Book The Impact of Neglected Tropical Diseases NTDs on Health and Wellbeing in Sub Saharan Africa SSA

Download or read book The Impact of Neglected Tropical Diseases NTDs on Health and Wellbeing in Sub Saharan Africa SSA written by Elizabeth Ochola and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) remain endemic to many regions of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) left behind by socioeconomic progress. As such, these diseases are a proxy for extreme poverty and inequitable access in the political, economic, social, and cultural systems which hinder the attainment of health and wellbeing. NTDs affect marginalized populations who are unable to lobby for their rights and thus have no 'political voice' to influence NTD control interventions. As countries embrace and work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the needs of such vulnerable populations need to be addressed in the local and global arenas. Health is a universal right and is central to happiness, economic progress, and wellbeing. As such, it is important to measure the wellbeing of populations living in some of the poorest and most uneven settings and in so doing identify potential indicators for use in a Global Index of Wellbeing (GLOWING) that will capture the inequities represented by NTDs. The research uses primary qualitative data collected from five NTD endemic counties of Kenya. The study interviews key informants (n=21) and focus groups (n=5) consisting of 7-8 people, involved in studying NTDs or infected / affected by NTDs, respectively. Informed by the capability and the political ecology of health theories, the following objectives were addressed: 1) to identify the political, economic, social, and cultural impacts of NTDs on health and wellbeing; 2) to investigate the capacity of local communities to address the burden of NTDs; 3) to identify potential indicators for use in a Global Index of Wellbeing (GLOWING), that will capture the inequities represented by NTDs. The main findings of this research indicate that first, broad structural factors such as devolution of government services, competing interests, political climate; economic opportunity and productivity; marginalization, illiteracy, gender, cultural norms and practices; psychological and behavioral practices; environmental activities, water, sanitation and housing status determine NTD transmission and subsequently the health and wellbeing of populations. Second, even though there are numerous ongoing control strategies for NTDs in the country guided by the World Health Organization (WHO), early physical examinations, proper diagnosis, universal health care, counseling services, and support groups for persons suffering debilitating NTDs are severely lacking. Third, the research reveals that persons living in NTD endemic areas are poverty-stricken, dependent, and reside in areas that have poor health infrastructure. As a result, their wellbeing or ability to live a good life is dependent on access to basic needs, and good spiritual and psychosocial health. This thesis makes important contributions to knowledge, policy, and practice. Theoretically, the research extends social theory (structure and agency) in the largely biomedical field of NTDs to demonstrate that inequities are embedded within the broad political, socio-cultural, and economic systems which enhance NTD infection. Through the capability approach, the research acknowledges the role of human agency in providing context specific solutions to NTDs. Methodologically, the research contributes to the conceptualization and measurement of wellbeing in populations affected by NTDs in Low-Middle Income Countries (LMICs). Moreover, the research uses qualitative rather than quantitative methods (prevalence levels) to highlight the lived in experiences of persons infected and affected by NTDs. In terms of policy and practice, first, the research recognizes the challenges that exist within the broader political, socio-cultural and economic systems and suggests an equity lens in the distribution of basic resources such as water, sanitation and housing. Second, the research proposes poverty alleviation as a means of tackling NTDs for sustained economic opportunity and productivity at the local and national level. Third, the research finds that NTD stakeholders need to engage the communities in/affected by NTDs in order to tackle issues of marginalization and discrimination as well as initiate community-driven interventions for NTD control for enhanced health and wellbeing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forgotten People, Forgotten Diseases Second Edition The neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are the most common infections of the world's poor, but few people know about these diseases and why they are so important. This second edition of Forgotten People, Forgotten Diseases provides an overview of the NTDs and how they devastate the poor, essentially trapping them in a vicious cycle of extreme poverty by preventing them from working or attaining their full intellectual and cognitive development. Author Peter J. Hotez highlights a new opportunity to control and perhaps eliminate these ancient scourges, through alliances between nongovernmental development organizations and private-public partnerships to create a successful environment for mass drug administration and product development activities. Forgotten People, Forgotten Diseases also Addresses the myriad changes that have occurred in the field since the previous edition. Describes how NTDs have affected impoverished populations for centuries, changing world history. Considers the future impact of alliances between nongovernmental development organizations and private-public partnerships. Forgotten People, Forgotten Diseases is an essential resource for anyone seeking a roadmap to coordinate global advocacy and mobilization of resources to combat NTDs.

