Book The Northeastern Forest inventory Data processing System

Download or read book The Northeastern Forest inventory Data processing System written by Robert W. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S3One of the major projects of the U.S. Forest Service is a nationwide forest survey, which is designed to obtain useful and timely information about the timber resources of the United States. In the course of the surveys, which are made mainly on a state-by-state basis, great masses of detailed data are collected about timber volumes, growth, timber cut, and other characteristics of the timber resource. In recent years the volume of information obtained from forest-survey field plots has increased greatly. The task of compiling and analyzing this mass of data with mechanical computing machines was both cumbersome and time-consuming. A solution to this problem was seen in the development of the high-speed electronic computers. The Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, which was responsible for conducting the forest survey of the heavily forested Northeastern States, investigated the possibilities and devised the Northeastern Forest-Inventory Data-Processing System. The purpose of this paperand the nine companion papers that will followis to describe the system and its operation for the benefit of others who have similar problems in data processing.S3.

The output of these sample summaries, in turn, is designed for use with program OUTPUT (see part VIII of this series) to produce equivalent tables of statistics for the sampled populations.S3.

Book The Northeastern Forest inventory Data processing System

Download or read book The Northeastern Forest inventory Data processing System written by Robert C. Peters and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2A solution to this problem was seen in the development of the high-speed electronic computers. The Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, which was responsible for conducting the forest survey of the heavily forested Northeastern States, investigated the possibilities and devised the Northeastern Forest-Inventory Data Processing System. This paper tells about the operation of a part of the system. Program OUTPUT is designed for use in conjunction with program (TABLE (see part V of this series). Its sole function is to produce and print fully labeled tables of statistics for sampled populations from tabular summaries produced in program TABLE. Detailed instructions for solving estimation problems with the standard version of the program are given in the following chapters.S3.

Book The Forest Inventory and Analysis Database

Download or read book The Forest Inventory and Analysis Database written by Sharon W. Woudenberg and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-10-19 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is based on previous documentation of the nationally standardized Forest Inventory and Analysis database (Hansen and others 1992; Woudenberg and Farrenkopf 1995; Miles and others 2001). Documentation of the structure of the Forest Inventory and Analysis database (FIADB) for Phase 2 data, as well as codes and definitions, is provided. Examples for producing population level estimates are also presented. This database provides a consistent framework for storing forest inventory data across all ownerships for the entire United States. Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) is a continuing endeavor mandated by Congress in the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act of 1974 and the McSweeney-McNary Forest Research Act of 1928. FIA's primary objective is to determine the extent, condition, volume, growth, and depletion of timber on the Nation's forest land. Before 1999, all inventories were conducted on a periodic basis. The passage of the 1998 Farm Bill requires FIA to collect data annually on plots within each State. This kind of up-to-date information is essential to frame realistic forest policies and programs. USDA Forest Service regional research stations are responsible for conducting these inventories and publishing summary reports for individual States. In addition to published reports, the Forest Service provides data collected in each inventory to those interested in further analysis. This report describes a standard format in which data can be obtained. This standard format, referred to as the Forest Inventory and Analysis Database (FIADB) structure, was developed to provide users with as much data as possible in a consistent manner among States. A number of inventories conducted prior to the implementation of the annual inventory are available in the FIADB. However, various data attributes may be empty or the items may have been collected or computed differently. Annual inventories use a common plot design and common data collection procedures nationwide, resulting in greater consistency among FIA work units than earlier inventories. Data field definitions note inconsistencies caused by different sampling designs and processing methods.
