was released on 2008 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educators agree that boys and girls learn differently, but do they learn better in single-sex classes? Single-sex education has become a 'hot topic' among educators striving to address achievement declines, especially in the middle school years. Since the United States Department of Education confirmed the legality of single-sex classes in public schools in 2006, the number of single-sex classes and schools has increased dramatically and the options continue to grow in popularity. Debating Single-Sex Education offers a timely and detailed summary of the issues surrounding single-sex education. Eight veteran educators provide research-based findings on single-sex classes in the United States and Africa. This book presents a brief historical summary of single-sex classes in the United States. Other features include recent qualitative case studies, interviews with students, and statistical evidence of the effects of single-sex classes on student achievement. The final chapter synthesizes the common findings among these studies and the implications for practice in schools.