Book excerpt: "Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) blight the lives of a billion people worldwide and threaten the health of millions more. These ancient companions of poverty weaken impoverished populations, frustrate the achievement of health in the Millennium Development Goals and impede global health and economies has convinced governments, donors, the pharmaceutical industry and other agencies, including nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), to invest in preventing and controlling this diverse group of diseases. Global efforts to control "hidden" diseases, such as dracunculiasis (guinea-worm disease), leprosy, gains including the imminent eradication of dracunculiasis. Since 1989 (when most endemic countries began reporting monthly from each endemic village), the number of new dracunculiasis cases has fallen from 892 055 in 12 endemic countries to 3190 in 4 countries in 2009, a decrease of more than 99%. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends five public-health strategies for the prevention and control of NTDs: preventive chemotherapy; intensified case-management; vector control; the provision of safe water, sanitation and hygiene; and veterinary public health (that is, applying veterinary sciences to ensure the health and well-being of humans). Although one approach and delivered locally." - p. vii

Book One Health and Neglected Tropical Diseases

Download or read book One Health and Neglected Tropical Diseases written by Claire J Standley and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “One Health” is defined as an approach to achieve better health outcomes for humans, animals, and the environment through collaborative and interdisciplinary efforts. The One Health framework is increasingly being applied to the management, control, and even elimination of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), a set of infectious diseases that, collectively, affect more than one billion people across almost 150 countries. NTDs are some of the most common infections in the world; they cause substantial morbidity and mortality, particularly in regions with little access to medical care and other resources. Although there is increasing recognition of the major public health threat presented by NTDs, the ecological complexities of their transmission continue to pose challenges for their control and elimination. Some NTDs are zoonotic, meaning that they can be transmitted between humans and animals and, as such, present obstacles for public health and veterinary services in addition to concerns for wildlife conservation. Vector-borne NTDs necessitate measures that integrate consideration of the environment into public health strategies in order to sustainably reduce disease transmission. This book presents a collection of papers that explore various aspects of how the One Health concept is being applied to NTD control around the world, from genomics and diagnostic tools to improved surveillance and disease management. Encompassing research from Central America, the Caribbean, Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa, the collection emphasizes the diversity of NTDs as well as the critical importance of multisectoral collaboration for their control and elimination.

Book Poverty and Neglected Tropical Diseases in the American Rural South

Download or read book Poverty and Neglected Tropical Diseases in the American Rural South written by Christine Crudo Blackburn and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Poverty and Neglected Tropical Diseases in the American Rural South, Christine Crudo Blackburn and Macey T. Lively study regions of the United States rarely acknowledged by the average American. These are regions of extreme poverty in the rural American South where a mixture of historical discrimination, structural discrimination, lack of opportunities, and decaying infrastructure conspire to create an environment conducive to chronic, debilitating diseases known as Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). Blackburn and Lively explore the conditions that allow NTDs to thrive in a wealthy nation like the United States when such diseases are typically associated with the poorest communities in Africa, Asia, and South America. Poverty and Neglected Tropical Diseases pulls back the curtain on the reality of poverty and disease in America and tell the story of failing sanitation infrastructure, the lack of clean water, the inability to access healthcare, and the lack of financial security through the eyes of those living it every day.

This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of bacterial and parasitic diseases commonly found in various nations in Africa, Asia and Latin America. NTDs are caused by different kinds of pathogens and transmitted by vectors such as mosquitoes and black flies. Some of the common NTDs are schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, lymphatic filariasis, mycetoma, onchocerciasis, trachoma, etc. There are several factors such as the lack of accessibility to clean water and hygienic sanitary conditions that contribute to the spread of NTDs. These diseases mainly affect the poor and are a source of tremendous suffering because of their disfiguring, debilitating, and sometimes deadly impact. NTDs also impair physical and cognitive development. This book investigates the neglected tropical diseases and their impact on global health in detail. Its aim is to present researches that have transformed the study of these diseases. The book will provide comprehensive knowledge to the readers.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), an important focus of U.S. global health assistance, may come under scrutiny as the 112th Congress debates spending levels for ongoing global health programs. Estimates indicate that some 2 billion people are at risk of contracting an NTD, of whom more than 1 billion people are afflicted with one or more. This book examines the background, responses and issues for Congress relating to Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), while identifying research gaps and opportunities.

Book Neglected Tropical Diseases East Asia

Download or read book Neglected Tropical Diseases East Asia written by Jürg Utzinger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of diseases frequently found in impoverished communities in tropical and sub-tropical countries. The risk for many of the NTDs is high in both deprived urban and rural areas of East Asia. Adapted to the endemic settings and characteristics of the diseases, a range of tools and strategies are currently being rolled out for the large-scale control of many NTDs. Both vector control measures and community sensitization programmes have for example been used to control dengue in urbanized settings. Challenges posed by yaws and lymphatic filariasis are being addressed by mass drug administration, while rabies requires the involvement of the veterinary public health sector for disease control. For leprosy, an elimination target has been defined; however, achieving this goal remains a considerable challenge. Food-borne trematodiases, on the other hand, are emerging and require a deeper understanding of its burden in East Asia and how these diseases can be tackled in a cost-effective manner. Finally, factors, such as an increase of non-communicable diseases due to changing lifestyles which accompany economic growth, the spreading HIV epidemic as well as climate change and the occurrence of natural disasters can potentially affect the epidemiology and control of NTDs. This volume discusses the mentioned topics in detail with contributions by experts in the respective research areas from different working environments.
