Book Neuroendocrinology in Physiology and Medicine

Download or read book Neuroendocrinology in Physiology and Medicine written by P. Michael Conn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-10-06 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A panel of leading experts integrate the latest findings from basic and clinical science to create a comprehensive treatment of the processes by which the brain acts as an endocrine organ, not only to control hormonal functions, but also to maintain homeostasis and regulate behavior. The authors-recognized both as leaders in their fields and as skilled teachers-provide systematic coverage of the analytical, anatomical, functional, clinical, and pathological aspects of neuroendocrinology. Topics range from the interactions between the nervous and endocrine systems to the regulation of reproduction, development, metabolism, fluid balance, and biological rhythms. Neuroendocrinology in Physiology and Medicine offers an unprecedented marriage of clinical and basic knowledge that has been missing from classical neuroscience, endocrinology, and physiology texts. It will teach today's medical students and serve researchers as a valuable reference to this rapidly growing field.

Book Association and Auditory Cortices

Download or read book Association and Auditory Cortices written by Alan Peters and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with some of the association areas of the cerebral cortex and with the auditory cortex. In the first chapter, by Deepak Pandya and Edward Yeterian, the general architectural features and connections of cortical associ ation areas are considered; as these authors point out, in primates the association areas take up a considerable portion of the total cortical surface. Indeed, it is the development of the association areas that accounts for the greatest differ ences between the brains of primate and non primate species, and these areas have long been viewed as crucial in the formation of higher cognitive and be havioral functions. In the following chapter, Irving Diamond, David Fitzpatrick, and James Sprague consider the question of whether the functions of the as sociation areas depend on projections from the sensory areas of the cortex. They use the visual cortex to examine this question and show that there is a great deal of difference between species in the amount of dependence, the differences being paralleled by variations in the manner in which the geniculate and pulvinar nuclei of the thalamus project to the striate and extra striate cortical areas. One of the more interesting and perhaps least understood of the association areas is the cingulate cortex, discussed by Brent Vogt. Cingulate cortex has been linked with emotion and with affective responses to pain, and in his chapter Vogt gives an account of its cytoarchitecture, connections, and functions.

Book Atlas of the Human Hypothalamus

Download or read book Atlas of the Human Hypothalamus written by Bertalan Dudas and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-02-04 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlas of the Human Hypothalamus presents for the first time a detailed view of the cyto- and myeloarchitecture of the human hypothalamus. Providing high-resolution images of consecutive coronal sections, this book illustrates the brain area that is responsible for maintaining the homeostasis of the body by direct neuronal projections as well as by linking the central nervous system to the endocrine system. The primary goal of this atlas is to provide detailed morphological understanding of the hypothalamic structures that control numerous vital functions as well as to provide a tool to target hypothalamic areas during deep brain stimulation. Presents the first-ever detailed atlas on the human hypothalamus by using consecutive coronal sections Features high-resolution micrographs of hypothalamic sections to demonstrate cyto- and myeloarchitectonics Defines nuclei and pathways by using standard nomenclature Provides precise location of hypothalamic structures for guided stereotaxy Attempts to describe specific relationships between hypothalamic structures

Book A Time for Metabolism and Hormones

Download or read book A Time for Metabolism and Hormones written by Paolo Sassone-Corsi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-04 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen spectacular advances in the field of circadian biology. These have attracted the interest of researchers in many fields, including endocrinology, neurosciences, cancer, and behavior. By integrating a circadian view within the fields of endocrinology and metabolism, researchers will be able to reveal many, yet-unsuspected aspects of how organisms cope with changes in the environment and subsequent control of homeostasis. This field is opening new avenues in our understanding of metabolism and endocrinology. A panel of the most distinguished investigators in the field gathered together to discuss the present state and the future of the field. The editors trust that this volume will be of use to those colleagues who will be picking up the challenge to unravel how the circadian clock can be targeted for the future development of specific pharmacological strategies toward a number of pathologies.

Book The Chick Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates and Alternate Stains

Download or read book The Chick Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates and Alternate Stains written by Luis Puelles and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas – and its accompanying text - is the most comprehensive work on avian neuroanatomy available so far. It identifies more than 900 hundred structures (versus ca. 250 in previous avian atlases), 180 of them for the first time. It correlates avian and mammalian neuroanatomy on the basis of homologies and applies mammalian terms to homologous avian structures. This is the first atlas that represents the fundamental histogenetic domains of the vertebrate neuroaxis on the basis of sound fate-mapping and gene expression data. This results in a substantial increase in accuracy of delineations. Developmental molecular biologists will find it easier to extrapolate early neural tube patterns into mature structures. The modern trend to shift avian neuroanatomical nomenclature toward mammalian terminology by reference to postulated homologies has been expanded to the entire brain, but is not yet complete. This creates a new standard for comparative cross-reference, which can also be applied to reptilian-mammalian comparisons. Color photographs and matching diagrams of 65 coronal, 23 sagittal and 9 horizontal 140 micron-thick sections reacted histochemically for acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Thoroughly revised drawings. Updated view of the pallium, including the new concept of homology between the lateral pallium and the mammalian claustro-insular complex. Extensive introductory text and bibliography, presenting the background information, methodology and justification of delineations. For the first time in any species, this atlas depicts the fate-mapped natural embryonic boundaries in the postnatal brain. For the first time, we present color images of all the 6 histological stains (AChE, Nissl, TH, calbindin, calretinin and parvalbumin) on which delineations are based (accompanying Expert Consult eBook). Includes the Expert Consult eBook version, compatible with PC, Mac, and most mobile devices and eReaders, which allows readers to browse, search, and interact with content. The eBook also contains annotatable AI files of diagrams for use by researchers.
