Book excerpt: Seventeen students in one section of high school biology were the focus of a study on the effect of cooperative-learning strategies on student understanding and long-term memory, student and teacher attitudes and engagement. Through the use of cooperative-learning strategies students are tasked with working collaboratively towards a shared goal. Each lesson utilizes peer to peer learning and self-discovery. One nontreatment unit was taught using traditional, teacher-centered lessons and compared to two treatment units which were taught using cooperative-learning strategies. While data collected for all students' understanding yielded mixed results, data showed definitive improvements in student understanding for the high-achieving students. Results also showed improvement in long-term memory, and a modest increase in attitudes, and engagement for all students and teacher's attitude. Using cooperative-learning strategies in my classroom presented an initial challenge to both me and the students, but after the first treatment unit was completed familiarity with the strategies allowed for a higher level of engagement and understanding. Because of this, I am excited about continueing the use of cooperative-learning strategies into my teaching in the future.

Book excerpt: This paper explored the implementation of cooperative learning to twelve English language learners in a Science unit on weather and climate for six weeks. The study investigated what happened when English Language Learners (ELL) were assigned specific roles, when they engaged with one another, the ways ELL took responsibility for the learning of other students and how cooperative learning affected student motivation. A variety of methods was used to gather data. An initial assessment was given to assess prior knowledge of the Science content, anecdotal records were taken during the cooperative learning sessions, self-assessments were given to students at the end of each session and another assessment was given at the end of the unit to measure for growth. Results showed that cooperative learning made a positive impact in each of the areas explored.

The pre-activities allowed students to gain some prior knowledge that would not only enhance cognitive development, but increase self-confidence and motivation to become more engaged in the learning environment. The additional cooperative learning structures improved cognitive development, as well as, social development in the classroom. In addition, teacher motivation and improved pedagogy also impacted the learning environment in a positive manner.

Book excerpt: The study examined gender as a factor in the achievement of biology students taught using Students' Team Achievement Division (STAD) and Jigsaw cooperative learning strategies in Wamba Local Government Area of Nasarawa state Nigeria. The research adopted the non randomized, pretest - posttest control group quasi experimental design. A sample of 188 students comprising of 95 boys and 93 girls from 6 randomly selected schools was used. A 30 item instrument called Biology Achievement Test (BAT) developed by the researchers was used for data collection. Its reliability coefficient of 0.84 was obtained using Kuder-Richardson formula 21 was used for data collection. The schools were grouped into 3 and assigned randomly into 1 control and 2 experimental groups. The control was taught using Lecture method while cooperative learning was used in experimental groups. Intact classes were used in all the schools, students were pre tested, treated for 6 weeks and post tested. Data collected were analyzed using Mean, Standard deviation and ANCOVA at 0.05 level of significance. The result shows that the difference in the mean achievements of boys and girls in the 2 methods was insignificant. Teachers therefore should use the methods in teaching and seminar, workshops and conferences should be organized to train the teachers.
